Man, below 33.5? That's rough. I'm a really fit guy and a 34 can be a little on the tight side; depending on brand.

This "law" came out last year to fight health costs. Fire the fat guy for being fat, he becomes poor and the only food he can afford is the 100 yen menu at McDonald's. Of course, almost everyone drinks with alcohol available almost everywhere, even in vending machines and on the summit of Mt.Fuji, as are cigarettes. Lot of empty calories in beer.

The government, well now ex-government, couldn't take on the zaibatsu beverage makers (asahi, suntory, kirin) or Japan Tabacco as most of their constituents are the farmers that "feed the beast" and many of the politicians are directors for these companies or have heavy interdependent side businesses with them. No one takes this law seriously except for employers who can use it to fire the odd fatass, and apparently Yabe san and her 5 week cabbage soup crash diet, which will probably do worse things to her health than the 2 lbs or whatever she put on. Besides, in the new economy here there are no more "full-time employees". You're either part-time, working full-time hours (I get to live this existence) or a contractor hired to work full-time hours.

Am I mistaken, or does that little number on pants... indicate the actual size of them? Why are pants allowed to be so vague in their specs?

This is now very confusing to me, and to think that my Irish Grandfather was a tailor...

How does the sizing work on clothes? Does a medium shirt really have anything to do with being medium? My brain is melting... omg. I mean seriously, a 2x4 piece of lumber is actually in the region of 3 1/2 inches, and I can understand this somewhat... but what is with clothes? Are there literally no standards?

The new economy? Is this something to do with the businesses, or the government? I don't understand what the purpose of having multiple part time workers would be for most businesses. It doesn't really make sense.

So you are actually a full time worker, just that you get called a part time worker, because they are running low on funds? I don't get it...

You would have thought it would have been based on BMI at least, to accomodate taller and shorter people.

Though given how BMI is not really a great indicator as to how good a condition your body is in, they could also have used fat index, or any number of other methods which give a better indication as to how generally healthy you are without having to undergo extensive medical examination, rather than just the size of your waist.

To be perfectly honest, it doesn't sound like all that much thought has been put into this decision...

True. Reading Khornholio's post, it appears this is more of a token gesture with no particularly realistic expectation of result.

And you better beef up Cinderella... . What the hell is that image? Facepalm fail?

There is at least a dozen reasons to not make tiny facepalm fails, and that is definitely one of them...

I suggest that everyone read this brief wiki article if they are not familiar with any of this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_fat_percentage

Spend 1/2 hour looking at different types of people, and try and tell me that you actually know how healthy they are. Next, watch this NOVA episode, because it is very interesting.

http://www.hulu.com/watch/63726/nova-marathon-challenge?c=News-and-Information#s-p2-so-i0

This is about normal, every day people trying to participate in the Boston Marathon. All shapes and sizes... that is why I find this pseudo-scientific notion of health, based on general appearances, absolutely ridiculous.

@Wrex - sorry to lazy to quote.

Post war Japan companies were heavy into bonuses and perks for their employees. So much so that July and December are universally known as "Bonus time" by everyone in society. As the Japanese economy went into the dumper years ago, well into the dumper for them...companies restructured to cut costs. By having 3 part time workers who will willingly work 40 hours a week and do the exact same amount of work as 3 full-time employees would and not having to pay them bonuses, or subsidize their travel to and from work, or put them in a corporate pension plan, the employer is cutting costs. So legally, even though you are working a full-time job, you are on the books as "part-time". The government had a hand in this when the economy crapped out and came up with this brilliant idea of shafting the little guy. Most of the bosses now in Japan, whether corporate or political, are just the descendants of the Samurai elite in suits. The regular Kentaro on the street in a suit is a descendant of the peasant pee-on class living his entire life for what he hopes is a benevolent master.

After scrolling up and down about a dozen times I have learnt not to be so lazy.

I remember seeing the video of you boxing, and you looked like you should join the football team TBH.

I have never been a small guy either, but you got a few pounds that could be dropped most likely; along with pretty much every single person in this thread.

Sure as hell don't sense any Olympic athletes on Dakka these days...

I have a really thick/big frame, I am not sure if I could have a 38 inch waist if I starved to death, much less a smaller one. I remember one girlfriend commented on how "dainty" my wrists are, I told her that 8 inch wrists are NOT dainty.

Wrexasaur, depends on which sports you are excluding from the Olympics to make that comment.

I can't get over the fact that girl on the left thinks she is sexy enough to wear a belly shirt when her spare tire hangs down to her waist.

Ugh.

--The whole concept of government granted and government regulated 'permits' and the accompanying government mandate for government approved firearms 'training' prior to being blessed by government with the privilege to carry arms in a government approved and regulated manner, flies directly in the face of the fundamental right to keep and bear arms.

Considering they are dragging them out of the house, they may have made her get dressed in a hurry. Besides, this is the internet, you never know when a picture has be 'shopped or not.
