They do playtest.
just not in large enough numbers of games, and at bizarre points values.
Most special characters get no pre-release games. Which is why they are always super mega fantastic, or totally lame.
I've been to the studio and seen playtest games in mid game. It does happen.

I think everyone knows that, but unfortunately think it's 'hip' to bash. Really ashame, as it's getting overwhelming around here these days.

Just joking, you guys are gonna have that 'dex for a while!
Can someone explain to me why the current CM dex is "Bad"?
I don't really mind it.
In fact, I find CSM slightly overpowered compared to some armies...

Chaos Space Marines lost a huge amount of creativity with what you could do with them from the codex change from 3rd to 4th.
Since going as different types of chaos space marines no longer have any real point anymore other than fluff wise. Chaos is as dry as standard marines with spikey bits on them. While there are some powerful builds that work (Lash spam ahoy or berserker spam) it's just very... very... ...v..e..r...y....... If that is true i pray to god they fix the insane costings of units.. especialy crisis suits. Oh.. and they mainstream the XV9 too as a codex unit kthx

Okay, so maybe it's wrong to claim they don't playtest.
They do "playtest" armies...just not correctly. The way they "playtest" armies isn't the way you're supposed to playtest them, that's why sometimes you see gak in codices that makes you wonder what the feth it was they were thinking.
They do "playtest", it just doesn't matter because they do it on a nonsensical way.

They do playtests?
This seems to be some good news.
After seeing some gimmicks in the codex releases like the lash
its hard to believe that they did playtests in the past.

I'm sure they do playtests, with the people who design the books, and thus know how it's supposed to work and play it as such.

I know this is Ot to the original thread premise but...
The main problem is that they did have a system in place that allowed outside playtesters.
I know of one who is now in New Zealand, and 3 in the UK.
I also suspect an australian player was involved with HEs in last edition WHFB.
But they did not like getting negative feedback and the perception was that honest and balanced critisism was attacking the designers (the studio design members felt this, not the bean counters), so the system was wound back giving us:
WHFB VC, Daemons, and Dark Elves.
The old system balanced armies beautifully, it started to break down at high elves and it has totally disintegrated for the above 3 armies.

Well going Ot of the Ot talk, I was looking at the codex releases since the 5th ed rule book came and the pattern is (with how small it is) Marine, Imperial (Guard, Which/Demon hunters ect.)/Xeno, Marine, Imperial/Xeno, Marine....
There is another pattern that I have heard of that goes Marine, Xeno, Imperial (possibly including Tau/Eldar) repeating. The issue there is that you would need to start that pattern at the 5th ed Guard release.
So if GW is going by the first pattern I would say the next dex will be BA, with the second pattern it could be Tau.
I don't think that we will be seeing WH, DH, or Necrons any time soon and DE any time soon after those three they all need alot of work both in rules and models ( DE most of all). I believe that we might see pure 5th ed dexes for WH and DH but I would think that Necrons and DE will come out late enough to have 6th ed in mind with the dexes (just IMHO).
But this is GW we are talking about so I could just be spouting a load of you never know.

QFT.
You'll note in the forthcoming WD there is a mention about one of the teams Eldar army being "away" as the design studio have borrowed it for playtesting.
I hasten to add I wouldn't take this to mean work is very far on Codex Eldar at all though.

We've heard many stories about how 'balanced' and 'unbiased' their playtesting is though.
I mean really! People's feelings being hurt by honest, critical feedback?
Explains a lot though.
So, by strict definition of playtesting, no, they probably don't playtest.
If you know what I mean.

Probably because the developers personally identify with certain armies or something.. I dont get it
Youd think theyd make the UM special characters actually good compared to Vulkan the All Mighty.. since uh the entire studio worships calgar before bed

But on topic, from what information I have gathered from here Dakka and from Warseer, the rumors say that 2010 would be Tyranids, Beasts (both confirmed to be true), Blood Angels, Tomb Kings and Necrons (in random order if at all).
Tomb Kings and Necrons would be sweet for me, I have both and they're both long overdue
