They have a very narrow niche and end up like fire dragons.

Short Range, crappy armor, not exactly combat units, nor 'great' shooy unit.
Their only strength is the speed they achieve and the safety moving through terrain.

Their only offensive role would be cleaning up already mauled MEQ squads that are not in cover. If that happens alot, take them, if it doesn't, IMO move onto something else....even kroot would be better IMO.

I agree, they are very fragile. Also, they have conflicting stats and special rules. They get fleet, but then dont have the melee attacks to back it up. Sure you can get them into range easy, but you really need to shoot then assault with them or they will die next round. If the squad was bigger or had larger range then maybe, even if they had better combat stats I would say yes.

If you are going to use them. Keep them in reserve when your opponent is close to your side get them get them in 6 inche or less from a unit of any MEQ. Get some pathfinders to mark for them bumping them all up to bs 5 and maybe taking a cover save away form them. Fire away then charge them. You will probably kill a full squad of marines, but it will take a lot of points to do it and you have to get lucky and get them in close to assault.

The models are obscenely expensive, its a mediocre unit and they remind me of geoff goldblum. There are so many cooler units in the tau arsenal.
