Well, I thought I'd try and write a 1000 pt vulcan list, but it's pretty tough.

The other, more esteemed posters above me have hopefully given you a taster of what works and what doesn't; both Pedro and Vulcan are extremely good, but I always take a chaplain or a librarian at 1000pts. But, that's me...

So, if you want Vulcan, you got him;

He'stan 190pts (to join one of the combat squads)

Next, you'll need some troop choices. At this level, two tac squads is enough. Give one a multimelta and a melta gun; to make use of He'stans special rules, and give the other a missile launcher and a flamer. This will give you some range and the missile launcher is pretty versatile. Also, they'll need transports. Rhino's or Razorbacks are good. Below I've taken a one of each, so I can combat squad one of the Tacs;

1 x Tac squad; Missile launcher, flamer, vanilla sarge, Razorback - 210 pts (Vulcan rides up front with the sarge and flamer. Missile launcher squad sit on home objective.)

1 x Tac squad; Multimelta, melta gun, vanilla sarge, Rhino - 215pts

Next up elites. This is where it gets tricky, and we all have different opinions on what works well and what doesn't etc. ad infinitum. So with your vulcan build in mind, I might try this;

2 x dreadnoughts in drop pods. DCCW's, stormbolters and multimeltas.
- 280pts

Big and scary, tank popping, tar pitting, and something for your opponents to think about!

Finally, here are four options to round it off with;
You could add a Vindicator - 110 pts (1000pts total)

Or, if you prefer, a Dakka Predator (Autocannon + Heavy bolter sponsons) and a powerfist for the Sarge in the combat squad -110pts (1000pts total)

Or if you want some fast attack, throw in a couple of land speeders. (And stick a Multimelta on one.) -110 pts (1000pts total)

Finally, you could upgrade the other Rhino to a Razorback, give a sarge some melta-bombs and add in a Thunderfire cannon. (Make sure to deploy it in cover though!) - 110pts (1000pts total)

The good thing is, you could upgrade this to 1500pts easily by adding in a unit of Thunder hammer/Storm shield terminators and a Land Raider. (Although, I would also want a third tac squad @1500pts - but that's something for you to worry about!)

So, just my opinion based on what you wanted. Mech Space Marines + Vulcan @1000pts. But really, it's up to you how you want to play them!

so now the question is

will my list survive in a semi-casual gaming enviroment

Will it survive? Ehh... maybe.. the better question is it competitive, I don't think so. Like I said before I don't think the footslogging Terminators are a great idea. With the amount of mechanization these days it's gunna be turn 3 or even 4 before they even get into combat, if at all. Not worth the 20% of your total points to do nothing. Same with Vulcan while a great model he's just to much of a point sink to create an effective Salamanders list at 1000 points.

I'd say your being overly harsh I think his list would do well in any non-tournament setting, but it is far from optimised I agree. I also agree with each of your points here.

Use General_Chaos' list on page 1 with the Landspeeders. The speeders give you some hitting power the Tacs take objectives and give you bodies and the Chaplain makes the assault squad almost half passable.

The problem with Assault Squads is that they are no better in assault than a Grey Hunters or Chaos marine squad and those are just the Tac squads for their corresponding armies! Against any other assault unit point for point your Assault Marines are in real trouble.

With the Chaplain and getting the charge they have a chance but you will have to be careful with them and use them as a counter assault unit rather than a full on charge forward assault unit so keep them behind you main line until they are ready to strike.

However against Tau or IG you can just send them forward as they'll dice either armies very easily. However do watch for a counter assault from Kroot with Hounds as a large unit can put you in trouble if they get the charge, often the best idea is to charge the krrot first if you possibly can. I know how tempting the firewarriors and battlesuits can be but charge the Kroot and he'll have no counter strike to your assaults and then your Tac marines should actually be able to deal with his suits and FWs pretty easily...

Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.

Yes my Colour is Black but not for the reasons stated mainly just because it's slimming... http://imperiusdominatus.blogspot.com

From what i know.. Vulkan is awesome when he is with thunderhammer terminators in a landraider. which in a 1000pts army is too much. the TH/SS ternibators in LRR /w MM are still a tough cookie without vulkan so maybe you can take that with 2 tacts with flamer , MM?ML?, in rhinos and a terminator librarian or something instead. I think it can still do well. Not much of mobility and lack number of models but you have a LR redeemer to power through and hopefully not get popped for being the biggest single target in da army.

i feel assault termies don really do much without the LRs and that LRs are just a reallly huge target.. in bigger games usually have 2 of them to soak up the damage which would lighten the burden on them.

Just feels good to have something that wont die easily in a space marine army...
