If I were Kevin, and I had put on at least 100 lbs of pure fat, I wouldn't exactly be trumpeting it for all to see. It's not exactly the kind of thing that anyone would be proud to share with the public at large.

It's pretty sad, really. I think if he could just get back down under 300, he'd be much healthier-looking.

I think the point was that he was saying that he was booted off the plane, even though he wasn't too fat to fit in the seat. And if they thought he was too fat to fly, he should have been told before he got on the plane and into his seat and had to do the walk of shame back into the terminal.

That's his side of the story, anyway. His podcast is fantastic.

@MR: It doesn't matter. The Captain is the law on a plane.

And really, if he were obviously not too fat, then he wouldn't have been booted, would he?

But since you've listened to the podcast, does he admit his waist size and current weight?

My dad once flew on, I think, American Airlines, where they have assigned seating numbers and such. He weighs about 215 lbs, but he's 6'6", so he's not too wide.

Dad got the middle seat between two big fat fatties. They were so big that he could literally NOT SIT DOWN in his own seat. The plane was completely full, so he couldn't take another seat. He had to stand for the whole trip.

My mom flew on that same airline a few months later. She got a window seat next to someone who must have been just enormous. My mom's 5'3" and not remotely overweight.

She had such little space in her seat that she had to squeeze up against the wall of the plane, curving her neck along the curvature of said wall. It was physically impossible for her to squeeze past the hulking creature to get into the aisle, and too much effort for the beast to get up, so she had to stay "seated" for the whole flight.

She suffered permanent damage from being in that position for several hours and had to get physical therapy to fix the problem.

They don't fly American Airlines anymore.

Oh yeah, he admits it.

But he had flown to San Francisco on Southwest a few days before, and it hadn't been a problem then. They let him on the plane, and then decided to boot him. That's where the problem came from. He was also talking about some other dude, fatter than him that got to stay on the plane that was begging Kevin with his eyes not to rat him out...

John and fullhead, why don´t you read the news piece first before commenting? Kevin Smith says that he bought 2 tickets for a later plane but was put on a standby list for a single seat on an earlier flight. Yes Kevin Smith is fat, disgusting, needs two seats and whatever but the point was not that but rather that Southwest screwed up with the seating.

He was already paying extra for being fat and it´s Southwest fault as the ground crew allowed Mr Smith to get on the plane knowing (because that was supposed to be written in his reservation) that he needed two seats. T

If you are going to improvise on the spot do it right or just follow the procedure and tell Mr Smith or any other fat passenger "Sorry there are not enough seats available on this flight"

M.

Personally, all fat people should be weighed at security and then bill them an over weight amount as if the suitcase weighed too much. Why should I pay as much as some fat bastard that weighs twice as much as I do because they have zero self contol. That is not always the case... *Edited to be less rude*

Some people have medical conditions, such as hypoglycemia resulting from taking medications to help counter the effects of years of chemotherapy and radiation, like my late Mother.
The truth is there is a lot of possible factors:

medicinenet.com wrote:* Genetics. A person is more likely to develop obesity if one or both parents are obese. Genetics also affect hormones involved in fat regulation. For example, one genetic cause of obesity is leptin deficiency. Leptin is a hormone produced in fat cells, and also in the placenta. Leptin controls weight by signaling the brain to eat less when body fat stores are too high. If, for some reason the body cannot produce enough leptin, or leptin cannot signal the brain to eat less, this control is lost, and obesity occurs. The role of leptin replacement as a treatment for obesity is currently being explored.

* Overeating. Overeating leads to weight gain, especially if the diet is high in fat. Foods high in fat or sugar (for example, fast food, fried food, and sweets) have high energy density (foods that have a lot of calories in a small amount of food). Epidemiologic studies have shown that diets high in fat contribute to weight gain.

