Lost in the warp. Halp!

I've gotta be dead, and there's not a gakking thing that's changed. OUTSTANDING.

He'd finished walking the lines, inspecting each and every soldier that he was now tasked to keep an eye on. He was now chatting quietly with the regiment's officers, a gaggle of seasoned veterans that made her and her squad look like rank children trying to remember which way to point the lasgun, while she and the rest of the soldiers stood on a paved tarmac in a muster line with full kit waiting to find out what the hell was going on.

Death sure ain't much different than being alive. Rather disappointing, really.

Amusement faded from Candroth's mind and she kept an eye on the political officer as he strode forward to address everyone.

'We stand in a very unusual situation. I've looked at each and every one of you, seen the doubt and confusion in your eyes, and heard the questions left unasked burning in your mind. I wish I could help with those questions, but not even I have all the answers.

'What I can tell you is that even here, the forces of Chaos strive to undo the works of the forces of good. Even here, we must defend the citizens of the Imperium from the vile taint of an evil so strong normal men and women would stand no chance against it...

'... but you are not normal men and women.'

The Commissar's hands met behind his back, and he paced for a moment. 'Each and every one of you has been chosen for this mission. Each and every one of you has, in some way, proven themselves stronger of mind, body, and spirit than any commander could expect of you. Your actions have shown what you can do, and it is that kind of extraordinary soldier that is needed in these coming battles.'

One hand raised, waving at the air as to fend off something distasteful. 'Ignore the doubts and fears in your mind, these strange circumstances you find yourself in. Concentrate on what you see, what you hear, your comrades and your weapons. These things you can trust.

'I could stand here all day and give you every detail, every bit of minutia I know, and you still might not fully understand. Suffice it then to say that Chaos will not take this stronghold of Mankind, and that your orders will come soon enough. Dismissed!'

The Commissar stepped back to the regiment's officers. A noise grew from the ranks, of movement and muttered conversation as discipline and protocol relaxed and everyone began voicing the questions, concerns, or observations they'd been keeping to themselves until now.

From somewhere in the back came a call, a shout of declaration: 'For the Emperor!' The call was taken up by many in the regiment, a hundred or two voices repeating the old cry once before resuming conversation like nothing had happened.

The Commissar turned his head, smiled, and nodded.

He's a hardass, Candroth thought. I hate him already.

Great stuff Candroth! As for DLS, he hasn't actually posted since his earlier post in this thread. Still, that means you'll have to work extra hard to satisfy our cravings for awesome fluff! Get well soon.

Lost in the warp. Halp!

A converted aircraft hangar served as a barracks for the 642nd. Rows of cots were separated into platoons only by the makeshift dividers formed of tent poles and canvas. The mess hall and infirmary were considered well-secluded behind supply crates, munitions stores, and spare weapons. Spent fuel drums filled with combustible material provided illumination at night. The weather was warm enough there was no real need for heating.

The squad sat on their cots after setting up their platoon's 'room', all facing the sergeant giving their orders. Most kept their hands busy with inspecting and cleaning their weapons, continuing the routine as some attempt to hold onto normalcy. Voices echoed throughout the hangar-barracks, the sounds of many other sergeants speaking much the same words to their platoons.

'This planet is overrun by Chaos,' the sergeant spoke in a bland tone. He knew it was redundant to say. 'Until recently, Imperial citizens controlled a majority of the territory. Now, this place is one of the last strongholds of Mankind that exists. We're fighting to defend what little the Imperium has, and what little of its citizens remain here. Before you ask there will be no emergency civilian evac, and as far as we can determine no last-minute reinforcements. We are all we get.

'The initial plan is to retake several key areas nearby; each force that takes a position holds it until the defensive units can take over for us. From there we form a buffer, create a safe zone and slowly expand until we retake enough territory to make it safe for the remaining civilians to evac.'

'Remaining?' Tih interrupted. He fidgeted under the sergeant's irritated frown. 'Sorry, sir. But what happened to the rest of them?'

'It's all right, I was going to explain that anyway. Corruption. Taint. You don't worry about dying here, you worry about becoming a tool of Chaos. Every soldier, civilian, man, and woman that falls strengthens the enemy. There's too much gak out here and it's way too close to risk a civilian evac. They'd get caught in a heartbeat, and then we'd have even more of a situation on our hands. Keep your faith as close as your weapons, soldiers; around here, they're equally important.

'There's a force that's already clearing their way to a lake about ten klicks south of here. If they can take it, we'll have a good clear sight of anything coming from that direction. There's the ruins of a nearby town that would make a good defensive position against anything coming through the mountain pass to the northeast -- that's our mission. We'll take a small team, sweep the ruins and hold the central building until the secondary units move in and resupply us, and we'll move outward from there. Any reinforcements we can perform while we're there will make it easier on the defensive force later. Any questions?'

Vent twitched a hand. 'I've got one.' At the sergeant's nod, he continued. 'What happened to the garrison forces? Why wait so long to take back what's ours?'

The sergeant sighed. 'You weren't here yet. There wasn't enough manpower. I don't think I have to tell you what happened.' He shook his head in the following silence, everyone thinking of the implications. 'All right, people. Get prepared for half a day's travel on foot and five days in the field. We leave tomorrow at ten.' He nodded and stepped away.

Everyone looked at each other, finally possessed of a few minutes' worth of nothing pressing to do.

'Same gak, different day,' Waitout grumbled, falling back onto his cot. He covered his face with an arm and let out a rude noise. 'Lucky us.'

Sorry ... I went and ran off to Phoenix for a couple weeks, where I suffered a heretical TOTAL LACK OF INTERNET ACCESS but had personal awesomeness in spades. Just got back tonight, have many ideas, will post moar ... but

* * * * *

The squad of the 642nd slogged through knee-deep muck, water, and slime. The ruins were supposedly 'just ahead' according to the maps, but of course with the thick vegetation they couldn't see a thing past ten meters. Las rifles were unslung and led the march, occasionally being used to brush aside hanging vines or branches. What little sound could be heard was muffled, or echoed strangely between the trees and shrubs. Native life was almost nonexistent and limited to annoying gnats that tried to nibble at the exposed flesh of the squad.

'I wish someone had told us there was a frigging swamp here.'

'Doubt they knew. Word has it the terrain's been changing since the invasion.'

An annoyed click sounded through the micro-bead vox. 'Keep it down!'

Candroth remained quiet, stared ahead, and tried not to think about what horrors could be waiting for them just beyond the next tree, at the top of the hill, or hidden in the ruins. Probably hidden in the ruins, she thought. Throne knew what would be waiting there.

The thick air grew easier to breathe, the smell of muck and decaying plants dissipating. The trees grew straighter and farther apart, increasing visibility until the squad could see the faint outline of the remnants of some building ahead.

A hushed voice came across the MBV. 'Contact left, fifty meters, two unknown sources.'

She hasn't posted since her post in DLS's thread on the 22nd, there's probably something happening in RL thats more important.

I would however, love to see this story rejuvanated, if you're not too overwhelmed by the inclusion of the 642nd in DLS's BL application .

Uhuine smirked as Candroth stumbled back into the barracks, her face even more palid than usual and her voice harsh.
"Well," started Uhuine "I haven't seen you in such rough shape since your birthday... Were we REALLY hiding in the Apothicarinon, or were we off binge drinking again without the boys?" He couldn't help but laugh, but the funny stopped when Uhuine opened his eyes a brief moment before Candroths combat boot found it's mark - Uhuines nose.

ps. Glad to see you're back on your feet! Any cool fever dreams? lol
