I just bought L4D 1 for 8 bucks and will be playing the hell out of it and wait for the Xmas price drop for L4D 2.

So, now that the game has been out for almost a month, what is the general view on it? I'm personally loving it - melee weapons make a huge difference, especially since wide-open areas are more abundant. In L4D1, getting surrounded was almost certainly a death sentence, as even the auto-shotty couldn't take all of them down quickly enough. With some of the new weapons (Katana, Chainsaw) it's easy enough to whip around and take them down without breaking a sweat.

Oh, and I love what they did with the new campaigns. I'm especially grateful for the new Crescendo events, which force you to take action rather than sit in a corner for a few minutes sniping zombies. The gauntlet ones are just amazing, although some of them can cause you to tear your hair out in frustration (People who have played Dark Carnival 4 - The Barns know what I'm talking about).

My one complaint about the game is that Rochelle really didn't get much character development, and she just doesn't have many decent lines. I'm still cringing over "Axe me a question, I dare you." Coach and Ellis have a lot of fun throughout the entirety of Dark Carnival, and even Nick has his moments of hilarity during Swamp Fever with "Brains come out. Swamp water doesn't. ...Don't ask me how I know that." Rochelle just seems to be tacked on as a token black girl in the South.

I'm not that impressed so far, which makes me sad.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

I love Realism mode. That's about it.

I find I use the pistols more than anything because of how reliably you can put out those simple headshots. Outside of realism, the semi-auto rifle with scope is supreme because it one-shots about anything no matter where you hit them, but in realism mode... oh no, you still gotta shoot 'em in the head... and if you get surrounded with that rifle, you're boned unless there's a machete on your back.

All in all, Realism mode is what makes the game for me. None of this outlining or alerts... and when you're surrounded you have no idea where your friends are. It makes you play a lot more carefully, and yet with the plethora of new zombies that excel at splitting up or disrupting the party, it's a challenge to do so.

The carnival level is mostly dumb, but the 'Barns' level Locclo mentioned is a tough one at the end, on realism mode or not.

I haven't played Realism mode yet, only Versus. What is it exactly?

I was also pretty sure we got it uncensored, but apparently the neckbeard behind the counter at the internet cafe was wrong. No matter, as that same net cafe has it uncensored and it's tons of fun.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Realism mode... zombies take 2 to 3 times as many body shots, so you really need to go for the head ALL of the time. The AK is really worth it.

There is no glowing outline around your teammates to tell you where they are, nor is there an outline or description box on items in the world. If you can't see 'em, you can't see 'em.

You don't get alerts when someone is dragged off by a smoker, or something else grapples you - they've got to tell you.

Do you still get the audio cue (survivor yells something) when they're pinned/being dragged/pummelled/etc?

Yeah, but that can be hard to hear over a swarm, and you don't know where they are even if you hear them yell.
