Soooo glad i am not on shadowbrands list cause i would hate to think i was pillaged or even worse raped and not know it! Back OT i dont deny friend requests usually but have on occasion due to me not knowing where the heck they have talked responded to me on here.
Usually people add me for some painting and or funny conversations most come from me assaulting the intro board with my welcomes.
One last thing @ Emp. Faithful i got some more kudos points to redeem if you want them!

I just wish to express that, although I am on Shadows friend list, I have never been, nor ever plan on being, raped by anyone. Viking or otherwise.

Generally it's only the people I know OUTSIDE of dakka.

When I was on Facebook, my friends were only people I actually knew.

Right so apologies in advance for this minor bit of thread necromancy but I think this is a pretty important subject that merits further discussion and examples--and should probably even garner the attention of the powers that be. Any site like Dakka will thrive not only because of the quality of its content (contrary to what some believe--see the most recent "dakka was better before you got here" style old timers' thread) but also because of the strength of its community. That's why Off Topic is at least as important a board as YMDC.

So I have a couple of categories:

(1) The Dove and Olive Branch: This is big one for me. It basically involves getting into a fight with someone because of some perceived slight or (not least of all) because I've been rather too snotty. But I'm actually eager to work things out rather than just earning my XP for the next level of internet tough guy. When the other party is similarly willing, a reconciliation or even meeting of the minds occurs and I like to memorialize it with a friend add. This is why I added Ketara, IIRC, although I don't remember the disagreement. It's also why I added Albatross, who I was previously counter-trolling because I thought he was trolling us Americans. We had a little bonding moment regarding his excellent taste in music and I've since found him to be a highly intelligent and witty sort of chap. In fact, most of my Dove and Olive Branch adds have turned out similarly. Ketara is another good example. The friend add wasn't just a stamp of peace on our one disagreement but has turned out to be very fortuitous for me because I think he's also a very valuable and thoughtful member of this community. One of my earliest adds, Doctor Thunder, was also of this sort. I originally thought of him as yet another femarine charlatan but when I finally got over that and coaxed him into sharing his deeper thoughts on the matter, we managed to do some productive fluff writing and even fiction writing together. DarkLordSeanron, Arctik_Firangi, Frazzled, and many other excellent dakkites fall into this category of my adds.

(2) Sharing the Trenches: Sometimes I add someone because I've found myself "fighting on the same side," either in a particularly grueling discussion or in a forum game or even supporting their fiction. I've added awesome members like Lord-Loss, Valhallan42nd, Darkhound, Gwar!, chaplaingrabthar, Kid_Kyoto and other for this reason. Again, it's been fortuitous for me given that these guys are great contributors on other parts of the site that I might rarely visit. Keeping up with them and their insightful posts has made my experience of the whole site better.

(3) Sheer Admiration: Another large category. Sometimes, I don't meet someone by fighting with them or against them but just by seeing their extensive contributions or because they've taken the time to help me. Just Dave, J.Black, Redbeard, LunaHound, Kilkrazy, JohnHwangDD and most recently Mellon are all examples of this sort of add. Orkeosaurus is a particularly shining example in this category. Yet again, following their posts has been instrumental in keeping me coming back to Dakka even when my interest in 40k is waning rather than waxing.

I'm sorry for not mentioning everybody. Looking through my friends list and seeing EF, 1hadhq, BrotherStynier, Wrexasaur, Thor665, Shadowbrand, Cannerus and all the rest is very heartening. I really appreciate you guys. Even though our interaction is entirely digital, I have really come to value it highly.

The recent view friends threads feature and the highlighting in blue of friends in the "who's on now" list are amazingly good ideas, btw.

I don't have any friend in Dakka

I choose my friends because I either know them outside of Dakka, share views on non-gaming topics, and/or enjoy their hobby/gaming skills. I would add more friends, but I'm lazy.

I choose my friends from some simpel things. Beign a good fellow man/woman is the most important. Second a good musical taste and a general sense of humor is also requierd for me to befriend you and the other way around.

I don't really send friend requests-I only accept ones other people send to me. It seems the polite thing to do, though TBH I'm not sure why you'd want to be friends with me.

If you look and behave like the guy in your avatar, i think it's quite self-explanatory

On a more serious note, i really don't get what's with the "why you'd want to be friends with me" emo kind of thing. Cheer up mate, go outside, have fun, waste time on Dakka...life is beautiful. Everybody has something you could be friend with for

Oh, and about friends...well, the only one i have listed as "Friend" is Lupe, with whom i share living in the same gakky country, for the rest, well, i guess i was too shy to add

I apologise, and I don't want to waste anyone's time with my stupid ramblings. It's just that I don't have any friends IRL, and after a few people tell you that everyone hates you, its hard to not believe them. Plus, I don't see any qualities in me that could make me friend-worthy; I'm not funny, I'm not thoughtsul or able to offer great insights. I'm not smart or talented at painting or modelling, and I'm most definatly not charismatic. I'm sorry if that makes me an Emo, but thats simply how it is with me. I'll just never be of use to anyone.

You're obviously not an idiot (still failed to see one here on Dakka), you can speak, you can write, you can walk, etc. etc. You don't have to be charismatic or all the crap you mentioned there to have or to be a friend. As someone above said, it just happens (no gayness intended there)

Jealous? Of me? Huh, don't make me laugh. I have nothing that could make anyone jealous at all. This is going to sound a bit wierd, but the only people that respect me are the dead Aka-and they only do so because they're afraid.

Nach, I vary how I pick my friends. Tim friended me, so Heck, why not?

Overall though, My friends IRL are chosen at seeming random. There are
those who looking, you'd never suspect that we were friends, yet others
that if you look at'em, you'd swear we were best buds.
It's more a matter of whether I have to break it down barney style and
they still don't get it and continue on ignorantly for their amusement, or
if they honestly ask questions about a subject that I hold dear.
On here, it's much the same method of choosing and, gratefully in the
internet, there's that beautiful thing called Ignore.
