So I've been incredibly lazy lately, even more so than I normally am, mostly due to my poor multitasking abilities and tendency to focus on only one hobby at a time, which lately has been DnD. Having finally gotten and converted the figs for our party though I now want to get back and work on more stuff. First up is the resurrection of the Necron Cryx, since they're party of a league that scores on paint jobs and conversions and what have you, so I've got more motivation to move them to the top of the list.
Bane Knights are my addition of the month, along with Bane Lord Tartarus(auce). The knights were a simple enough concept, swap out the spikes on their back for the spine from a Necron Destroyer, and heads for Necron Warrior Heads, with one Destroyer Head to mark the unit Leader. Took the first spine off the sprue, dry fit it to the back of one of the knights to see how much I was going to have to cut to make it fit, and was quite pleasantly surprised to find that not only did the curve of the spine match the curve of the back, but the tab on the spine fit ALMOST perfectly into the slot on the back of the knight. All I had to do was shave the tip of the tab as the slot on the knights is not as deep as the slot on the destroyers, and then perfect fit.
My original plan for the heads was to attach them to the body via the spine, in the same fashion that the destroyers have their heads contacting the wire tip of the spine. The smaller body size of the knights would have had the heads hovering much too far over their shoulders however, and I didn't like it. So I messed with where I wanted them to sit, and decided the best way to attach the heads was via their chin. It keeps their head inside of the armored collars, and still gives them a floaty detached head ghost look.
Their halberds are on for now, though I may go back later and swap out the hafts for green rods. It would look cool, but it would be a HUGE pain in the arse to have to do it to a full dozen knights, as to get the proper length it requires two rods to be joined together, making the halberd four pieces, not counting the arm that holds it. What would be a FAR easier way to get the "green" on these guys would be to put a half length piece of rod on the back of the head of the halberd, where the four little spikes are. Or I could just decide that basic grunt units don't deserve that kind of extra work, and save the green to mark out the cool guys, the warcasters, jacks, solos and other named guys.
edit: Woo for the resurrection of the thread starting out a brand new page!

Hey, glad to see there's more to come. I like the idea of attaching the heads to the spines, and I think it's still possible. Instead of attaching the spine tip to the back of the head flat, you could greenstuff a bit of extra length and curve the new tip to be angled, so that you can attach it closer to the top of the head, like this picture demonstrates:

Finished up a full dozen of the Bane Knights. I ended up only having 11 of the Destroyer spines. It's a bit that would normally always get used, so none of my friends had any extra either. I found an extra set of metal Destroyer Lord bitz, but initially dismissed it because the spine in that doesn't match the rest. As I was setting up for a game at the FLGS and someone asked me if I had one marked different for the Unit Leader. I pointed out the guy with the unique head, and had the epiphany that "Duh, one of them doesn't Have to completely match and is supposed to be marginally different!" When I got home I took the plastic spine off him, put it on the grunt who was missing one, and then gave the leader one of the metal spines. I also went thru and cut off the little wires at the top ends of the plastic spines, since they weren't connecting to anything, and drilled out a small hole to match the hole at the end of the leader's spine.
I've also got Bane Lord Tartarus(uace) finished up I do believe. I liked someone's (i'm too lazy to look back thru the thread to get the name) earlier suggestion of making him to look like the Night Lord. Drilled out the spot where it head should go, and sculpted in a head to match the Night Lord's. I think I did a rather good job on the face, but the hood leaves a little to be desired. I think that comes from trying to match the texture on his robe, but I don't hate it. Messed with his axe blade to instead give him a suitably wicked looking scythe. Better than the Night Lord's rather bland looking one IMHO. Not sure what else I would do with him, so as I said I believe he's finished.

OMG Tits R'Us looks great, lots of Nightbringer flavor, gonna do the flowy ripped fabric sort of stuff? Bane Knights are good too, the different heads and the direction of them make them stand out, even before paint. Very cool...and very blinged out when painted

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Don't think I'll mess with adding extra fabric to Salsa Picante, as in the Nightbringer fig it's draped off of his outstretched arms. Here his arms are more tucked up in front of his body to double hand the scythe so you would lose the effect. Plus that kind of free hanging green stuff work is just incredibly annoying to do when you have nothing to back or support it. Even the head I sculpted here I stuck a plastic rod in first to give support to the green stuff.
Another quick random thing I did the other day for a friend at the FLGS. It's not Cryx, but it is Warmachine so I figure I'll throw it in here. As he phrased it, you can't call yourself a bounty hunter unless you have yourself a cowboy hat.