* A diet high in simple carbohydrates. The role of carbohydrates in weight gain is not clear. Carbohydrates increase blood glucose levels, which in turn stimulate insulin release by the pancreas, and insulin promotes the growth of fat tissue and can cause weight gain. Some scientists believe that simple carbohydrates (sugars, fructose, desserts, soft drinks, beer, wine, etc.) contribute to weight gain because they are more rapidly absorbed into the blood-stream than complex carbohydrates (pasta, brown rice, grains, vegetables, raw fruits, etc.) and thus cause a more pronounced insulin release after meals than complex carbohydrates. This higher insulin release, some scientists believe, contributes to weight gain.

* Frequency of eating. The relationship between frequency of eating (how often you eat) and weight is somewhat controversial. There are many reports of overweight people eating less often than people with normal weight. Scientists have observed that people who eat small meals four or five times daily, have lower cholesterol levels and lower and/or more stable blood sugar levels than people who eat less frequently (two or three large meals daily). One possible explanation is that small frequent meals produce stable insulin levels, whereas large meals cause large spikes of insulin after meals.

* Slow metabolism. Women have less muscle than men. Muscle burns (metabolizes) more calories than other tissue (which includes fat). As a result, women have a slower metabolism than men, and hence, have a tendency to put on more weight than men, and weight loss is more difficult for women. As we age, we tend to lose muscle and our metabolism slows; therefore, we tend to gain weight as we get older particularly if we do not reduce our daily caloric intake.

* Physical inactivity. Sedentary people burn fewer calories than people who are active. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) showed that physical inactivity was strongly correlated with weight gain in both sexes.

* Medications. Medications associated with weight gain include certain antidepressants (medications used in treating depression), anti-convulsants [medications used in controlling seizures such as carbamazepine (Tegretol, Tegretol XR , Equetro, Carbatrol) and valproate], diabetes medications (medications used in lowering blood sugar such as insulin, sulfonylureas and thiazolidinediones), certain hormones such as oral contraceptives and most corticosteroids such as Prednisone. Weight gain may also be seen with some high blood pressure medications and antihistamines.

* Psychological factors. For some people, emotions influence eating habits. Many people eat excessively in response to emotions such as boredom, sadness, stress or anger. While most overweight people have no more psychological disturbances than normal weight people, about 30 percent of the people who seek treatment for serious weight problems have difficulties with binge eating.

Frankly, anyone who has had knee problems can sympathize (if I can type that word, gak!!!). When I was young back in the Devonian period, working out etc was a nonissue. When the knees went bad, keeping the weight became much more of a problem. Further airline seats are so small now a normal fit human has problems. Someone who's NOT obese but larger due to genetics, athletics etc. is going to cause similar problems as one of those "fat bastards!"

Having said that I dread the large guy coming down the aisle. I know he's always coming to sit next to me.

Keep in mind that most weight problems in the US are due to overeating about 100 calories a day. Some people do binge eat, but a lot of people eat a little too much every day. 100 calories a day translates into about 1 pound a month (3600 calories per pound).

And eating is something you have to do, so going 100 calories over a day isn't that hard (if you assume 2,000 calories per day is the norm, that is a 5% error).

Unlike say, cocaine, which you don't ever have to do (unless you are Doom Rider). Do you view someone who has a coke addiction differently than oxycotton? What is the oxy-addict got hooked after a serious car accident that required 23 surgeries? What if the coke addict developed a habit because they were doing oxy and got into something else?

Nothing exists in a vacumn.

And back when I was in college, I had a 34-inch waist. I barely fit in the airline seats because I did have arms and shoulders like a linebacker (I wore like a size 48 coat, and the arms were snug). Ah, back when I ran 25-30 miles a week and lifted weights 5 days a week........

QFT Necros and Frazzled. That is the reason why I haven't been hanging out in the OT as much lately.

A while ago my daughter asked me why I kept yelling at the computer. Then she asked me if I wanted to have a tea party instead of yelling at the computer. I chose the tea party.
That was when I went back to Painting and Modeling (the main reason I was here on Dakka in the first place...), only popping my head in the OT from time to time.

