E-Bay should be your friend. CSM can be had for pennies on the dollar if you're not terribly picky about their condition. Not any big thing to pick up models for $.25-$.50 a shot. Add in that there's a ton of stuff you can proxy effectively and you can have a perfectly good working army for cheap. I'm not 100% sure I'd even bother with the codex. I think you can scrounge up point values from the main rule book or the internet (maybe, GW cracked down on this sort of stuff recently).

Lurking and listening for the first few months is a very good habit to get into when starting a hobby. You can even glean good advice from previous threads and pass them along to folks who don't use the serach function.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Observations on complex unit wound allocation: If you're feeling screwed, your opponent is probably doing it right.

Hi all.
Just to point out there are loads of wargames that DONT use minatures at all.
So you can wargame for ALL you life without buying-painting a single minature if you dont want to!

Only the hobby of table top minature gaming requires minatures.(For obvious reasons... )

I have let friends play one of my armies when they are competing against me or someone else at my house, a friends house or a FLGS that I am familiar with – I never trusted someone to walk around my army but as long as I was there I was fine with them using my miniatures. They either didn’t have an army themselves or wanted to try out something different.

Make friends with someone with multiple armies and tell them you are interested in the game but not willing to spend a lot of money at the time being. They might be willing to host you when you are playing against them as I was. It is actually a decent deal for them as it grants them another opponent, I would just lend out a codex and a list of my total models for that army. They would email their army list and I could get the game ready to go when they showed up at my house. So find someone with multiple armies and a shortage of opponents and work something out. If you lived near me I would be open to having you play against me with one of my armies with only a few exceptions (some characters may only be used by me due to sentimental attachment.) That is if you struck me as being reasonably responsible and respectful of my property.