And they're finished, minus the flock because I don't keep that at home. Painting a dozen Bane Knights is FAR more annoying an tedious than painting even a dozen Gaunts. They have so many annoying nooks and crannies to get into that it's just Horrid.
The Sauce doesn't lend himself as well to my color schemes as well as the others. I had origonally planned to paint his face the same color as the robe, but that just made his head look tacked on extra, so I went back and made it gold to better blend. The biggest problem is the haft of his scythe blends into his arms because of how he's hugging that thing. There's only two ways I can think of to fix it. One is to break my rules of what gets painted what color, which I'd rather not do because I tend to be a stickler for that. The second is to go back and remodel the haft to be green rod. My paint jobs are no works of art, so there's no big loss in having to fix it, and being a 4 pt Solo, he really is worthy of the "honor" of the green plastic. I originally didn't use it because the Nightbringer that he's modeled after doesn't.
Next up on the plate, a pair of Hell Divers and the Withershadow Combine.

A couple of Hell Divers with `Cron heads. One's reposed and showing off his reworked leg/ankle. When they get painted I'm going to accentuate the head to show that the lower jaw is part of it, and there's a separation from it and the body. It's there, but it's hard to see in raw metal. They'll of course get the green chimneys after painting as well.

First Machine Wraith. Gotta have at least a pair of them in my army, as they're both very fitting to the theme of appearance, and in the army's general ability to make your stuff into my stuff. Replaced the head with a warrior head, some spikes on the back with the spikes from the Wraith, and the forearms/claws with the Wraith's as well. I'm debating on if I want to put the big Wraith shoulders on it. They're kind of iconic to it's appearance, and would help hide some faults with the spike connection, but they're also a much larger Necron detail than anything else I've used yet. If I use them I might want to make them a bit more ornate to help fit into the Cryx appearances. What do you think?

And wow I'm productive tonight. Here's some Bane Thralls. Not finished, they still need their shoulders, and I think I'll see about hacking up some Necron Warrior torsos to harvest their spines. I'd do it now since I'm really in the groove here, but as I have to get up early tomorrow (as in before noon) to get my taxes done I should probably not stay up any later.

Oh god yes, use the shoulders. It's one of the most iconic and easy to recognize details of the necrons, and aside from that it looks f***ing sweet. The model looks incomplete without them.

Kicked out the Withershadow Combine tonight. I'd tried simply sculpting new, miniature Necron heads for them, but after several attempts each and not really liking the results, I did what I do better and simply modified normal heads to be smaller and fit the scale better. The chick is the least effective, given she's the smallest, but I think it worked out better and deformity more recognizable as what it's supposed to be than the ones I was making. Threw some Necron spines and chest symbols on them for added detail, and in what will be my new standard, gave the unit leader a bigger/fancier spine.
One of the first things I had done when I started working on these guys was to remove the tiny skeleton thing on the robe of one of them, because I always thought it looked rather stupid in the pictures. When I was putting the arms on them, I noticed the odd thing the one was holding in his hand. Took me a few minutes to figure out it was the controls for what had been the marionette I carved off. Annoyed with myself, I dug around, but the only thing small enough to replace the marionette with was a Scarab, which works, but I also use Scarabs as my Focus counters, so it's a bit out of place. If I decide I like it or can't find something better, I'll see about digging out my tiny wires to put strings on it.

Picked up a second box of Bane Thralls today. I've slacked off getting the first box fully finished because I figured I'd do the two of them together, same as I did the Knights. Got the heads, weapons and shoulders done on the full dozen of them, just need to get spines on their backs. I did a size up, and it's going to take about two Necron Warrior bodies per Thrall to supply the needed vertebrae. The two Unit Leaders will get Destroyer spines to mark them out.
As a nice stroke of good timing, the brand new Bane Thrall Officer and Standard came out this week so I picked those up as well. The Officer had a nice helmet that I was going to try to keep, and did a good job of hollowing out and fitting a Necron head in, but the Necron Heads on all the other Thralls are up a bit higher than the original heads, so the Officer's looked too low and inset, so I just removed the helmet and gave him a Destroyer head. He get a Destroyer Lord spine as well to further bling him up. The Standard was a cross with the circular symbol of Cryx in the center, and I thought it was perfect to make into a Necron symbol as well. Made the cross section spikier, added the two downward angled spikes, and replaced the large spike at the top with the two smaller curving ones. Bam, the perfect standard to sum up my army of Necronized Cryx. Going to need some Green Stuff to patch up around the Officer's head and the back of the Standard where I messed with it.
Need to get the polish on these guys and a few others done, then should have everything painted before the 24th, as I'll be playing in my first Warmachine Tournament then, and I want everyone looking their best, so I should be posting pictures of the recent WIPs fully finished and painted in the coming week or two.