Too much trolling about politics, religion, obesity, etc. And I am not the type of person to tolerate intolerance (ironic, non?)
My world view must be so greatly different from others here in Dakka, I am always trolled. Always. Then I troll back. Hard.

That is what I thought about while I was sipping my imaginary tea. That is why I am not here as much. That is also why I have been a happier, more tolerable person.

Suck it, TFG!

But the fact is that you jumped the gun talking about how fat Kevin Smith is and how he is the only one to blame for not being able to fly in one seat when as per the news piece posted he actually bought two tickets and yet the airline put him on the standby list of an earlier flight.

I'm 6', nearly 200#. That's a fair amount larger than the average person. I have no problem sitting in an airline seat. If I muscle up to 200+, I still won't have a problem sitting in an airline seat, because I'd actually be tighter (muscle is denser than fat).

1. I'd bet big bucks you've never had knee problems boyo.
2. The seats have absolutely gotten smaller. Earlier in my banking career I handled several airlines. Seat # and seat utilization is a factor. The explained in detailed how if you reduce a seat by X you get Y number of additional seats.

yes seats have gotten smaller, an inch here, and inch there. smaller seats = more seats = more money = happy CEOs. I work for a vacation company and the folks in the air dept are always receiving complaints about cramped planes and since 99.999999999% of our customers are old people, they all complain about how it's not like the good ole days when they were able to fly with fine china and buoy knives.

Do you know what the real crock is? You forgot to quote the sentence before that:
tblock1984 wrote:Some people have medical conditions, such as hypoglycemia resulting from taking medications to help counter the effects of years of chemotherapy and radiation, like my late Mother.
The truth is there is a lot of possible factors:

Way to disrespect my dead mother. Some people say if I don't want to get offended, I should leave my family, especially my mom, out of posts here.
I say that is fething stupid, and people should READ THE FETHING RULES AND BE POLITE!!!

I have issues with your callous viewpoint. It is a very unhealthy point of view, especially for the fat people you are antagonizing in your post.
It creates feelings of worthlessness, echoes the marketing and advertising featuring insanely thin models, and amplifies preexisting self loathing.
This does not get one motivated to make a substantial life change. Instead of hearing, "Yes, you can do it!" they hear, "You are disgusting, and should be ashamed of yourself."

So, my esteemed online colleague, what happens when a fat chick finds her weight disgusting, and tries to loose weight?
What happens to her self esteem when she tries and tries, and only a few pounds are lost?
What happens when you flip your equation, and she starts eating less and exercising more?
What happens when she gets woozy and passes out in a drug store because of this?
What should she think when she comes to and people are gawking and saying under their breath:
"OMG, do you see how fat she is?" "She should really loose some weight if she wants to be healthy." "She is so fat, she can't even walk!"

I will tell you what happens:
Her husband tells that he loves her no matter what.
He worries about her when he is at work, wondering if she has eaten anything.
He tells her she needs to eat something, anything, if she wants to be able to keep up with two little girls.
When she passes out in the drug store, he drops everything and catches her, regardless of her weight.
When she came to, he helps her up, and it takes every ounce of will power he has not to punch the stupid fethers in their fething faces for talking gak about my wife!

The world is not as black and white as you, or any one in this forum, or the world for that matter, thinks it is.
We can express our opinions, and share our experiences, and hope we made an impact on people.

The simple fact of the matter is that anything you post on the internet could potentially piss someone off. Take this into account when you post please. Here is an example:
I think the Eldar suck, and I have no idea why anyone plays them. That is a true statement of opinion. It is not false.
But Wrexasaur might find this offensive because he does play Eldar. Regardless of the validity of my statement, I dissed Wrex's army, and may or may not have made him upset.

@JohnHwangDD: You just did that with fat people.
