In fact, they weren't even called Imperial Guard. Back then they were the Imperial Army

Is that titan sneezing?

...I accidentally the entire ork army.

BTW, I kinda like the guys goggles.

I actually always rather like the RT-era Guard models. Sure, they're a little dated now, and the uniforms aren't too stylish by today's military standards... but for uniforms for a Science Fantasy setting, they're not bad.

They give off the same vibe that the old metal Cadians did, to be honest.

Like an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation with a utilitarian(yet evil) civilization's foot troopers.

Or dare I say...Babylon 5.

Seriously though, does anyone actually miss the days of baggy pants and bug eye goggles?

Wonder how Imperial fashions will change over the next two decades...

Haha that lasgun looks even wimpier that the one Guard has now, that one looks like a pvc pipe with a handle

I think that gun is actually an advanced version of a super soaker 39,000 years into the future.

Yep. And they surf on them to, as well as magically transforming them into Razorbacks, palling around with terminators, and firing excessive amounts of (Dare I say it?) MULTILAZZORRS!!!!!

On topic, You see this was all part of the guard's cunning plan. The enemy will have fallen over from laughing so much they will be easy prey.

@ jp400: Wow, can you imagine naming each IG trooper? It's hard enough to get them all painted and looking half decent. I have to say I like the Cadian Shock Troops, they seem more military and genereic like they are supposed to be. The RT models just look out of place and in a modern sized game the uniqueness would take away from itself because they would repeat.

Question: Is Casualty their mascott? Does someone bring him along to every battle and just drop him on the field somewhere?

The current models seem much more GRIMDARK then this cartoony-tapestry-style of 40K that used to be.

40k was actually more "grim-dark" than it was now, but it's because there was stuff that countered it. For example the soldiers above look goofy, right?

Living in a hive world pretty much drives everyone crazy. I wouldn't doubt that the soldiers in the picture are homicidal maniacs.

Early 40k struck a balance.

40k now isn't very grimdark because it tries way too hard to make EVERYTHING grimdark. And when everything is grimdark, nothing is grimdark. It's just stupid.

True, consistent fluff would be nice as well. (In the game Fire Warrior, Fire Warriors mow down Marines, while in the Codex: Space Marines, they beat the Tau with the dumb stick every time.)

My particular reference is purely towards the models themselves. By looking more "serious", it is more believable that they can do such terrible things.

Actually lose the boots and they aren't that bad, just a bad drawing. You basically have baggy combat fatigues, body armor, and goggles. Beats the "Go Redskins!" helmets the Cadians currently have, and the Vostroyan fur hats-seriously. SERIOUSLY?!?!

Yeah, I don't recall if Guardians and Aspect Warriors could take land raiders, but I'm fairly sure Harlequins could.

Unhealthy Competition With Other Legions

Miraclefish wrote:If they're the Imperial Army then they're pre- or during- Heresy Era. Back then the Army was much more highly respected. Regiments like the Geno Chilliad were in existence. They weren't as modified as Astartes, of course, but they were genetically bred and altered to be tougher, bigger, braver and smarter than standard humans.

And until the very end of the Heresy, Land Raiders were in common service with all branches of the Imperium's forces, from the Army to the Arbites.

But as Horus' Traitor Legions moved towards Terra, they were all recalled and pressed into service with the Astartes Chapters, because it became clear that the final fight would be Marine v Marine - and the loyalists needed every tool at their desposal...

then why are they toting an Ollianus Pius flag? O_o

And that Titan is one of ye-olde 'beetleback' warlords. The head is below the carapace

There would be if Sci-Fi(and every other company too cheap to develop their own uniform, like the live action Gundam movie creators and the makers of one of the Space Police Power Ranger series) didn't just use the Starship Troopers costumes whenever they need "generic space trooper".
