China has the second largest GDP on Earth - it isn't a poor country.
And we see people like Jamaican Usain Bolt and African runners clean up in the most basic of sports like Run Real, Real Fast, Jump Pretty High and Throw Stuff Far.
Sure there's BS like Sail Your Very Expensive Boat and Ride the Horsie but at least there are some real sports that real people can play without tons of expensive gear.
You don't think there's vast amounts of resources put into getting guys to run real fast and throw stuff far? There is a lot of much money spent on bio-mechanics and the like - the bit where the guy runs 100 metres really fast has thousands of hours from dozens of specialists behind it.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

me neither but who know what goes through KK's head at times.... its probably best we don't ever find out...
There's at least 4.
The International Olympic Committee has the Summer Olympics, the Para Olympics (athletes with physical disabilities, same year and city as Summer games), the Winter Olymics (used to be same year as Summer, now 2 years after) and the Winter Olympics.
There's also the Special Olympics (athletes with developmental disabilities) but it's a seperate organization that has the right to use the Olympic name.

YOu've not spoken to the Red Chinese lately, China is a very, very poor country that's why they can't cap carbon emissions, or have democracy, or stop piracy or...
And for the record they are #3 in GDP.

It may not be everybody's cup of tea, but the Curling and of course the ICE HOCKEY make the Winter Olympics at least slightly awesome for two events.
Rooting for Russia in the hockey because of Ovechkin (Unless GBR has a qualified team...)

The Para Olympics and the Special Olympics are different things? I had no idea, cheers for that.

Only if you convert GDP by nominal exchange rate, and not purchasing power. Either way, China has a lot of poverty but it also has tremendous resources on hand for national projects like developing Olympic talent.

Actually I think the #3 ranking is by PPP not exchange rate. By exchange rate the PRC would be much lower.
