lol I hate with the million on one questions they have while you are making anything or painting I dont mind it at first but its after awhile it starts to become tedius. Thats why I love when I get anytime off in weekdays when no other schools do ,can relax and make my stuff in the shop after I have bought it.

Hi again.
Having read through most of the posts , there seems to be this general feeling the problems are down to 'the other people messing up my hobby'.
And as most of these comments are given reference to 40k or WH.
Perhaps the title of the thread should be 'if you could change one thing about GW gaming'.
Wargamers have a vast amount of chioce , type of game TEWT, SLMG,SLBM,TLBG,LASG,etc, and JUST ONE of these is TTMG.(Table Top Minatures Games.)
And of the 2000+ rules sets for TTMG covering a wide and diverse subjects, over all known periods of human history , and fictional settings.
GW sell 3 core rule sets with associated minatures and 'hobby acessories.'
And rather than tell customers HONESTLY that , other games would be far more suited to thier requirments ,they infer that thier GW core game of chioce is idealy suited to them...to sell GW product.
So the wide diversity of wargamers who would NEVER pick the same game given the wide selection available , are encoraged to play the same game , with THIER OWN ideal re-enforced by the GW staff selling product.
When GW sold a diverse range of games ,they could direct the gamer to the game that was most apropriate.
Cramming a wide and diverse buch of gamers in to just ONE limited game , is the fault of the company seling the game inapropriatley , NOT the gamers playing the game differently .(IMO.)
As an analogy who likes racing?
'There is only GW 'stock car racing'.'
No horse racing , cycle racing, touring car,Lemans 24hour,dune buggy, motor rally, desert endurance, artic endurance , HGV,F1,F3, motor cross, Motorcycle GP..etc.
Anyone that migh be intersted in any of these alternative sports are to be directed to GW 'stock car racing' to sell our GW 'stock car racing equipment' ....
Can you see how an wide and diverse the 'sport of racing' is.
And how limited the stock car sub set is.
Pushing everyone into 'stock car racing', might lead to very differtent attitudes about what 'racing is supposed to be about', clashing ...
TTFN
Lanrak.

Prices first and formost. I know several people who would play, girlfriend included, if the prices weren't so high. While I'm willing to pay to start an army for her, she's a bit of a completist. She'd eventually want to try them all. And like me with my armies, be able to max out any FOC slot with any particular choice. Which gets pricey. And for the 4-5 guys at work, I'm not willing to buy them an army, even though they enjoyed the trial games with my spares.
Secondly, I'd get rid of the painting requirement. If you like them painted, great. But it's a limiter, and I've known a few people who look at all the well painted armies and feel a bit hesitant to show up because they're embarrased at their paint job. No amount of assuring them that 1st armies are always poorly painted helps. And it's a barrier to getting into it. If people look down on you because you have the unpainted orcs from the starter set, they're not actually encouraging you to continue to come back. Personally, for the price I'm paying for the models, they should either come painted, or you can forget the painting. Yeah, it looks nice painted, I've even gotten compliments on my paint job, but it's a game, I'm here to play. I didn't get involved in it to paint, it's not what was attractive to me.
Third, have everyone learn to express their opinions as such, rather than as definitive statements, give reasons for them, and be willing to talk about them without getting defensive. "I feel that tournaments are a detriment to the hobby because it focuses on the game aspect to the detriment of the modeling and painting parts, and discourages casual friendly gaming, which I find to be more enjoyable as it's less stressfull." Sounds much more reasonable and approachable than "I'd ban tournaments." It leaves room for discussion. It's still a firm statement, but it gives reasons, and something that other people can work with, and maybe accomodate your view. Or work with you to perhaps make a tournament that you might find acceptable by adjusting how things are done, adding in some form of hard limits on what people can bring, or some such..
These three things would go a long way to making the hobby much more approachable for new people, and if you started to get a few more into it, you might be able to turn TFG around a bit, get some of the better looking, and bathed, people to show up and give it a try.

I saw pics in a White Dwarf years ago of a games day in Italy, there were two hot girls in the picture and the writer was explaining that due to the perception of 'artistry' of the gaming and painting, it didn't get the stigma we all suffer in the States or the UK.
I'd change that. I'd never want it to be mainstream but I'd have the automatic prejudices removed.

I understand you don't like the idea that GW is the only hobby, but a lot of the problems people have been stating are part of miniatures gaming as a whole.

