it should be illegal for crap artists to cover good songs.

It's days like this that I'm quite happy that this computer can't see Youtube.
I have nephews who love the site. Unfortunately they only did up the most annoying tosh and play it over and over if they are allowed access to my computer.
In order to prevent me killing the little dears, I have put a block in the browser settings. Now they are restricted to having VH1 play it.
I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

Australia (Recently ravaged by the Hive Fleet Ginger Overlord)
Hang on, my younger cousin loves this song. It's her favourite (just above Miley Cyrus etc.). And personally I can't see what's too terrible about it either.
Sure it's not the best song I've ever listened to by far. But it's not THAT bad.

Albatross wrote:It really wasn't much different to Lady Gaga at all - her voice is slightly different, but the production and overall style was practically identical. It wouldn't have sounded out of place on 'The Fame'. Once it got to the chorus I quite liked it - which is more than I can say for anything I've heard by Gaga. There were some pretty creative flourishes, production-wise. Hated the verse for the most part.
I don't know how you could tote your musicology badge and not see how this is different and why it would have been horribly out of place on The Fame. The overall vocal quality is zilch, the song's lyrics are exceedingly shallow and the backing tracks were infinitely more canned. I don't think there's any comparison; Gaga has themes that run through her songs and each one has about three layers (especially stuff off The Fame Monster). I've said it before, but my other half of music consumption for all practical purposes is Dream Theater so I'm not entirely a random fan noob. I can analyze things, break them down and see what's actually at the core. I think given some effort on your part you could see the difference, but to each his own.
And humps is pretty freakin annoying, but not the most annoying piece of "hip-hop/whatever-they-call-it-now" I've heard, sadly. That Birthday Sex song is obnoxious in it's own right because it sort of rapes your mind even when you're not hearing it.

I'm saying that even if you invest the time to try and find something deeper, it won't be there. I'm not saying anything is too deep for anyone to understand, but you do have to care enough to try in the first place (which many don't, and is fine).

As someone who listens to almost everything, from stevie ray vaughan to monolith deathcult to huun huur tu to chopin. I would say that while gaga doesnt have a lot of depth, sound quality and production wise she is an absolute professional. Rammstein comes to mind when it comes to live show production for a comparison.

I've had a little bit too much
All of the people start to rush.
Start to rush by.
A dizzy twister dance
Can't find my drink or man.
Where are my keys, I lost my phone.
What's going on on the floor?
I love this record baby, but I can't see straight anymore.
Keep it cool what's the name of this club?
I can't remember but it's alright, alright.
[Chorus:]
Just dance. Gonna be okay.
Da-doo-doo-doo
Just dance. Spin that record babe.
Da-doo-doo-doo
Just dance. Gonna be okay.
Duh-duh-duh-duh
Dance. Dance. Dance. Just dance.
Wish I could shut my playboy mouth.
How'd I turn my shirt inside out? Inside out, right.
Control your poison babe
Roses have thorns they say.
And we're all gettin' hosed tonight.
What's going on on the floor?
I love this record baby, but I can't see straight anymore.
Keep it cool what's the name of this club?
I can't remember but it's alright, alright.
[Chorus]
[Colby O'Donis]
When I come through on the dance floor checking out that catalogue.
Can't believe my eyes so many women without a flaw.
And I ain't gonna' give it up, steady tryna pick it up like a call
I'm gonna hit it, I'm gonna hit it and flex and do it until tomorrow, yeah
Shorty i can see that you got so much energy
The way you twirling up them hips round and round
There's no reason at all why you can't leave here with me
In the meantime stay, let me watch you break it down.
[Chorus]
Half Psychotic, Sick hypnotic got my blueprint its symphonic.
Half Psychotic, sick hypnotic got my blueprint electronic.
Half Psychotic, Sick hypnotic got my blueprint its symphonic.
Half Psychotic, sick hypnotic got my blueprint electronic.
Go. Use your muscle, carve it out, work it, hustle
I got it, just stay close enough to get it
Don't slow! Drive it, clean it lysol, bleed it
Spend the last dough
(I got it)
In your Pocko
(I got it)
Deep.
To say that the track you posted is completely different to Lady Gaga is just wilfully obtuse. They are very similar musically, sonically - the above song even covers similar themes.
I think given some effort on your part you could see the difference, but to each his own.
Please don't patronise me - I spend my days analysing musical scores. Of course there are superficial differences, but there would be little to seperate the two artists in terms of fundamental generic indication. The similarities outweigh the differences. You claim I tote my 'musicology badge? You just toted your 'I listen to Dream Theatre therefore I am discerning' badge!
The difference being Gaga is tolerable, and that other thing is terrible. Its similar to when Iron Maiden does a battle song and some power metal band like Sabaton does. They are both doing something similar, but Maiden can do it better. Same reason Van Halen is a legend. Alot of those 80s hair metal/hard rock bands were similar, but they just did it better.
On a side note: christmas tree is a gak tier song.

