Swooping hawks are decent taken in small units for the yo yo drop a template strategy maybe go after vehicles but they do not score and cost a decent amount of points so may not be worth it at lower points levels where points are tight. Swooping Hawks have really nice models. Winged elves are cool.

I just took a minimum squad (SHx4+Exarch w/ Skyleap and a Hawk's Talon=147) in an 1,850 army last night that I made to with my 2 primary opponents in mind, Tyranids and Space Wolves. Played the Nids in Pitched Annihilation last night and they came on turn 2 and consistantly there after, bombing his gaunt screen for 3 turns, killing an averge of 5 every turn. The botton of turn 5 they bombed some outflanking Genestealers, killing 2, then the game ended. As it was a screen, the most gaunts I could get under the large blast were 5, but having Eldrad and another Farseer provided the oppertunity for 3 Dooms a turn. The gaunts were to be Doomed anyway so the Dire Avengers could wipe the screen before the Scatter Walkers and Fire Dragons could fire on his Warriors and Tyrant respectively, but lowering their numbers every turn as they did meant the DAs didn't have to Bladestorm to kill the gaunts. This allowed them to do a Guided Bladestorm on a Doomed Dakkafex the following turn, rolling a monumental 14 wounds of which he failed to save 6 (only had the 3+ Sv).

I haven't had the oppertunity to run them against the Wolves yet, but theyll either bomb Scouts or wrecked Rhino passangers or shoot his Rhinos or Whirlwind in the rear with the Exarchs 3 BS5 S5 shots. As Space Wolves are pricey point-wise and there won't be a miriad of units to shoot, I'll probably be Dooming the same unit that both the Hawks bomb and the DAs shoot. They'll also be viable to hit his often stationary and unaccopmanied Whirlwind with some Haywires. He'll have a chance to shoot at it the turn before of course, but if he wants to focus his Whirlwind on them and not my deadlier units, i'm fine with that.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

Hawks are great unit, they can even kill tanks and Tau/ Guard etc in close combat. If you are going to shoot something, shoot whatever is Doomed, if anything.

love the hawks for what they are but spiders are also cool

"We are the wolf that stalks
The stars in the sky

And swallows the star-fire

We hide amongst the night
When light is gone

The Light is within us

We run the ruin of Fire
In the darkness

Foes burn in our passing "

"The weak will always be led by the strong. Where the strong see purpose and act, the weak follow; where the strong cry out against fate, the weak bow their heads and succumb. There are many who are weak; and many are their temptations. Despise the weak for they shall flock to the call of the Daemon and the Renegade. Pity them not and scorn their cries of innocence - it is better that one hundred innocently fall before the wrath of the Emperor than one kneels before the Daemon."

I'd stay away from them.
They may be considered against horde armies but not against MEQ.
They have a tank hunting ability. But after targetting the tank
they might be dead.

Hawks are fun and very cool models. Thematically, they are great. Do they have the best "efficiency per point" ratio? No, but sometimes you have to field stuff that makes you HAPPY, not what is the uber-death machine. I say, if you like them, go for it (in moderation).

Anyway, regarding Hawks, I find that they excell against guard, or against anyone in planetstrike. THey are especially useful if you have 3 small squads that you bounce each turn, dropping bombs as they go. That kind of list lends itself well to dual autarchs.

...snip...

Nobody wastes fire on Hawks in Apocalypse, so they work well there, too.

This. I gladly get my hawks out in Planetstrike / Apocalypse games. There's usually lots of armor on the table and there are many more scary things on the board that your opponent will likely divert resources too. As was said earlier in the thread they don't always need to destroy vehicles to be effective. Getting a weapon destroyed result on things like vindicators or any other vehicle with one primary weapon can be just as effective.

For normal sized games they're just not good enough to make it in an all comers list. Although I'm tempted to try them out again as I do like the models.
