lonewolfdevel wrote:I have a quick update for those of you interested in the situation that unfolded earlier this week between Lone Wolf Development and Privateer Press. In short, it turns out I used an incorrect word in a very critical way, which dramatically changed the message to something never intended. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that issue until a short while ago. A public acknowledgment of this, along with a full explanation, has now been posted on our forums, which can be found at the link below:

Thanks, Rob

Rob, you rock man! Kudos to you for coming forward with this. Your explanation makes a lot of sense to me- I was wondering why you didn't "see" what a lot of us were seeing as being offensive in your original communication to PP. Taking action on the infringement issue (people using AB in the name of software / applications) makes perfect sense, while addressing the improper use issue definitely would have been handled differently. I greatly appreciate your apology to the community, and will feel much better about supporting your company now (since I already do). I also hope that PP, while I supported their original reaction, will see this and decide to take a less drastic action on their forums.

Things like this make it a pleasure to do business with you . Keep up the good work!

Whatever dont listen to these haters, you had every right to send a c&d letter, PP are just being a bunch of spiteful children retaliating in such a way after trying to infringe on your ip.

My favorite thing about this is the sterling opportunity for smug bastards such as your esteemed self to get all high-and-mighty on us plebs, telling how Privateer Press are gak, how these forums are gak and how each and every person who doesn't see things your way is gak. Well tell me something, friend. Is it really worth it?

Why, yes it does

Does grinding us little people under the heel of your demagoguery make you feel powerful? Do you draw enjoyment from pointing out the hollow lies so many of your fellow posters live by? Are you, in fact, the moral Ubermensch your strutting makes you out to be?

Dude, you took the words right out of my mouth. Dang, I wish I could write as elegantly as you do. Have to run to the dictionary to look up "Ubermench" but somehow I feel it just hits the nail on the head.

Or are you just one of us? We're all in the gutter, friend. But some of us seem to think they're better just because they're on top of the pile. But you're still there, friend. Your boots might be on my face, but your shoes are still filthy.

Oh dang ... now you started to go wrong. I don't think I am better than you ... I KNOW I am better than you all.The imagery of being on top grinding you all into a pile of dirt, thereby getting my feet dirty on plebs is such delicious imagary. You are so making my day!

How's that for pretense? See, I tried really hard to write a post as obnoxious and vile as yours is, and I just couldn't do it. Because I'm a better man than you are. How about that?

Don't sell your self so short. You can do it. It wasn't a bad attempt. You have managed it so elequently in the past. Dig just a little deeper - the strata of bitterness and vileness we at Dakka have come to know from you is easily found.

2014 will be the year of zero GW purchases. Kneadite instead of GS, no paints or models. 2014 will be the year I finally make the move to military models and away from miniature games.

Looks like lots of people here still think PP has an army design tool of their own (which they don't) and that they called it Army Builder (which they didn't, obviously). I don't even know why you would think that. LWD didn't claim PP did anything of the sort, either.

I guess you didn't even read the letter, but decided to take a side anyway.

I strive for many things. Making friends with this lot has never been among them. And vile? Moi? Oh, my friend, you do spoil me. Anyhow, as I divulged in my previous utterances, I've no dog in this race. I'm not an AB customer or a Privateer sycophant. I am, if you pardon the poetry, in it for the lulz, as I understand the expression is used. I'm a troll in a two-bit suit, a bitter half-wit with a copy of Longman's and a pretentious nature.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

You sell a product that provides your customers with a mechanism to access trademarked and/or copyright protected unit names, point values, stats, and additional related information.

No, they don't. If they did, then the same could be said of Microsoft Excel. Or, hell, Microsoft Notepad. Or a piece of bark and some pigs blood. Anything you could use to transcribe the relevant details of a Codex could be viewed in the same way.

So no...

But even moreso, all this software does is represent the points costs and general rules structure around spending those points. It doesn't describe the game rules that go along with the points, which are, in many ways, the real key points of the Codex.

After all, this forum (and others like it) can be used to mine all the points values for a given Codex, given enough conversation and time.

In GW's case most of those sites sent C&D letters were illgally providing codeciies, old rules and pictures copyrighted by GW. Distributing someone else's work without permission is stealing. Some sites accepted donations so those sites, in a roundabout way, were making money off GW's IP.

So PP wasn't stealing LWD software but my point stands. LWD owed nobody an apology. The gist of the letter was that they wanted mods at PP to filter out any reference to Army Builder when not mentioned by name. PP threw a tantrum and pulled/filtered EVERY reference to Army Builder, even when used properly to talk about the program itself.

That is asshattery and douchebaggery to the fullest and LWD had no reason, IMO, to apologize. Obviously the developer felt the need to but it wasn't required. PP pulled the dick move, not LWD.

--The whole concept of government granted and government regulated 'permits' and the accompanying government mandate for government approved firearms 'training' prior to being blessed by government with the privilege to carry arms in a government approved and regulated manner, flies directly in the face of the fundamental right to keep and bear arms.
