Excellent work Aduro, this is all looking beautiful so far.

The soul trail on the Skarlock Thrall is epic, now that's just heated and stretched green sprue? I don't see a kink or a fingerprint anywhere, it looks fantastic.

Yep, heated and bent. It's really easy to not have fingerprints in the plastic, as you can just reheat it slightly and the fingerprint will smooth itself out. I've never had a problem with kinks either, I'll guess it's the nature of the plastic to not want to bend at sharper angles like that. The thing to be careful of is not overheating the plastic, or it will contract and you'll have a shorter/thicker piece.

Slayer's all painted up. I find it somewhat amusing that the more mass these things get, the less of the green plastic they have in them. I'm going to leave the chains off for now, as he's currently being used as a Slayer. They seem like they'll stay on well enough unglued thanks to all the little blades and spikes he got on his arms, so I think I'll leave them as a separate bit, putting them on when he's being used as a Seether and taking them off when he's acting as a Slayer. Otherwise the only real differences between the two figs is the head, which I've completely covered up with my own, and the Seether has a row of spikes above his head, which I've put the Necron symbol there.

Painting these is interesting, as my original Necron scheme was not meant for something quite this complicated. Bronze shoulders, chest symbol and gun blades, and that was it. These have so much more surface detail that it would look really bland to have the whole thing gold like that, so I have to make it up as I go along, putting more bronze on, but trying to not less it break down into every other part swapping color. I think overall the scheme is translating nicely though and I like it.

Still loving this, but some (hopefully) constructive criticism: I agree with you about using the contrasting bronze and gold, but it looks a bit samey/neat and tidy still. Have you considered verdigris effects to weather it up a bit? Doesn't need to be heavy, but might add a bit more depth and variation to the large, flat surfaces. For example, a swift, light drybrush of (I don't really use gw paints but) say bestial brown, whatever the equivalent of old swooping hawk turquoise is (or, for the gold, the green you've used on the pipework), and then a final light re-highlight of shining gold?

I don't do stuff like weathering and highlighting really. I don't really like painting. I do like having painted figs however, so I tend to look to quick and simple paint schemes. In the past that's meant just lots of Drybrushed stuff, though I have recently discovered dipping as my new favorite method of quick easy paint jobs that look awesome. I have way too many Necrons done for me to want to go back and change their stuff however. Plus I tend to prefer a factory fresh appearance.

Very nice conversions man. I don't really have much to add for them; they are just very sharp!

One thing you might want to do with the paint though... have you tried painting the gold metalics with chainmail/mithril highlights then using a gryphon sepia wash over them? I think it will go a long way towards smoothing out the color, as well as making some nice shading gradiants and picking out details. It is quite quick too, especially for how nice the results are.

Really nice looking force though. Those green soul bits are really slick.

These could probably benefit from some of the GW washes. They are a bit messy looking now.

Washes and highlights and shading oh my! Nah, not really my thing. Yes, I Could paint them better, I just don't like painting in general so my schemes are all about what is quick and easy and still looks good. My recent stuff is all about dipping, but my Necrons are too vast in what I've got painted that I don't want to have to go back and update it all, and the simple Drybrush really does work well on them. Not As Well on the bigger stuff like the Slayer here, but that's generally going to be the minority even in my Warmachine stuff. From here on out it's going to be more units of smaller guys, where the drybrushing works better.

Because I know it messes with the heads of a couple guys at the FLGS when I've got pictures of converted stuff up the same night I purchased it, here's some shots of a Cankerworm in progress.

On the plus side, I thought his fancy base was attached to his lower body, but it wasn't so I saved A Ton of time by not having to Dremel that thing off. There was a bit of stuff under his body where it attached to the base, but that wasn't nearly as bad to get off as it could have been.

The old head came out easy enough as well. Clipped the exposed areas off, then used a drill bit like a grinding tool to carve out the inside of the head. Drill bit's nice for that kind of application as it's more about tearing the material out rather than grinding it off, so it generates less friction and heat, which is a very good thing as such a tiny metal bit would otherwise probably involve me burning my fingers at some point. I originally was going to use a Tomb Spyder head, but Cankerworm's much smaller than I thought it would be. Destroyer head is a perfect fit however, so that works out well enough.

