Consider this another vote for the IKEA Detolf shelf. I don't Use it for my 40K stuff but it works great for all my F1 memorobilia. The light on the top and the glass shelves make it pretty much ideal for showing stuff off. That and they look pretty sharp to boot!

Another vote for the Detolf here. I'd prefer something where you can add or alter the heights of the shelves, but for the money you get something that is very clean and basic looking, not fussy or which doesn't let the light in. It's a heavy package to get home from the store and you definately need two people to assemble it.

For some of my painted stuff(what fits in, anyway), I've got actual displays. They're 8 shelved 2'x3'(I think) clear plastic hanging cabinets with mirrored backs. I don't know the brand(my father bought them for me back in high school when everything would fit in 2 of them, plus one for his Guard army and he got them off eBay), but I have 3 and have had them for years. The front swings down(locked with 2 pins at the tops) for loading/unloading. I'll try to get a picture. I want to find out who makes them and get a fourth in addition to the shelves I'm getting for my closet. I've never had any problems with dust with those like I do with shelves. Here ya go(with a little bit of MP Skywarp thrown in as a bonus):

My plan is to build a display board for each of my armies and have them sit atop my dresser. Then again I don't have too much stuff, just a couple of armies.

Whatever you buy or build make sure it's enclosed in some way preferably with a glass or clear plastic door so you can see the models if you're trying to show them off.
If you want to just stick them on plain ole shelves you can, but your models will get very dusty over time, especially if you're like me where you rarely play or have multiple armies and one can be shelved for a few months at a time.
I eventually just gave up on displaying stuff, instead I just keep everything stored in army transport foam trays. Keeps everything safe & sound and I can just grab and go when it's time to pack up and go play somewhere.

The Detolf appeared to be half price at Ikea today, so just £40.

I had two Detolf Ikea Cabinets when I lived in Canada for all of my finished minis. They are really great. Easy to assemble. Easy to clean. I didn't have the light going, but it is always good to have options.
