I turn to dakka because i can count on some people being better informed then me, allowing me to seem less ignorant.

I can provide some examples of times we've failed then.

The Holocaust, Genocide in Darfur, Saddam's massacre of those who didn't follow his exact belief.

Sadly shuma is right on this one. You are a teenager, and though when I was your age I tried to be somewhat versed in the ways of the world I really didnt care at all. The truth is once you get older, and start to see how things like this affect your pay, your taxes, your families safety THEN you will care. Until that day though avoid it, and enjoy yourself because once you get older things get much more complicated.

I get told that a lot. But my pessimestic nature tends to doubt that.

Thats funny, because I still don't give a gak. Perhaps if I had children.

IMHO, I find it is not really the fact that I have kids. I just like to know what is going on in the world. I am neither for nor against Obama.
I have rarely left California, but when I drove cross country, I realized there was a lot more going on than in my little bubble.

I am a damaged individual screaming random obscenities into the internet, sorry if I upset you.

It is sad but true but your vote will never count. Ever. Even if somehow an election was decided by a single vote then it would head to straight to the courts as both sides sought recounts and argued over whether to count or disregard lots of diffrent kinds of votes.

It is unlikely that foreign policy will impact your life that much. We've just had our war for this generation, and it'll be a while before another one is affordable and politically viable. Most other foreign policy will have little effect on your life, outside of some indirect economic effects that'd be almost impossible to measure.

There are a lot of reasons that people take an interest in foreign affairs. Lots of people are able to invest emotional concern in people outside of their own personal experiences - it matters to them that people they haven't met are starving. Or because some part of them is invested in humanity as a whole, in an idea that we're getting better or that we as a species won't allow others to suffer. Others like it as part of the politicals, either because they're a footsoldier for one of the political parties or because they like politics as a game. Some people just like to be informed about how the world works, whether its the human tragedies or the architecture of the Baroque era they just generally like to learn new things. Others still take an interest because because its expected by their social circles.

If none of those categories fit, then no you probably aren't going to be interested. But remember, whether you care or not your vote won't make a difference.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

About to eat your Avatar...

Well... technically your vote among many is what matters, but yes, your vote will never be the one to break a tie or anything like that. Especially in the U.S.

Some of the best advice I have heard, is to focus as much as possible on the situations that are closest. Try to follow what is going on in your county, or city. If you manage to get involved in anything, you'll start to understand why larger problems can be so ridiculously difficult to solve.

Oskar Schindler saved over a thousand Jews from the Holocaust. General Dallaire is credited with saving over 32,000 Tutsis and Hutus. One person caring can mean A LOT.

Point made.

But at those times, a large portion of humanity did fail, that can at the least be argued.