Those tiny mandibles... Those are going to be a problem. More so the left one, where it's got almost no contact point, the right one at least benefits from having the overhang of the eye piece above it. Let the glue fully set up overnight, and then I'll Green Stuff in some gaps around the head and add material behind the mandibles to better hold them in place tomorrow.

More work on the worm. For those of you who don't play Warmachine, that claw on his tail is called the Replicator. When Cankerworm Scavenges a wrecked Jack, he can Adapt the Replicator, copying one of the fallen Jack's weapons. Sounds like a shot for a good modular fig to me! I don't typically mess with magnets and such, as I prefer to get dynamic poses and what not built into the fig, and that's harder to do while having interchangeable parts. I don't think that's a worry here however, since this guy can't really do dynamic without pretty much rebuilding the entire thing.

I put a little pin in his tail, where the claw goes on. Drilled a hole into the claw so it'll slide on, and presto, removable Replicator. Then grabbed a couple of the extra weapons from the plastic kit I made the Slayer out of, took off part of the arms, drilled holes to slide onto the pin, and cut out the molded on rods and replaced them with the green rods. Now when he copies someone's melee weapon I can put the larger claw on the tail, and when he copies their gun I can put the gun on. I think I may dig around for a couple of Necron Wraith shoulder I know are around here somewhere, and see about making him a shield option as well.

As usual, none of the green rods are glued in yet, and will have chimney caps and a gun tip when finished. Once the Green Stuff has set, I need to pop the mandibles back off and then glue them on for a better adhesive bond than the GS alone will make. Get the whole thing sprayed black, and it's early enough he may be completely finished and painted tonight. Then I can get to work on a backlog of `Nid stuff again until I pick up my first Warmachine unit box next week.

I think the Slayer head looks odd because of the angle of the shot when you look at it from the front. He's leaning forward, and the angle put the head right at his crotch, between the undersized legs, making it look too big. The more you turn it to the side, the more in proportion with the fig the head looks.

Far aside from the awesome necron-nitude, that tail-swapping thing is a great idea. (And how come 40k doesn't have something that can copy another model's weapon? That's brilliant!)

Didn't get it done quite as early as I thought I would because I forgot the new season of Survivor premiered tonight. Watched it at my parent's house so I could record Supernatural on my own DVR, as otherwise the special two hour episode of Survivor would have kept me from seeing it. Also, woooooo for getting the left over pizza to eat tomorrow!

But yes, save for his basing and extra shield system, Canker's all done. I'll base it next Wednesday at the FLGS, as I've mentioned before that that's where my flock is because I generally only use it for making hills and stuff for the store's terrain. Plastic glue on the shield's manuvering piston needs to set overnight, then I need to GS some little caps to the tiny hydrolics, and paint er up.

Final (other than lack of flock on canker) group shot of Necron Lord Asphyxious' 15pt Twisted Metal Warband. Admit it, Canker's smaller than you thought he was. After next week I'll be adding Bane Lord Tartarus(auce) and a six pack of Bane Knights. Due to a couple ways of adding more guys to the unit plus bringing guys back from the dead (what else would you expect from Necrons?) I'm going to end up making a full dozen of the Bane Knights.

You know I love this - the only thing I'm a bit disappointed by is the basing, particularly as gaspy and the skarlock are so awesome. Even some debris would be good maybe, or some slab bases with the necron logo on (a bit like the side of a monolith, if that makes sense).

I'm thinking I Might take a stab at painting the grass, so it's browner/deader around the feet of the Jacks, and greener towards the front edge of the base.

Cool. Did something similar with Dark Sword's Melisandre model, grass singed around her then progressively more alive. That could look really good; if anything, I was a little too cautious, and think it could stand to be quite prominent. Would you seal it with PVA first?

Whoah... Yeah that Canker is a lot smaller than I thought. Very nice, Aduro.
On a side note, you could totally field this army in 40k too. You'd need warriors or a warrior-equivalent model in bulk of course...
