My oldest brother lived in Uganda for about 2 years. (he was a MSG in the Marines guarding the Embassy) He said that place was friggin weird as all get out. But he became friends with some local warrior tribe and actually has a kukuri (sp?) that was used in a blood sacrifice because they thought my brother was a hardcore sombitch lol

Africa is a lovely place. Most of the people there just want to live quiet lives, but end up being oppressed by one dictator or another. The country itself is beautiful, and I would recommend everyone see it.

Most of the people of any given nation/continent are exactly the same way.
That in no way changes the inherent dangers associated with visiting certain African nations. I for one, have absolutely no plans of visiting 2/3 of Africa... probably for the rest of my life.
Wanting peace, and not having a lick of it, does not make for friendly, hand-shaking types of folks. Sure, you may meet some nice people, but I would bet a million dollars (that I got from that Nigerian Banker, heh, sucker) that your vacation to "African Paradise Extravaganza" is not going to turn out very well.
Choose a safe place to vacation, not a freaking tribal warzone... regardless of how good their coffee is... .

This is so true. Apart from one tiny mistake. Its a continent
Seriously though, Africa is beautiful. It gets such bad press and has horrific regimes but none of this uglyness ever really obscures its beauty. From the rolling dunes of the Sahara to the lush rainforest of Madagasca it is one of the jewels of the world and to avoid it is almost criminal to my mind.

That says a lot, for Uganda to only get taken off the holiday list yesterday can only mean that the Americans have finally found the place on a map, perhaps about Thursday +/- one day.
O RLY? If I had a nickel for every European I met who thought the U.S. has 52 States, I could probably buy a plate of fish and chips and mail it to you. I bet it wouldn't be very delicious by the time it got there though.
Yes really. Colloquially State 51: United Kingdom State 52: Israel. We don't like it any more than you do.
Hmm fish and chips, you can order it via phone from my local chippy, that way it would be very delicious indeed when it gets to me, thank you for the offer.

Sorry, I have a dream of uniting a continent under my tyrannical rule, and, frankly, Africa looks like the best bet.
I even have a plan:
1) Butcher every living thing in random city in a failed nation state that is currently ruled by feuding warlords. (Somalia, Rwanda)
2) Surround the city with a forest of poles, each with the corpse of a person impaled on it. (If time permits, have each of their likenesses molded as a death mask across a huge concrete wall of screaming faces) [Transylvania]
3) Use mercenaries to eliminate the warlords, taking each of their skulls and using them to build a throne from which you rule. Be certain to exterminate every living relative of the dead. (Most of Europe during the middle Ages)
4) Get away with it, since the rest of the world really doesn't care about Africa until Hollywood Celebrities, Exxon, British Petroleum, and the DeBeer's Corporation tell them to. (Rhodesia, Darfur)
5) Cement my rule over a period of a decade. [duh]
6) Manipulate trade so that other, rival, despots are destabilized further, until Civil War breaks out in their countries. Invade claiming to be 'promoting peace' and then quietly snap up the country in question, passing the rival tyrant off to the Hague as a war criminal and thus generating positive press while my secret police eliminate his 'supporters' and have them executed following a secret trial. (Eastern Europe)
7) Repeat as necessary. If played right, the rest of the world will cheer all the while, and may even send support for my corrupt regime. (Columbia)

Ironically, someone once computed the cost of building the Death Star. Let's just say it would have been better invested in building shields for tie fighters and officer training for the Imperial Fleet.
And in all honesty, it'd have been cheaper to use a big rock.

That's why you double check your math so the rock doesn't hit the moon by accident.
Though shattering the moon with a relativistic rock would have pretty much the same effect, all in all...

I have a friend that went to Africa to get married. She had things fall through as far as getting married went. Since she had an open ended ticket, she just said hi ho and trekked across a good part of South Africa.
It was one of the most incredible adventures of her life and she came back after a year with some truly amazing pictures and memories.
A niece of mine has also been to Africa helping build schools and hospitals and can't wait to go back for more.
As for my self, I'm looking at going to Kenya sometime in the next year or so with my wife to help develop a coconut industry for a village there.

Which country do you guys actually LIVE in, by the way?
Exactly. Can't be all that nice if you're not willing to live there, choosing instead to live in a wealthy western democracy.

The thing is the continent is full of great beauty and wide variety of enviroments, and some of the worlds most amazing wildlife, unfortunetly you are more likly to come out better from a chance encounter from a lion than with a group of goverment sponcured genocide and rape loving miltas.
The continent is nice, the large amount of terrorists, militas, gangs, rapists, child murderer (damn those witches), albino butcherers, female cercomsizers and genocide loving goverments are not nice

I didn't say it was a nice place to live as a native but a great holiday destination and a chance to see some of the greatest scenery and animals the world has to offer. Even corrupt governments go out of their way to protect tourists as it is one of the biggest industries and they can do without the international condemnation. Just think about how many students on their gap years go to Africa and how rare it is for one to be killed.
