Thank the world for small favors.
You also forgot "ban guns except for police and military use."
|
--The whole concept of government granted and government regulated 'permits' and the accompanying government mandate for government approved firearms 'training' prior to being blessed by government with the privilege to carry arms in a government approved and regulated manner, flies directly in the face of the fundamental right to keep and bear arms.

You also forgot "ban guns except for police and military use." Not sure why that ones so funny. I guess insofar as it weakens the ability of the people to perform a popular revolt, but it would markedly reduce gun crime when the mere act of possessing a gun is an offense for which someone can be booked (rather than possessing one, but then going through the process of checks to see if it's been legally acquired). Not to say they wouldn't be able to get guns, it would just make it more difficult to procure them through semi legal channels (gunshows lol) and easier to track the sale of arms within gang or drug related crimes. I find it funny when people say Americans are the "hardest working" people on earth. For that to be true you either have to ignore where it says thailand on the back of all your clothes or you have to discount non europeans/americans as people.

Well, from what I've had pounded into my head by humanitarians and so called "economics experts" is that outsourcing and exporting/importing is what makes this country go around, so apparently "Made in Thailand" is good for the US even if it means 500 workers get laid off from their job so their boss can save $10K per year on labor.
It was a stab at the fact guns are illegal in the UK unless you are cop or military. Gun laws are decidedly state over here but anyone passing a background check can own one.
So I was adding to the list of what we can be thankful for here in the US.
As well, reducing or banning guns cannot be proven it would decrease gun crime.

500 get laid off in america so that 2500 get hired in thailand. They pay less and hire more. Do Americans inherently deserve the chance at prosperity more than those in other nations?

And anyone who just goes to a gunshow.
As well, reducing or banning guns cannot be proven it would decrease gun crime.
You also can't proof gravity, but the logical outcome of a reduction of the prevalence of an item it the reduced prevalence of said item. Half assing gun laws doesn't work, it's all or nothing. Going all in does work, going half in does not. When you close all channels of access the illegal ones are the hardest and last to close, but so long as legal ones exist the illegal can never be prevented.

It wouldn't decrease gun-crime in the US - a ban would take generations to have any effect IMO - but it seems to work for us. We have less guns and less gun-crime.
But we do have more booze, and more booze crime - so 'swings and roundabouts'...

Truth. Guns are unbannable in america. It simply couldn't happen without some sort of clarion call to action that everyone in the nation heeded.

Hey Shuma, you were the one that brought up "I find it funny when people say Americans are the hardest workers when you can look at most products and it says Made in Thailand."
So how can you criticize American work ethics and then defend employers who lay off 100's or 1,00's of American workers to hire cheap foreign labor?
That's like telling people a child molester is a monster and then defending him by saying "well, the 12yo he raped was running around her back yard in just a pair of shorts and nothing else so she was asking for it."

I defended the concept of globalized and distributed manufacture, not the dudes that exploit foreign workers. There's a difference between china and the Philippines.

After seeing first hand working and living conditions in third world countries, I have to say that your definition of prosperity is at a variance with mine.

Go a few posts lower where I say that there's a difference between an indonesian sweatshop and a thai or chinese factory. One is exploitation, one is globalization, you don't go from nothing to making cars for 22 dollars an hour.

Versus what though? Nothing? Farming pitiful amounts of food?
Outsourcing is most definitely providing many countries with value they need so greatly. This is not to say that there aren't terrible atrocious working conditions. This aside though, in terms of defining prosperity, I can pretty much guarantee there is a very good reason for people to be taking those jobs. When the tables turn (and I would not be all that surprised about this) people in 'first world' countries will be forced to lower their standard of living to be able to compete effectively in the global economy.
I highly doubt that the U.S. will become a 'third world country', but seeing wages stagnate to the point of deflating our economy (as it basically is now) would not be astonishing by a long shot. There is a certain sense of entitlement, but that is linked to the standard of living that people are used to. I have been poor, and to be perfectly honest it can be just as hard to survive in the U.S. as it is in many places throughout the world. It is obviously easier on most counts though, clearly.
China's 'middle class' exceeds that of the entire population of the U.S., of course... there are some serious problems with the treatment of their underclass, to say the least.
