Hi Reecius,

I've come up with something that I think would actually make your list/army better (and cooler, too!)

You have this listed above:

Noble: Wildrider Kindred, Great Stag, Dawn Spear
Wild Riders x5: Full Command, War Banner

Why not give the noble the Moonstone of the Hidden Ways instead of the Dawn Spear? Same points cost, but now that whole unit of wild riders + noble can disappear and reappear in a forest behind / to the flank of the enemy. Talk about one nasty suprise tactic

What do you think? Have you thought of / tried this yet? I was thinking it through for my own list (trying to make one under 2000 points... so no Treeman Ancient) and am very tempted by this very same noble.

Edit: Also, I was thinking of putting up the questions in the Fantasy YMDC section... but I don't think a Treeman can use the strangleroot attack as a stand and shoot response. In that entry in the main rulebook it specifically says missile weapons... and says it several times... so I don't think that attack qualifies :-/. Unless this was addressed in the FAQ...

Edit2!: One last question... I know you said your gaming group doesn't tend to run them, but what are your plans to counter a really nasty monster? The same goes for a really hard/tough unit I guess; although you might be able to use avoidance for that.

@Golga
Damn, I'll pass on that! I would just get a generic Dragon or the High Elf version and put a wildrider lord on him.

@RiTides
I have looked at that magic item but it seems a little too random. The way we place terrain here is to roll for it, each person can place up to three pieces, but which piece that is is random, so it may not end up being a wood. If I could chose a wood, that would be awesome and that item would be really great. The dawnspear is cool because it makes the squad tougher to kill. I use the killing blow spear too if I know I am going up against knights and that thing is pretty fantastic.

As for the Treeman using his strangleroot for stand and shoot, it says it is a shooting attack, and the guys in my group here who play Fantasy all the time have told me that you can stand and shoot with it, I have not read the FAQ, so it is possible I am playing it wrong, but I don't think so.

As for nasty monsters, the Alter kindred can usually either kill them or do enough damage to allow me to kill them with shooting. His hail of doom arrow and boat load of strength 6 attacks usually means he wastes monsters. In my last game he killed a Slanesh giant pretty easily. With HoDA he averages 9 strength 4 magical hits, and then when he charges he does a lot of damage too. If that looks like it won't work, then I can always use the wild riders too, although they have a tougher time of it. So far I have not met a monster I have not killed, Hydras, Giants, Stgadons, etc. I have not though, faced a list with 2 of those yet, only a stegadon heavy list in a tournament, which did beat me. That was when I had just started playing though, so I still didn;t know what I was doing yet.

That just goes to show my relative inexperience with Fantasy. I never see Dragons around here, but maybe that is just our meta. All the DE lists I see are Hydra lists, they are just too good for their points to ignore.

Some of the most competitive Dark Elves lists field 2 War Hydra's and a Black Dragon!

@RiTides

Yes, you can use the Strangleroot Attack of a Treeman as a Stand and Shoot reaction.

Okay, good to know! Also, Reecius I was thinking of big mounted monsters... like a dragon. From looking at the book, I thought the only way we could handle that would be a character / treeman with Annoyance of Nettlings? Otherwise... breakfast for the dragon...

Yeah, a treeman with annoyance of nettlings would work well, I imagine, but as I said, I never see Dragons here. I have yet to play against one, so I don't honestly know.

And two Hydras and a Dragon? Yeah, that would be a serious PITA.

It is kind of lame how the game revolves around rare choices for most armies now. I think the game is a lot more fun and more visually appealing with more blocks of infantry, but that is just me.

And why in the blazes are Hydras so undercosted? They're better than a treeman for 110 points less! Give me a break!

True!

Unfortunately all you need is a match to take on a treeman. And hydras have a big one.

Seems like a lot of extra work for that WE dragon from the HE one. I'd probably just paint the armor bronze and paint the dragon green and stick a different rider on it.

Yours would probably look better though.

Damn!

Oh well, I have two treemen, they are just over costed now, and mine rarely do anything all that hot.

I would probably take another unit of Wildriders and more Core, really. Those have been my best units.

Wow, 2999... that's going to be even harder to reach than 1999! But at least you won't have to worry about facing TWO dragons...

I put the Moonstone of the Hidden Path on a wardancer noble and in the game I was able to use it, it was awsome. In the other rounds of the tournament, the only wood piece of terrain placed was mine. If you can control the terrain, it's great. If not, leave it at home.

Good point... but don't most tournaments have woods on every table? The boards at the Bunker near here do, as well as the other local GW shops. Those are the only places I'm able to play at the moment, so that's really all I know... but I would think hills, woods, followed by perhaps rock formations / other obstructions to LOS, would be the most common types of terrain.
