I just figured I would pop in here to shed a little light on the "ads" that some are decrying within Army Builder.
First of all, the "ads" have been there for about EIGHT YEARS, dating back to the days of V2.x. The key difference is that they traditionally have focused on our own products - not other company's products. That being said, we've actually had ads for other stuff at various points in time, including a few new games that were launched over the years. In fact, we even had ads for DakkaDakka itself back in 2006. Yes, you read that correctly - this very website was "advertised" within
AB. Russ contacted us about some cross-promotion ideas that resulted in increased visibility for everyone, so we did it. No one said a word back then, so the complaints now come as quite a surprise.
The ads for Battlefoam are similar what we did with DakkaDakka. We're doing a cross-promotion effort to increase visibility of both products. No one is paying anyone. It's purely something that we felt would be beneficial for everyone - including the fans. The Battlefoam folks make great products, and they felt the same way about us, so some extra exposure for both products to gamers that have only heard of one of them is a net win for everyone. If there are other products in the industry that we believe are high in quality, we'll be open to cross-promotions with them as well in the future.
Since a few people may be reading more into this, allow me to clarify how the "ads" work. The "ads" only appear within the Updates mechanism. That's where they've been appearing for almost a decade. It makes sense to include them there because that's where users are looking for data files or product updates, so it's a perfect time for them to see something else they might be interested in. More importantly, the Updates mechanism is something that users only access infrequently, so it is not an invasive experience in the slightest. Compare that to the way most other products work vis-a-vis ads and it's a stark contrast.
I'll wrap up with a little bit of reassurance. We have no plans to insert ads anywhere else within the product. They've been in that one spot for almost a decade and we don't see them venturing anywhere else.
