I use the TheWarStore.com's ecostore for my infantry: http://www.thewarstore.com/EconoBoxFigureStorage.html. 11$ The case is cardboard but it comes with a good foam insert for 60 standard infantry.

For my wife's Orks which are a little more irregular we use a butter cookie tin (3.50$ at wallmart) and rare earth magnets in the bases (.04$ apiece).

If you buy gun cases for your army, just remember not to leave them sitting in your car unless they are in the trunk. People are more likely to try and steal em thinking they've got guns inside.

They're made of plastic and are compartmentalized to hold thread. Each compartment will hold 2-3 models (Depending on size) and unless you drop it on the ground from chest height, they won't break. And if you do want some extra padding, just throw in some cotton balls or toilet paper into each compartment. JoAnn's even sells these nifty big plastic containers that can hold about eight tanks (Again, depending on size) with a handle on top to carry them all. Just layer them in groups of two, with a piece of foam or something similar between each layer, and it's perfect for storage.
WHAT??? Of COURSE you need metal boxes! You should always transport your troops in... metal boxes.

My friend uses egg cartons. Cheap, and they stack decently in a cardboard box.
