Great report, pics, army and tactical advice - very useful to me as a relative newbie to IG.

That last battle seemed very much like the 40k equivalent of a manga-style clash of twins - Ken and Ryu in street fighter terms.

dpaul, would you say you picked up some tips and inspiration for your build from freddie?

And freddie, I'm totally going to copy your hydra conversion when I can afford it...

Run a whole lot of wfrp and other rpg's, play The Woods and Kill Team, gather and look mournfully at imperial guard knowing I'll never finish enough to use them on the tabletop

This year the 7th Galen shall be joining a league event wherein we are supposed to play other players in my sector round robin. the top 4 get to advance to play versus the top 4 of the other sector, and the finals shall have the victor win the new large WH carrying case.....the finals are set in march....

I shall be hopefully posting the batreps in another thread...

Great reports and good looking armies all around.

It seemed like all of your games were very well fought on both sides, never did it seem that you totally outmatched your foe.

I have to say that I absolutely love the Salamander missile launcher from the first game who has just fired his missile and is all lit up from the rocket.

Also, dpaul's camo scheme for his vehicles in particular was very eye catching - were they airbrushed?

Your army, as I have said before, looks great as well!

Awesome job.

maybe you can help me with something the vendetta or valkyrie as neither being a dedicated transport how can a unit come in reserve in the valkyrie or vendetta and be dropped off am i missing something in the rule book.

In short:
The valk is a non-dedicated transport
A unit can start inside a transport (either it's own dedicated one, or a non-dedicated) in reserve, you then roll collectively for the unit and its transport (or in this case, the transport and its unit)

Of course. afterall, he has been playing guard since forever. I have been the longer player but been out most part of the decade (I literally had to dust off my miniatures). I played with IG back in 98' just cause they said no one can win with em (and I did). Coversaves (5+) shouldn't technically qualify as "saves" back then if it were up to me. When I got back and in the process of shaking off rust, Freddie showed me that they now played an integral part in gameplay. The main difference in our armies is that I am just used to the basketball mentality of "role playing" (not the freaky kind ) where my units are tailored to deal with specific tasks.

Yep, come day 1 I had zero vehicles painted, they told me I had till day 2 since judging wouldn't happen till then. Day 2 I had 10 vehicles painted. Its 4 Different shades camo, with vendetta getting the tiger stripe pattern, and tanks getting the ripple pattern (think light reflections on water). Although it took me more than a month to do all the details (paneling, semi-worn out look, dust tracks, etc.) afterward.

Airbrush is a great investment especially if you are really into the hobby or do professional painting jobs on the side like I do.

Yeah I love the part that cover plays now, takes 40K one step closer to reality - if only a tiny step - and makes IG so much more viable. I also took a big break - while at uni, trying to make trendy mates, oh the folly of youth - but got sucked back in via Dan Abnett's fiction, the one thing I couldn't give up.

And there's nothing in principle wrong with the freaky kind of roleplaying - I refer you to http://6.media.tumblr.com/bYj1RFirVnmi7wtpFej5TiCjo1_500.gif created back in the 90's by Brunching Shuttlecocks - but it's a bit like group sex. Only do it with people you trust intimately, but don't mind losing as friends all the same.
In reference to your kind of role-playing (shall we say role-tailoring for differentiation?) I've been learning to start doing the same, as especially with IG you'll probably lose the unit in the course of it performing that role, making any diversification of equipment a points-waste. Do you have any smaller army lists up on dakka somewhere I can see if I can learn from?

I couldn't really make out in the pics, how much of your army is old-school minis? Or am I right in deducing you joyfully splashed out on all-new FW ones?

Yeah man, I put a list up, it's a kind of list I would work with but nothing too fancy. You can check it at http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/273838.page#1249582 .... As for the minis, all of them are new. I lost/sold a lot of minis since I use to do commission work on the side. The only old school minis I have are the 1st production of Necrons which are all metal (IMHO the immortals look waaay cooler so I'm not going to field it unless I find a few more of em ).

Wow. When I wanted to play IG, I was always drawn to Sentinals. The only thing that made me decide on other armies was the cost of Mech Guard... It's not nearly as easy to convert a crappy tank into a Chimera as it is to convert it into a Trukk!

I actually have a full body tattoo, but it's of an invisibility cloak, so you can't see it.

Yeah, IG is probably the most expensive army I had to assemble, and that includes my first production Necrons... all metal. It hurts your wallet. But there are ways to have a good guard army while still making it fairly affordable. Conversions are one. After all, most of the tank lineup is from a Chimera body. And the we also get the best bits included. I know of a few tricks to save money while still making a competitive guard army.

Nah, he got gear *better* than ebay. Very rare for things to be all that cheap on ebay these days...

For manticore i have found old I.G. hunter killer tubes work well. Magnetized to sides of aegis defense line turret, the base piece of the turret not the smaller upper piece. You can also use aegis autocannons on same missle magnets. great looking army btw, i also enjoy RR/scout sent. fun.

Mine was simply the eversor assassin with a different backpack and a meltabomb attached...his pistol and clawed hand with the injector thingies attached really represent the ripper pistol and poisoned blade well....besides, I envision the AGENT to be a ninja type of killer, much better in a wetsuit or bodysuit, more like Solid Snake...