Withershadow Combine painted up. They're such smaller figs that the level of zoom really shows off the weakness of my painting. Works much better at the table top level.
Also included is a first attempt at making a little Marionette for Tremulus. It's removable so as to double as a token to mark who he's used his Puppet Master spell on.
Helldivers and a pair of Machine Wraiths are almost done, but it's late, and I'm tired. Getting the 14 Bane Thralls all painted up before Saturday is going to be a real Chore.

Got a first two Machine Wraiths painted up, and a third one I picked up tonight mostly built. Need to let the Green Stuff that holds the shoulders in place set overnight, then pop them off tomorrow and glue them back on, as Green Stuff doesn't really bond that well to the flat surfaces.

And as it so happens, he just got a slight makeover. As I've been working the Cryx stuff to be Necronish, the two main details I put on them are the Necron heads and spines, with the spines being an indication of rank/power as the bigger the better, and yet Gaspy ended up being a spineless leader. I popped off his original backpack, and while I was at it repositioned his arm holding the Resurrection Orb to make it a bit more cradled in front of him rather than the nonchalant off to the side as before. Retouched the paint, and he's ready to command his hordes of Undead Dudes In Skirts, albeit still in his usual spineless "lead from the rear" fashion.

Got some more progress done on these guys. Asphyxious had been having some breakage problems, mostly the head of Daemortus breaking off a couple times, but then his arm holding the Resurrection Orb broke off as well so I knew he needed some work. Pretty much completely disassembled him to rebuild him better. First thing I did was turn his arse around so it was no longer on backwards, and gave it more of the flow the fig is supposed to have. Used the arms from an Iron Lich Asphyxious to rebuild this one's. I kept the original forearms, but replaced the elbows and upper arms, and ran a wire thru the whole length and into the shoulders so they should be rather durable. Repositioned them so they've got more angle to them rather than the fairly straight pose he was in before. Rebuilt the haft for Daemortus, this time sticking brass pins between the two halves and ends of the green rods, rather than trying to grind them down to make themselves into pins to stick into the head and end cap. The result is much sturdier, but not quite as visually smooth end to end as the first one.
Next up is Death Jack. I've had this guy for a few weeks but only just finally got around to start putting him together. Originally I was coming up with all these grand super fancy ideas on stuff to do to him, but decided he doesn't really need it, and am scaling back and making it simpler so I actually get it done at some point. Bent the fingers so they hands looks more like hands than giant paws. Smoothed out the plate above his head so I can put a Necron symbol on it like I did with the Slayer. Removed, or just didn't put on, a bunch of the various spikes and blades that normally cover him. Found an old Chaos Defiler mask that I carved down a little bit, and will use as the base to sculpt a Necron head on him that's more in proportion with his body, rather than that teeny tiny one he comes with. Working on making one of the Skulls of Hate look more like a big Necron head as well, which I will then cast and mold a pair of green plastic versions to put on his shoulders. Still deciding if I want to modify his existing pipes, or replace them entirely with the same styled ones as my other `Jacks.
Lastly for tonight, I placed in a 40k tournament out of town this weekend, and they didn't really have anything I needed in stock, so I picked up a pair of Deathrippers to make me a pair of Wreck Markers out of. Gashed my hand with my knife real nice working on these. They just need some Green Stuff to work in some gashes in the ground from their deaths.

Believe I'd got a design for the Skulls of Hate that I like. Need to let it set up good, coat it in something greasy, and cover it in Green Stuff to make a mold of it. Then cast a pair out of the clear green plastic that I do so love.
The horns on Death Jack's head don't look bad, but I didn't like the idea of them on the head I'd chosen to replace it. On a lark I stuck his original head under the new one, and the horns made perfect tusks, which is also then more in like with the Cryx style than the horns were. I had to turn his head a little bit more to the right, and move it left arm a bit more to the left so they didn't get tangled up, and presto. Sculpted in the bridge of his nose and brow ridge, and covered up the holes on the side of his head. I rather like the look of the grill, and might not put the teeth in because of it, leaving the head more skull-like than full on skull.
