My thought behind our rules was that by it being complete open to all elite choices and HQ everyone can bring pretty equally gross stuff to the table. With the preselected elite choices so of the players felt like they got the short end of the stick on options.

Here a breakdown of how I was planning to balance a bit:

Open Selection - Every army has some pretty gross combos, the point cost and how the game plays out will balance things a bit (hopefully)
Heavy Terrain - Nerfs the shooting options a bit so a long range shooting unit can't sit back and pick everyone off.
Deployment - Massive Scatter and 3" consolidation nerfs melee a bit to randomize placement. It also gives players a chance to get into cover or away from other players. The standard deployment felt like it gave to little room from each other to start and the person(s) in the center made too much of a target.

The point cap we were going to bump up to 400pts to accommodate our demon player a bit. Yes that means some gross combos but they will be met with jsut as gross combos.


The match should be taking place next weekend so I'll try to make up a batrep so you can see how it goes.

I wonder about some armies though.... IG for example. They'd likely have a tough time competing with units like a GK Grandmaster and retinue, Crisis suits, etc. The best (and coincidentally most expensive) I can come up with is this;

CCS - medic, 3 plasmaguns + plasma pistol, PF, carapace, cameleoline, 2 bodyguards, astropath, master of ordinance, master of the fleet 315

3.5 plasma guns, 4 ablative 4+/FNP wounds with +1 cover save, and the hilarious master of ordinance. Camp out in cover, use "fire on my target" on themselves to go pew pew on other campers/incoming assaulters. 3+ cover and FNP, even with T3 makes for a relatively tough unit, but you flick them in the ear in assault and it's good night. Better just pray for a hit and snake eyes on the master of the ordinance!

Anyway, great idea for a battle! I love this kind of outside the box thinking.

How about losing crowd pleaser points for having more numerous units...force tyranids to go carnifex, imperial to lose outright, necrons to equip rather then increase number of swarms...!

Well, you guys are starting to talk about things outside what "works" for a boss battle. You can't really let it be "any 350 points you want" - its called a BOSS battle. Your biggest, baddest HQ - not a necron lord and a swarm of scarabs, or a tyranid warrior and a swarm of hormogaunts....

Imperials lose outright, that's silly. If anyone knew going into it that is the philosophy a lot of people would drop out. It's not like every local tourney has a mile long waiting list either.

they are the funnest games... i had a 3 way game in a tournament i went to last month and i was a samll mechanised force vs a full foot slogging space wolves with 2 wolf lords and a long ranged black templars... i ended up winning b/c i challenged the wolflords to try to get to the furtherest table edge and i got the black templar dude on my team... then backsatbbing him in the 5th turn and honing onto the objective... very fun

With nine players to a table, you don't need a mile-long line out the door. Just nine players.

As for IG...they don't auto-lose. I recall the first one I went to having an IG player who got the middle of the table, and he had several units of grenadiers and lascannons in there, and he just set up a firebase. I'm not exactly sure what he had...but G; if you're going to run this, I'm sure you know IG well enough to give them something competitive and capable of winning, I don't know why you think there's justification to gripe over something where you make the rules on the spot.

In this type of match NOTHING is auto lose because in FFA the game is unpredictable. With the rules we setup you could take a Command squad and attach an elite IG choice, you could honestly win in shear volume of numbers.

Due to schedule conflicts our version of this is pushed back to Fri the 18th. The smack talk on the other hand has already started.

I'm just thinking a IG HQ with Straken and an attached Priest and Commissar would go a long way to being more competitive...

Not sure though, there are probably ridiculous specials out there who would roflstomp too much to be fun.

Yeah there is some seriously broken SC combos out there that can be brought forth, but we'll see how it rolls during our match. The problem with comming up with solid rules for this kind of match is trying to please all armies without making anyone feel nerfed by the rules.

for instance skull taker ie kill anything on 4+ or even good ol lysander, 4 wounds strength 10 thunder hammer cant be instant killed, he pretty much kills every character.

Skulltaker would get his head stomped in by say a unit of Pariahs or anything firing ap3 or higher. Iysander would get smoked by some PW combos since eating up 200pts would take a chunk out of his possible retinue.

With the ability to have everything equally as gross it balances out in a twisted sorta way. Some combos though I could see an issue with like Plaguefather. 4+ you gain another nurgle on unlimited turns could be a significant issue.

I think IG could be done well without going all shooty.

Priest (Shotgun, Eviscerator) and 7 Ogryn anyone?

If looking for a hardcore character killers all it takes is Implant Genestealers with hooks and a broodlord, thats alot of high intiative multiwound killing monsters, suddenly that lysander only needs 2 wounds to bite it

We personally chose Elites only because elites are typically high cost and lower in number.

I would have liked to play some kind of biker squad. Seemed too restrictive to me.

need to be carefull letting the ork player take old Z. he can remove the independent models from the board with just having to beat the other player in a D6 roll

If I were to do something like this, I would definitely leave SCs out of it. They really can make it difficult. Although, I wouldn't mind using Mephiston in a FFA environment...

This sounds like FUN. I might have to pitch it to my local 40k crew and see if they'd be up for something like this some time!

If you read the rules on page one, that's one of the requirements.

I may take these rules down to my FLGS, and try and get an event going. Just made a list for chaos

Is it no wonder why any players chose guard? even with Ogryns they wouldn't survive well!!

This Christmas there is a 500 point multi-army all out war on four table for 9 hours at my FLGS. Would it be possible to have an Elite Squad bashup battle? Or should be more balanced at that number of points?
