found this video on how to paint a kroot and i think i will try painting my orks like that.
Just a base and then wash with delvan mud. Ill let you know how it goes when i get the paint on friday

p.s. What is a good green colour. I am looking for something light but still dark. Like in between the two extremes such as goblin green and gretchin green

I use achaos black spray undercoat, then paint the orks flesh with dark angels green. A wash with dark green ink thinned 50/50 with water shades the muscles. I then do a goblin green dry brushed highlight. For metal it's boltgun metal drybrushed over black. For leather boots, belts, gloves etc it's various browns and yellows with a flesh wash.
Trousers are all blood red for cohesion across the army, the "jackets" I then paint a range of blues, purples and browns. I have a lot of orks! Pics are what I had on my gallery but give an idea of how it all looks:

Vehicles I use blood red (goes faster!) with ice blue dags. My Waaagh is the Da Ammerz and is based on West Ham Supporters : )

If i remember correctly.
Basecoat Black
"Orkhide Shade" on all ork skin.
"Knarlock Green" on everything but the crevices.
"Goblin Green" on almost all the knarlock green.

So as intended i went down to the shop today, had a game with my tau and then picked up some paints for my orks. Sadly my webcam isn't good enough to capture the model but i gotta say devlan mud over any green will work really well. I put it on my whole model with goblin green skin and it worked great. It doesn't give as much depth as models with several layers but it is good.

It also gave me the fast and good looking result that i wanted. It took me an hour to paint because of my cruddy brushes but otherwise it would have probably only taken about 30 to 40 minutes for the shoota boy.

I gotta say i am thoroughly impressed with the end result and am really looking forward to painting the rest of my...16 boyz (stormz and normal boyz). Then i will only need about 70 more done for my army xp

p.s. The wash really smells !

Now your starting to understand the joke about devlan mud being the miracle wash. Infact another step you can add (that will only take literally a few seconds each mini) is after the wash dries, do a quick highlight over the skin. Itll had a bunch more depth to the mini, but leave the layers your looking for. Its fast and simple, itll surprise ya for sure

I prefer a darker ork skin, but have not really found a method that I like enough to paint army wide yet.

Some good thoughts in this thread which I will look into.

I need to point out that if your Orkskin doesn't look exactly like everyone else's, it is a good thing. For example, you never know if you will have to fight other Orks one day. One guy I play against does Orks - his have a pale green type skin, mine have a dark Incredible-Hulk green skin. It is easy to tell them apart on the table.

I use Applebarrel Plaid paints. They aren't as good as GW, but they get the job done, and they are cheep as hell. Kinda chalky, though... But I kinda like the look it gives the skin, TBH.

I only use two colors for my ork skin:
Classic Green
Sage Green

1. Prime black.
2. Normal paint Classic Green over black. Result looks like Ork Hide.
3. Drybrush with 1:1 Classic Green/Sage Green.
4. Drybrush highlights with Sage Green.
5. Wash with 5:1 water/Classic Green. (well, I think it is 5 to 1... I use an empty 20 oz soda bottle cap half full of water, with three drops of green paint in it.)

I wish I had a picture to upload, but they are all at home. Maybe I will later tonight.

@daemon: Very nice!
