Maybe they don't train the same way Ultramarines do? BT, for example, don't have devastators at all, but they can field one heavy weapon per Crusader Squad. Different chapter, different training regime.

Just ignore the mean posts. That's the only way I can make it through this site every day.
I understood your point
I think that once a BA Vet has progressed to such a point that they are able to control their lust for close combat, they are given a new mission of support.
They would be trained by their fellow Vets. As soon as a position opens in the DEV squad, they would fill it with another Vet. Then, while moving between war zones, they would train in the Chapter's training facilities. Remember, every Astartes ship and facility has EXTENSIVE training equipment and rooms. They can "learn" vast amounts of information through direct brain implantation, and have their decades of experience to draw from.
New recruits would not be trained for that. They may learn how to use all of the Astartes equipment, but they would not specialize in it.
Hope this helps...

Just file this under C.S. Goto area.
The fluff sucks, its lame and completely contradictory. Combined with the complete no brainers in the rules its obvious this thing is aimed at the newbs that went through the GW stores and were shown space hulk as the intro game.
Makes sense that after space hulk hits we get both the nid codex and blood angel codex in rapid succession.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

That aside, I agree with Ravenous D the fluff was probably written by C.S. Goto it's really terri-bad

The problem is the BA fluff contradicts its self by saying the Dev squads are full of vets and the strong willed men, yet in the tactical section it says that not all marines can be tactical marines and will be stuck in assault or dev squads.
Are the Devs only vets because they have been in the dev squad for so long, flunking out of the tactical tryouts year after year?
I can understand scouts going to assault as opposed to Devs like other chapters due to the Flaw, but still... tactical marine as the best of the best? Thought those where Terminators.

It does seem strange. I would have to see the codex but if it does state that TAC squad dropouts go Devastator there is a clear contradiction lol. I for one, being a Space Wolves player lol, like the idea of veteran Devastators.

 As do I.
Perhaps the brothers of the Devastator squads can hold themselves in check but only by separating themselves
from the maelstrom of close fighting (ie having long range roles), perhaps it is only the battle brothers that keep a clear head when the foe is only 10 meters away that can be trusted to take the role of devastators...? Then again, the idea of devastators being expected to avoid proximity to the enemy at all times is a little odd. (multimeltas anyone?)

It used to be this way then it got mixed around when the 5th ed codex came out for some stupid reason >_>
If I remember right the guy that wrote the 5th ed SM book also wrote the BA one so I'm honestly not surprised at the state of the BA book. Deus Ex Machina =/= good story writing.

His english is easier to follow than many who come from english speaking countries. Seriously, why do so many so called english speakers not know the difference between the words 'than' and 'then' or 'they' and 'there'?

You know what amuses me? The collossal ineptitude and shoddy pen-craft Matthew Ward upon the part of Bjorn the fell handed, and what a fell handed one he is. You see, fellow children of the one, is their or is their not a passage under the Furioso Dreadnaughts otherwise elegant description that a certain few amongst that vaunted brotherhood that bear the scars of the battle of the Emperor's palace, though as most of us are aware, the Custodians and Emperor not withstanding, Bjorn is the oldest warrior in the Imperium. True, the shell of the Dreadnaught will have been reused, but the style of writing suggests otherwise. What an unfortunate development, I shan't imagine Bjorn will bve cheerful upon hearing the news.

Ah, that is doubtful my freind. Many a time the best and brightest of this unfortunatly flawed enterprise have succumbed to the effects of aging. Or have they, for surely none who stand here could get truly inside anothers thoughts-I do not find it beyond a stretch of the imagination that it is little more than a fallancy created to incite our merciful pity upon ones such as them.

It's simple, let's make a paralell with the Space Wolves, where the novices are clad in Power Armour, given a chainsword and ordere "kill that and anything neat that!", and as they get older they turn into the equivalence of Devastators.
