Language is constantly evolving, and the standards of education, especially at the college level, are generally behind the trend. And, it must be said that most people past their teenage years are set in their language patterns.

But what's the point of keeping up with the trends of language, when everyone speaks colloqially to such a degree that many words (in the sense of having a large vocabulary) are not understood anyway?

It doesn't offend me that much to be honest - although if someone comes along and tries to flame me, and they seem barely literate, I'll fething slaughter them for it.
It sadly isnt. I had only one grammer lesson my entire time in high school. It the phrase "its the intention that matters." it is even worse in cali were some of our tests even use the word "Bra"(like bro but more lazy)
-to many points to bother to count.

I used to run a bar in Manchester and can wholeheartedly agree with this: The standard of some of the CV's handed in was quite laughable.
I don't particularly care about poor grammar on forums (except when there is no punctuation whatsoever) as long as i can understand what someone is posting.
@Albatross: Good point, just be extra careful when you do that though
@Binky: I try not to use colloquialisms online, it would only confuse people (Off t'scranner, t'is hossin' t'slart). Yorkshire ftw

@J. Black - I'll never forget when I was on holiday and someone asked me "Gun t'up beach?"
I hate all the text talk on forums that some people do. Speaking of text speak Ali G was on last night...the best bit...

Of course, as an American, that means I must say that soccer sucks, and football (real football... you know, the one where you do everything with your hands) is 10,000 times as good. I mean, football players could probably beat up soccer players, even, because they actually know sports.

The fact that the use of "L" and "R" isn't totally confused on the net is good enough for me. It took my mother-in-law two years before she could spell my last name correctly. The p!ss poor grammar used on the internet is Shakespearean prose compared to what I'm exposed to on a daily basis.

Yep, Japanese interpretation of English can be a hoot.
I got a classic letter from my wife once where she wrote that she was watching a TV news report about London and thought it must be cold because people were wearing 'grabs'.

When I first washed up on the beaches here some 12 years ago, I thought a Rub hotel was a chain of massage parlours. I was pleasantly surprised when my first GF took me to one. I thought I was going to get a back rub!