You just did the equivalent of saying that Santana is only as good as the crappy collaboration song he did with Michelle Branch. I would hardly call that Gaga's finest hour, whereas the track I posted is cited as Ke$ha's big hit. Miles apart. As far as you toting your musicology badge, I say more power to you. You at least have the credentials to show on paper, whereas I have to hope you take me as someone other than a guy just randomly saying crap on the internet Was by no means meant as an attack or something negative. I think you're dismissing Gaga as less than she is still. It's not all about her music either, and the image adds to the music in this case, rather than the other way around, likewise the context in the album.

Totally agreed. I believe the story involves her and Space Cowboy being really bored and releasing it for the hell of it. I still enjoy it, however

@Cannerus - You said she was deep - THAT was my retort! Your opinion is perfectly valid and I would never suggest anything otherwise - neither would I suggest the Lady Gaga's music has no 'value'. All music has as much inherent 'value' as any other piece - absolutely ZERO. Value is subjective and as such, not fixed.
Gaga is not to my taste, neither is Ke$ha for that matter. I can see why she would appeal to some people, I'm just not one of them.
Totally understandable. If you're ever back in Gaga land, try listening to The Fame in it's entirety as a self-parody or as indulgence to the point of ridiculousness, with that same described ridiculous indulgence as the end result. It speaks on more levels than one might suspect

Then, by simple principal, I will denounce anything you like to listen to and say it is not music at all...
Seriously, though... I like screaming in my music. And that blanket statement also defaced the 8 other musicians in the band. Give them credit on technical merit alone... even if you dislike Corey's vocal style... Speaking of that... Have you even really listened to Slipknot? Just curious...
/boggle At least I hate GaGa for logical reason's of not understanding the hype, and not being into the music genre...
Thank you, good sir, for showing some common sense. I enjoy some of the songs, but on others (I'm looking at you Sulphur.) I tune out the lyrics to just listen to the instrumental parts.
Beisde, Cheese, you are insulting Dethklok. DOn't make them angry. You wouldn't like Toki when he's angry. Now listen to Bloodtrucuted, and enjoy the guitars and drums at least.

I just love it that this thread has been turned into a personal battleground by certain people who may or may not have qualifications behind their opinions. I guess the rest of us need "experts" to tell us what to listen to. I, on the other hand always crank up the radio whenever an AC/DC song comes on, regardless of which one it is. (AC/DC+Beer=Party!)

Don't be an arsehole. Both me and Cannerus have made it abundantly clear that we were just voicing our opinions - no-one is telling anyone what to listen to.
I wouldnt say that all music is subjective or of equal value.
I could get up on stage with an out of tune guitar and pick random notes while trying to yodel, and that would not have as much value as much music. Someone mentioned slipknot, I would not say that they have the same level of talent that say david bowie has. But generally yes music can be subjective.
@Eidolon - My point is that you can't eat music, you can't drink it - it is entertainment, and as such is non-essential, i.e has no inherent 'value'. But of course there is music that I think is good, and music that I think is bad. An african bushman might not appreciate Mozart, and I don't like Britney Spears - but that's irelevant, as SOMEONE does.