I wish I could drink beer at a game without having to smuggle it in in a snapple bottle or 'have to run out to the car for a second, be right back....' that and chainsmoking would be legal during the other player's turn. If anything it would mask the BO smell because the whole room would just smell like the smoking section.
I think the whole 'girls should play more' is a bad idea. My girlfriend has her hobbies, like doing her hair or having me rearranging furniture, or trying on outfits, or shopping... They are just as alien to me as my hobbies are to her and I prefer it to stay that way. She's jealous enough as it is, and having to explain that "No, I'm not going to the game to flirt with chicks" every other week (like I have to explain every time I go to a bar) would be annoying. As it is, she is quite unthreatened by the smelly dorky geeks I would spend time with for my 'hobby' once in a while, so she doesn't mind it at all. It is a hobby which she will never understand. Less arguements over stupid 'chick' issues if it stays a haven for the awkward nerdy males of the world.

Being the only "gamer in the village", I'd like more opponents and more games. I've only played 3 times in the last year. Also, I'd like to see the GW here change their "500 point WFB tournaments" to at least 1000 or 1500. I hate having to use the marauder spam list, but there aren't many options for WoC at 500 points.

I would make all table top games more popular. If more people in general played these games then I could play a wider variety of games and have more fun with them.
I play 40k and fantasy because they are the most popular, I can play games with a wide variety of people.
If lord of the rings was more popular I'd play that.
If flames of war was more poular I'd play that.
etc.
Getting women into the hobby is not worth the time and effort. Im approaching the 2nd decade of gaming mark, and I can count on my fingers the number of female tabletop gamers I've met. They are usually into it because their husbands/boyfriends dragged them in.
I dont mind the stigma involved with the hobby, you just have to not devolve into geek-ery when talking to non-gamers.
When talking to table top gamers "I play 40k and WHFB"
When talking to general gamers "I play a tabletop strategy game"
When talking to dudes "I build and paint models that are used in a board game"
When talking to women I have no sexual interest in "I build and paint models"
When talking to women I DO have a sexual interest in "I'm a painter"
bit of advice for single guys; keep the conversation short and only answer questions that they ask. Don't go off on a tangent, no one really cares about toy soldiers.

I would make it so that there was a mod for Dow that allowed you to switch between the regular game and a game style that was like Vassal except with encoded rules. That way I could find a game with decent built in visuals any time, anywhere with an internet connection.
And I wouldn't have to deal the BO.

Really this becomes a larger abstract question when you look at all the 'its unpopular' or 'chicks dont dig it' stigma kind of things. The way I look at it, some people build remote control airplanes, some people putter around with old cars, some get realy good at HALO, some people go fishing... it's all just a mental occupation of time and self satisfying use of time on something completely pointless in the real world. That's why we do it. I wish the stigma didn't exist but I'm a lucky one... I got over that hump when I show off the figs I painted to my new GF and explained RIGHT OFF THE BATT that yes I do geeky things because I think its cool... and she thought I was adorable because of it. Come right out and say it... I'M A GEEK! Be proud of it, not embarrassed. Some people throw balls through hoops, some people mastered the art of ballroom dancing... none of it matters how you spend your leisure time so there should be no stigma. Some things are 'cooler' than others?? Look I've played in bands that toured the world. I've hung out at ridiculous coke filled after parties with 'groupie' types and all that stuff and the thought pervading in the back of my mind was something like "gak i just want to go home and read my battletech book". Who cares what's cool?

Nice hope, but as I see it women are opposed on two fronts trying to get into this hobby. Firstly they are not approached as equals by shop staff, they are always the tag along girlfriend or someone buying christmas presents, and they are patronised or ignored. Secondly, the gamers themselves don't treat women as equals, when a woman walks into a games store they just stand and drool or try to hit on them, or again patronise or treat them in a variety of ways that does not suggest equality.
Unlike wishing for the end of untested rulesets being released and models going OOP before you've had a chance to play them properly, this is not something wrong with what hobbists have to put up with, it's a core issue with actual people and attitudes within the hobby.
Anyway, that and what Ratbarf said about the BO. Jeeze.

A bit of respect would be nice, but not too much because if people thought wargaming was cool, then everybody would do it and there would go some of the appeal. I like being in this crazy niche world.
Aside from that, I'd like to see a slight swing back to homemade terrain. All of this plastic is starting to annoy me.

Yeah, but people making terrain still make it. It's better to have something good for those not inclined toward making terrain from scratch (I hardly count myself as being particularly productive myself) than having piles of magazines for hills and the like.
