Well I thought I would grace you all with some progress shots. I've repaired/rebuild the canopy of the lightning and gotten a heap of extra work done on the 1kSons. A friend of mine suggested I break up the colour of the bolters, so I've added some extra differently coloured detail to them to take away their pictorial dominance...

Have a look:

I've gotten a bit further this week - as well as played around with some other techniques getting ready for the coup-de-grace on the lightning. That'll come soon enough - I just have to (still) work out what order to do stuff to it!

And the near complete first fifteen:

The quality of the paintjob - top notch. keep it up, had some thoughts on the WIP shots but the near completed looks smashing

Well not really an update but kinda cool...

I never realised how good an army could look in a display case! I always liked my Tyranid army and the way it looked, but have never had it in a display. This week I took it down to our local shop for them to display it as part of a promo for the new nids and WOW! It looks amazing in the cabinet. I'm totally shocked and how much better it looks!

I thought I'd show off my babies with some ordinary looking pics of them in a display case :p

Well I've been playing around with some stuff today. I decided to practice with some pastels so out they came and I did up the base for the lightning.

Woah.

I love pastels.

I just can't wait until the lightning is to the level where I can weather it with them...and I'm almost there...

I've also done a comparison with two of the Thousand Sons, I weathered one using some pastels to give it a bit of an aged dusty look - let me know if you prefer the effect with the colours dulled down some with the pastels and if you think I need less or more...

Enjoy!!

I think the pastels vs. no pastels on the T-Sons is really up to your taste of what you're going for. I don't think one looks markedly better than the other. The dusty look is nice on the one with the pastels, but frankly, the brighter look also has it's place, too. Both look great!

The colour schemes on that Court of the Young King are the best I have ever seen, and the technical ability shown in the paining is awesome too.

I prefer the weathered T-Son, but as DBM said it is more of a personal thing. They both look nice.

WOW! as has been said, your work is AMAZING Lemmingspawn, I am almost ashamed to say I missed the Iron Warriors and Ork Blimp blogs so I had to read them start to finish...

But yeah, I don't think there's too noticable a difference of the thousand sons, I think I preferred the weathered one, but maybe make it look a bit more weathered?

Also, do you do this (commissions etc.) as a job, or do you need to have another job too? Just out of interest as its something I've always wondered...

great job again Lemming!

Well that's complicated to answer - lol... I'm doing the Thousand Sons as a commission as is the lightning for the same person. And I get to do these while I do my main job - my hands are free for the majority of the day so I can paint and convert while I work...

Ideal situation

This is really excellent work Lem. Im a huge fan of your Iron Warriors and the Sons will be right up there with them on the scale of awesomness.

And the Lightning is spiffy as well!

As a bit of a temporary distraction from the Thousand Sons I've been asked to do a display model up for our local shop. I'm doing a Mawloc and it'll be done up in Phil Kellys' Jormangandr colour scheme I've done the rest of my tyranids in.

Here are two of my carnifexes I did a couple years ago:

And here is the constructed and based Mawloc ready for undercoating:

I attempted to make the base look like it's sitting on the hole that it burst out of. I think I did ok, but if I do another I'll sculpt it with more putty or clay and make it deeper and more convincing.

I cut and redirected the tail a bit to straighten it out and show the hole a bit more. I had to remove 2 links out of the tail to make it work, so I shaved and cut bits of it and then stuck it back together. It's got a slight kink in it but I've managed to straighten it mostly to make it look like it's sposed to be like that

I agree that the hole should be a wee bit more visible if you really want to make it better. However, it looks pretty cool as it is. Awesome scheme too

It's ok - the job isn't really that awesome. And it's not something everyone would be able to do, paint and work I mean. I can juggle about three things at once at the best of times - I'm very good at multitasking.

I love your Tyranids too, have you considered one of the Forge World Heirophants?

NO! I am NOT a she

I know this is a misconception of people that men cannot multitask and women can - I can multitask better than any woman I know.

I just can't multitask unimportant irrelevant things

And I hate it when people talk during movies - that's not multitasking that's just rude

I've thought about a Heirophant but the reasons I don't have one are:

1. Cost
2. Cost
3. Cost
4. Impractical in my house
5. Cost
6. I'm not sure how I could strengthen those bastard resin legs
7. Big resin models have been a pain in my experience so far
8. Cost

Maybe in the future. But not right now.

I would like some of the FW hive tyrants, both flying and non flying versions - that may come

I've been doing up the Lightning at the same time as painting up the Trygon and I have to say - the lightning is turning out so much better than I expected! I've been using some bits and bobs out of the imperial armour modelling book and it's helped me to get some bearing on this model. Because it's all experimental techniques I have not used at all, it's been a slower process than I may have taken had I done some more of this type of work. I'll definitely be doing more of this type of painting on the landraiders I have waiting for my dark angels!

Anyways - I talk too much - here are some pics of the model. It's pretty much done - I just need to do two more of the lights and I'm thinking I'll just gloss the two front headlamps, I think they look good how they are and suitably represent unlit bulbs. Let me know if you think I need to do something different with them though.

And there will be some tufts of grass on the base

That looks awesome! Personally I still struggle to like the lightning model itself but your paint job is just excellent! I particularly like the blended blues on the underside and the weathering on it! Great Work [wo]man!

That lightning does look damned spiffy. Which ForgeWorld books do you refer to? I have thought of picking some up, but I wasn't certain the cost was worth it.

The book is the Imperial Armour: Model Masterclass book 1. Of which there is only one book in the series. So far at least

Ok here is the finished model. Only took a short amount of time but it's done.

damn thats one fine model you have there, just wondering if you used an airbrush on the model and if so, what products you using for it? (researching a bit for airbrushes). i like the blend of green to blue, very realistic. Nice work.

I've been using a Paasche single action for the main airbrushing. I'm not sure the model or anything because it's actually not mine. For paints I have been using all sorts to get the feel. This one I used Tamiya colours on the desert colour areas, and Vallejo on the undercarriage. I've used Windsor and Newton Winton oil paints for the oil washes and Pledge (Future floor polish or Klear depending where you are from ) as the water soluble clear varnish. I've also been using Wattyl matte estapol as the matt varnish.

For GW and Vallejo paints I have been using a clear Windex neat as the dilution medium. For the tamiya I've just been using the tamiya x52 or whatever it's called. I don't like using water as the dilution agent in GW and Vallejo because it tends to allow the paint to run more than I would like. And paint that runs is STUPID! in this situation. The paints I generally dilute by roughly half and play from there.

I also run the Pledge straight without dilution.

I think that's about it...any painting that requires brushing on is done with GW or Vallejo. Any airbrushing is done with any of the paint I have available now, depending on colour.

I was playing around with the real colour wheel which mostly operates in the CMYK colour patterns. So when you use that the complimentary and contrasting and harmonious colours are changed in a slightly different way, meaning the usual colours for Karandras and Baharoth end up different. It was a bit of an experiment in the colour theory as well as just wanting to paint them up for giggles.

And I've wanted to do that display base for a long time. I just wish it hadn't warped on me.
