When in a video game you have to select the language and the flag next to "English" is the American flag.

Can't tell if serious or not. Just in case here goes.

Spanish - Spanish Flag
French - French Flag
German - German Flag
English - American flag

That's right, those so called "English" from "England" can suck it! USA...USA...USA...

American, or English as it is known colloquially, saves valuable programming space by disposing of the totally unnecessary 'u' prevalent in traditional British English.

Using American also prevents a common glitch where an English game will stop running at 3pm for 'Tea time'. It will refuse all offers of golf clubs, and will only be satisfied by tiny cucumber sandwiches and hot tea- some sort of barbaric alternative to coffee.

I think that's just for this part of the world.

When I took a bus tour through Eastern and Central Europe, the rest stop convenience store attendants in Serbia, Slovakia, and Hungary had little flags on their name tags indicating what languages they spoke. It was always the Union Jack for English. Likewise with multilingual product labeling in that part of the world- the English part of the label has the British flag next to it.

Here at work, for fun and quick reference, we have little flags on the corners of the cubes for the multilingual folks. Of course it’s a point of minor annoyance/injustice that we have the Spanish flag for all our Spanish speakers, when none of them are actually from Spain or directly descended from Spain. Guatemala, Puerto Rico, etc., but no actual Spaniards.

I have no doubt. It would be even funnier if it weren't though. Still, it reminds me of things like having to change the title of the original Harry Potter book from Philosophers Stone to Sorcerers Stone becuase it was thought no one would get the reference. They have to change the flag because no one will know who speaks english if they don't.

I've seen that to.

This is really going way more seriously then i thought it would. It just makes me laugh a bit becuase when I see it I know that out there is someone in the US that if they had put the Union Jack or St. G's Cross would be sitting there getting frustrated wanting to know why there isn't an english option.

The games (playstation 2) I have use the union jack image for english.

That's generally because it's easier to port for the PAL system from UK than to port the NTSC from the US.

Almost all PAL games that I play have the Union Jack as the option for 'English'. It's probably a regional thing.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Breaking News: America is NOT the world!

In every other country apart from the USA, the option for 'English' is represented by the Union Flag. It's understandable though, when your target market thinks 'London' is a country, don't confuse them anymore than you have to.

Or don't do.

Exactly - things we DIDN'T do:

Invent 'Junk Food'
Lose the Vietnam War
Segregation/general institutionalised racism
Let kids who aren't old enough to drink, feth or vote, own firearms.
Invent l33t. That's possibly the worst.

That's right - it's ON!

Drinking I'll give you that, sex isn't illegal between minors (just illegal between minor and adult) and you also cannot purchase a firearm of any sort under 18. You now have to be 18 to buy airsoft and paintball guns.

So your list is partially right.

Agree about Nam but another place we should not have stuck our nose into.

Racism works both ways, Segregation I imagine exists but not nearly as much as it did 100 years ago and not as long as the NAACP and ACLU exist.

I was just teasing man!

List of things the USA DIDN'T do:

Invent Black Pudding.
Or Haggis.
Crush half of the world under it's Redcoated imperialist jackboot (THAT actually looked like fun, though).
Invent 'Morris Dancing'.
Wales. Just in General.
Keep attacking it's near neighbours and claiming 'they started it'.

...so it's not ALL bad news .
