Just started a Nurgle Daemon army using heavily converted Orks because I got inspired looking at a few of the models and the creativity started swirling around. That's my typical reason.

Eldar: It was my first army and I just bought them...well I didn't know anything about them and they looked cool to me and I was looking for an army that none of my 40k friends played yet.
Nids: I started awhile back after I inherited the army from someone who no longer played and then I just expanded from there.
Marines: Started these guys from scratch. Reason I started them was 'cause I was looking for an army with more staying power and some decent vehicles. Marines seemed to fit this category best.
Cryx: Just recently bought some warmachine models and decided to start Cryx. Knowing nothing of the game I decided to just go with what looked best and that I would have the most fun painting.

I have to really love the models. The fluff is important but not the key factor.
I started Tau because I liked the look of the models, rounded out my army and got really bored being destroyed every game. I looked at Marines but are so 2d for me. Then I read the Ork Codex and the easy to convert models and found my army.

Well the army that I'm about to play now is ogres. I'm tired of painting humans and aliens so I figure a army of large creatures would be fun to paint.

For me to buy in, the models and theme have to grab me, and then I have to have a list idea that really appeals to me too.

For me I've started each army for different reasons mostly because I liked the models and wanted something different to paint. I don't have problems starting an army its finishing one thats the problem.
Tau - my first army, didn't know what I was doing really, but I liked the look of them. Haven't finished the army due to bad rules, and the long process of striping plastic to repaint.
Dark Angels - Started off as a side project when I was working on my tau. Army expanded when I got AoBR and is waiting for my wallet to allow me to get more Terminators and Bikes.
Orks - loved the models and fluff. Started with AoBR (best deal ever), like my DA waiting on my wallet to get 2 battlewagons.
Dark Elves - went to my FLGS and couldn't get a 40k game in for 2 weeks (we only have 1 game night) everyone was playing fantasy. Started a small force to get games in.
I really don't plan to start another army until I finish painting my Orks, DA and DE. However this hasn't started me from making an Orlock Necromunda gang and picking up a Farseer and some Warlocks to paint.

When I say the new Warriors of Chaos stuff being released, I knew that in some way or another, I'd end up picking up the battalion one way or another. That, and after watching too much Terminator and The Matrix, I'll be painting up some Necrons.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

I have a nasty tendency to see a model that I like and try building an army around it. I also get caught up with trying something new before the old one is finished. I have always liked dwarfs and elves. My first army started out as a slayer for warhammer quest and grew into over 5k (probably closer to 6 or 7k, haven't gone back to add all of it up), I then started a SW (3k?) for 40k thinking I should have a 40k army ready if I ever got the chance to play. While I was doing that one I was building up a WE army, probably about 4k. All of these armies are built, but only partially painted. I was always able to pick up a lot of models at bizaars. Which is how I got started on my Orks. I went to a bizaar with the intent of selling or trading (for Eldar hopefully) my black reach orks only to triple my orks for twenty bucks. Added a battle force and some more bikes plus what I had from gorkamorka and that should get me upto 3k, oh yeah, I got some gretchin too. Traded my demons for bretonnians about 1k. My dark elves were too good of a deal to pass up, I got a battalion, hydra, moriatha, chariot, shades, assassins, sorceresses, 2x bolt throwers, 10x black guard, and extra corsairs for a hundred bucks. Now I've started Eldar without finishing my dark elves. I have also always wanted lizardmen and tyranids. If I could just find the time to play then I would want to get back to building and painting too, but unfortunately the only way to feed my addiction is buying something new every month or two.

I always tend to have grand ideas about what would be cool armies to build and paint, based either on the fluff (looking at you, pre-heresy Alpha Legion) or models (tyranids, tau, IG). Then I stop dreaming and realize how much money it would cost, how much time I would need to invest in painting (I play painted models only), and those cool ideas end up in a corner of my mind.
As for the armies I'm playing, the necrons was the first one, I decided to enter a W40K campaign at the LFGS of the city I had just relocated to, so had to build up a force quickly while dusting up my painting skills (it had been 5 years without touching a paint brush). I wait for the new codex to bulk my forces and going apocalypse-sized (I have about 3k points total). Then I got bored and decided to start orks, painted 20 or so models, relocated to another country, and started painting again 3 months ago. My 1k army won't be ready before the end of the summer, how well...
The stuff I really enjoy collecting and painting are blood bowl teams. Inexpensive and fast to paint, which sadly means I tend to buy more teams than I play, since I pâint them when I enter them in leagues

Usually because I am inspired by something. Normally a film or book and I fancy doing something similar on the Tabletop.
For example I'm a lover of War movies as a result virtually all my 40K armies have been guard ones that are inspired by real conflict. I've done US Airborne themed Cadians, Panzer Division Inspired Steel Legion, a Vietnam themed army and a WW1 themed army using the old Warzone plastics (which can be picked up for a steal!)
However this really got done in when I started playing FoW a couple of years ago. Actually playing WW2 is more fun to me than playing WW2 inspired Sci-fi. Haven't done a 40K army since.

1. My Gondord army for LOTR got about 800 pts (wich is about 1000-1200 40K pts)
2. My Tau army. I didn't even finished my first and only group of fire warriors.
3. My IG army. I really like them and i've got about 950 pts. BUT i want something new.
4. I'm planning on building a French WW1 army using Renegade miniatures and The Great War source book from Warhammer historical.

I eventually want to start an IG army, but I need to first will need to meet the following criteria:
1. Have an entire FOC full of marines.
2. Have all the paints I will need for them.
3. Be able to buy the pig-iron heads.
And even then, I will continue on with my marines.
I hope to someday achieve a massive amount of them.

I've recently dumped most of my excess items for 40K/WFB/Privateer. I've stripped down to my core armies.
WFB: Skaven, High Elves, Demons
40K: Guard, Death Guard
PP: Cygnar
With start new armies, for me its now become "what armies have I always wanted? Not to be a GT gamer with but to actually paint and build. This came into 2 thoughts. I start High Elves as I love the models, man that army sucks though, but I love painting it. With 40K, I'm restarting Guard because I love tanks, tanks, more tanks on the table top.
There will be 1 final "army" that gets start in the summer. Orcs and Goblins. I'm starting this as there will be 8th edition, plus I picked up some Micro Art bodies to make Pirate Orcs. My inspiration and why:
I wanted into Mikhaila's Showcase Comics in Granite Run PA and same him making massive tank treads in January. He and I share the "if you build it, it can stomp them" mind frame. 30 minutes later we brain stormed a WFB idea. Pirate Orcs. Its going to be epic, or it will fail miserably and I'll have a pretty army
