The confuison comes from the "fast" vehicle type. It allows the vehicle to shoot even if it has moved more than 6". People tend to assume that this applies to the transported unit as well, wich is not the case.

Played a game today, used 10 burnas in a battlewagon.
2 warbosses with nobs as troops, made an idiot mistake and lost all the nobs, assault marines routed my lootas who failed to hit anything.
So, 2 warbosses and 10 burnas against a dreadnaught, 2 tac squads, an assault squad, and a terminator squad.
The warbosses killed the termies in a valient suicide charge, and my burnas in their wagon killed both tac squads and the assault squad, winning me the game.
(Mind you the dread was killed by my ally (2v2 game) but I just kept my BW's front armor facing it and it survived no problem)
Burnas have saved my arse many times this way, as it seems most people underestimate what a massive amount of flamers can do, even against terminators.

Careful with that statement. With Furious Charge, the Burna Boyz are Initiative 3 with a 6+ armor save. If they are assaulting, you likely need a secondary unit assaulting to supoort.
The one assault it works very well against is normal Terminators (Powerfist, SB variety).

I have used them to great effect against: Guard, Tau, Nids, Orks, and Eldar. I really struggle with them against SM, Necron and Dark Eldar. SM and DE are tough because they are almost always mech, and that means my Burnas are fairly useless until I pop the transports. Necron just blast my wagons and trukks with their heavy weapons before I even get close.

Wait a second, offtopic for this. I thought that open topped vehicles allow you to move over six inches and still fire from the vehicle. It's only if the truck moves 18, ie "flat-out" from being fast that they can't shoot.

Common missunderstanding/confusion this. A Fast vehicle may move and shoot more than a non-fast vehicle, but this does not apply to units carried inside only to weapons mounted on the vehicle (so that single rokkit or h-shoota may fire...). An open topped vehicle just does not need to worry about having firepoints enough, and all shooting can be measured from any point of the hull, rather than from a fire point. And I do not at all think that is an offtopic question for a discussion on burna boys.

Afraid not! No matter what, you can't fire from a vehicle that has moved over 6"(7" with RPJ). Open-Topped just means that every embarked model can fire their weapons, assuming the vehicle didn't move too quickly.

Thank you for the clarification. I don't run vehicles as a 'nid player and haven't really gone over the vehicle stuff that often. I'll make sure I find the pg number and go over this with my regular Orc opponent.

Burnas are stinkin' awesome. If their BW is still around by turn 2, they're *extremely* likely to have a target in range for the Kentucky Fried Driveby.
One of my regular opponents uses 'em, and managed to land 75 hits on a cluster of termies whose LRC had just been smoked. Even with wound allocation shenanigans, I ended up having to roll something like 8 saves each...

Another thing to consider about burnas is how many deepstrike/drop pod armies there are, especially with Tyranids and Space Wolves. Those armies tend to get clustered together, easy pickings for the burnas.
Burnas do a couple great things for the orks because they ignore several ork weaknesses. Orks have crap ballistic skill... templates hit multiple targets every time. Orks have crap initiative and crap armor, so shooting > assault against several types of enemies. Orks can struggle against power armor when they can't overwhelm with numbers, so burna templates/charges help equalize that.
Frankly, any mechanized ork army without burnas is ignoring arguably their best unit. They aren't worth in footsloggers or gunlines, but a battlewagon full of them can pay for themselves most games, and often spectacularly.

I think this is one of the instances where DOW made the game better. I really think Burnas should be an upgrade for regular boys, that would make them way more versatile IMHO.

The old Codex allowed you to take burnas in regular Boyz mobs. Burnas also rolled 2d6 for armor penetration. I WANT THOSE RULES BACK.
I'd be willing to pay 20 points a pop if I could take a couple of 2d6 AP burnas in Boyz mobs.

I agree. Thats one of the very few things from the 3rd edition codex that I thought was better. Being able to take a couple (even just one) boy with a burna with that option would just be the tits

If you want to trash vehicles, get Tankbustas. They have Tankbustas Bombs as default equipment, which are basically Krak Grenades that roll 2D6 for penetration. Tankhammer and Power Klaws are nice, but you don't need them when you have the equivalent of two Daemon Princes beating on a vehicle.
