Finally got around to ordered me a pair of these last weekend and the showed up the mail today. After a little bit of working with them, there are a couple of things I'd like to add to Mahu's excellent review. First, I've heard no one make mention of the undetailed sides on this, all the pictures only show the front or back. It's not a game breaker for me, just be aware the detail is not consist a full 360 degrees around the thing, as you can see here.

Secondly, most everyone I've seen talk about these says they got the Sharka or show pictures of a blue/purple pod. When I went to order mine, the store only had one Sharka, and one Dillosaurus. It only slightly annoyed me because for some reason the Dillosarus was $1 more than the Sharka. Now that I've messed with them a little, I've found the orange plastic used to make the Dillosarus' pod is a noticeably harder material that makes it far easier to remove mold lines and do some other dremel work on it. If you have the option, I would recommend getting Plasma Hatchers with the orange pods rather than blue/purple.

I bought 7 of those on Amazon and got all Blue or Purple ones. It seems like the orange one is also slightly taller (or is it just not pushed together all the way?).
When I bought mine I got 3 of them for $6 each and the next 4 were about $10. I see that now they are around $23 each! I guess demand is driving up that price!

The orange one just wasn't quite closed all the way, and the surface they're sitting on is not even, they're the same height.

From what I can tell, ~$20 is the standard retail price on these things. All the shops listing them for less were discounts/sales/overstock/whatever. On the plus side, the store on Amazon that's listing them for $20 has them with free shipping.

I've seen these things on the field as well... let me tell you they're really awesome looking and better than anything GW will come up with guaranteed and they're also cheaper too.

This immediately comes to mind when open spores are discussed:

Unfortunately I suspect that putting on its side would also expose the presumably undetailed base underside, but a bit of rubble should cover that?

I've seen this done with expandable foam "goop" on the inside and for the life of me I cannot find the board/thread where I saw it. It was very well executed with plastic toy squid tentacles and whatnot.

EDIT: Found it!

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Waste not want not. Can anyone describe or picture the contents.

Are they usable, convertible candy or what?

The box for plasma Hatchers seemed to have a promising bioform all of its own.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

You get a crappy wind-up dinosaur-looking thing and a blob of utterly disgusting goo. (Seriously, the stuff is like a ball of snot that never dries and leaves your skin feeling violated. feth knows how many stomach tumours it's gonna cause when kids get dared to eat the thing.)

The squid/shark-type creature has the most potential for a Nid creature, perhaps as a Tervigon/T-fex head:
