I think what the original point was about is that the Blood Angel fluff says the following;
Tactical squads are some of the best trained and most skilled.
Then it says the assault squads are the best and most skilled.
Then it says the Devastator squads are veterans and highly skilled.
So... the book just keeps saying it's all uber-skilled and the blue marines ain't got nothin on the red marines.
-- basically a big fluff joke.
I frankly have grown rather sickened by space marine fluff in general, except for the Space Wolves so far as they're not quite as "high and mighty" as their brethren.
The rest of the marines basically have boiled down to "we're so badass that we ride flying tanks into battle, dual-wielding assault cannons, while some classic metal tune plays in the background and we kill all the aliens..."
There isn't a lot of depth or genuine struggle within the space marines. The Imperial Guard have the grittiness of normal human citizens fighting for their very homes against horrific monsters.
The Space Marines have the occasional glance at heroic stands and epic battles, but then they make some comment about the Space Marines are gods among men and are so uber that they eat molten slag for breakfast and I lose interest again.
I exaggerate, but the Space Wolves were the only current SM codex that I could actually come to grips with in terms of fluff. They actually made a point of epic and heroic stands against monsters and incalculable odds as a purely fluffy reason for the entire chapter and it works with their Norse mythos connections...
Blood Angels are space vampires...... who have hallucinations.
I'm just awaiting Black Templar and/or Dark Angels, another chapter who have a bit better fluff imho.
I've always like the Dark Angels as a matter because they actually have a serious inner conflict to write from.

Unfortunately the serious inner conflict of the dark angels is whether they should wear the white dress or the black dress.

I have a several page long essay on this subject...... oh that would be going way off topic though. :p
In general it does seem that the over hyped Space Marine fluff is alittle contradictory but we all make mistakes. (Should have picked the white one.)
So I try to make the best of it and pretend the fluff that seems to out there is simply Imperial Propaganda. Although I'm not sure I should say things like that so openly lol.

I agree with In_Theory, this type of crap is actually making me consider leaving 40k. Only thing really keeping me interested in it at the moment is the chance that WH may be released in plastic, which then I'd probably quickly try to build my army up from what it is to Apoc size
Until then I can just imagine the next Marine codex having stuff like they blow up a sun or something to stop a Hive Fleet from interrupting their fight against Chaos and Tau in which Necrons and Eldar have teamed up with the Marines. Then after the fight they kill all the Eldar and Necrons starting with their Chapter Master choking the Nightbringer and Avatar at the same time, Deciever flees but a Bolt Pistol shot from the Chapter Master makes his head explode. >_>

To date, there is a serious problem with most SM fluff, which it seems everyone has picked up on. This is the "Mary-Sue" factor. GW are hyping the Marines like no tomorrow, probably because they are the most appealing army to newcomers.

Yeah, one of the big problems with space marines always has been that their stat line doesn't live up to their fluff.
