Darwin was not a devout Catholic, as such he could not be buried in Westminster Abbey where he currently is. He was in fact an Anglican, and was training to be a priest, but became an agnostic after his voyage aboard the HMS Beagle. Just pointing out accurate history is all...

As he is a hero of mine, I have read a great many books about Darwin. I have not checked out the Wikipedia link (as i am very loathe to believe an encyclopedia that everyone on earth can just add stuff too!) but i am absolutely certain he was Church of England. In which case, Stuart is correct. Just going from memory i think its fair to say after his books publication which he refered to as "my little heresy" he will have been agnostic about Religion.

Its true to say he wasnt aggressive about his feelings however, he genuinely strikes me as a pleasant and amiable chap. He wasnt a militant atheist like his friend Thomas Huxley. And i have read about arguments he had with his more aggressive contemporaries on this subject. He felt that "athesim" was a very strong word to use, when it was impossible to prove a negative, and apparently told Huxley that atheism was just agnostic "writ aggressive"

If i am wrong, i shall happily hold my hands up and apologise, but im 99% certain about it. Hence i disagreed with Garret on both counts earlier. He most certainly was not a catholic, and absolutely not a devout one.

@frgsinwntr - Nowhere does it state in that article that Darwin was Catholic, it states that he was Anglican (Church Of England). Plus It corroborates everything that JEB said about him being Agnostic in later life.

How is that disagreeing?

On October 22nd 1996 Pope John Paul the second updated the Church's position to accept the evolution of the human body. And a great many Catholics have accepted it as a fact, though many wish to believe that it was God that started the whole process off.

Secondly. Darwin was not a "devout" Catholic. And his discovery certainly did change his opinion. And before you even start with the unmitigated garbage that is about to follow, quoting Kent Hovind, Kurt Cameron or Ray Comfort or perhaps reputable scientists you might want to quote mine, neither was he a nazi, a fan of the slave trade or an imbecile.

Thirdly, the words "free from superstition" Are offensive? In what way? If you believe in thigs that have no evidence for them then by definition it is superstition.

I find many many things offensive. Doesnt mean i dont think we should be allowed to talk about it though.

The USA is a "free speech zone" so get used to it.

But remember Dakka is not.

On topic - I go with Lincoln in the fight, an easy win against an old man whose a bit out of shape having spent too much time in his study. Ultimately though Darwin would have the last laugh as Lincoln's decendants would evolve along this violent anti-science theme and the US would desolve into a bunch of barbaric states where powdered wigs were mandatory, leaving them open to domination by the French!

Lincoln had the reach, but Darwin had his secret atheist powers... too tight to call.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Did you even read that, or are you content with taking up thread space. Taken from your own source: When going to Cambridge to become an Anglican clergyman, he did not doubt the literal truth of the Bible.

You are correct sir. I know because not only did Wikipedia say it is true, but a professor who wrote my recommendation for my PhD program is a historian who just finished a book on Darwin. A good Englishman who went to King's College in London, so you know he can be trusted.

Thomas Huxley was an agnostic, in fact he coined the term agnostic. As is often the case with philosophers, his views on religion tended to appear more extreme due to his relatively sterile discussion of it.

"in 1879 he wrote that "I have never been an atheist in the sense of denying the existence of a God. – I think that generally ... an agnostic would be the most correct description of my state of mind."[150][78]"

I think his self admission of being agnostic disagrees with the catholic statement. This is cited as from a letter; Darwin, C. R. to Fordyce, John, 7 May 1879

I did read the article, I just failed to read JEB's statement. Sorry Jeb your way of writing comes across to me as abrasive and flamish... and I don't pay much attention to you. Thanks Albatross for pointing that out
