Replace "Drazhar" with "Incubi in general" and you have my reasons.

I noticed this a couple of year's back, now when ever I field a newly painted unit I always do my best to get it killed early to get it out of the way.

I've seen this happen in a lot of scenarios when something new and shiny hits the table, be it a new power in an RPG, or a new model, it seems to backfire badly the first time it's used.

Now, to think about it, on the flip-side, has anyone noticed that their models shoot horribly before they have eyes/lenses/scopes painted? It's like they can't see.

Its simple: overspecialize and you breed in weakness. It's slow death.

Yeah, like in order to be respected and treated like equals of the other models, they need to be "blooded", so every new models you bring out need to either single-handedly slaughter at least 4/5ths of the opposing force or get blown up after doing minimal damage. At the end of the day, self-sacrifice and martyrdom among new recruits are more common, due to actually possible standards.

Even better, make that thing that is just meant to draw fire super cool, you'll have the results you wanted.

I think its because you dont know how to proporly "play the model" because you have to learn new things

I've found new unpainted models always die first under the famous "curse of the unpainted model."

Painted models seem to do a bit better for me.

I have found the exact opposite. It is my personal opinion the models painted in flat black base coat are harder to hit.

I had this worry with my Guard army a while back and came up with a solution.

Wait until you have 2 new models before you field them.

In my case, it was my Vendetta and also Marbo. That way, while one was guarenteed to suck and die immediately, the other one might actually act impressively.

And I was right too. Vendetta kept dying turn one, then turn 2 Marbo would arrive with his demo charge and wipe out a marine squad coming out of a wrecked rhino

I think that it’s because when you add a new unit to an existing army it’s usually something scary. Once you have all of your compulsory units and have played for a while the next unit you field is usually going to be something with a bit more punch that’s harder to kill. If you field your HQ, 2 ten man tac squads, and your shiny new predator I’m going to fling hot hell at your scary tank.

Last game I got to use my laboriously painted Canis Wolfborn for the first time. He managed to kill 20 Marines singlewolfedly. Considering he's both newly painted and Canis Wolfborn, he did pretty well with two strikes against him.

I agree with Compel about getting 2 new units before you play them.
Last game I had a new squad of Oblits and a new Land Raider. The Oblits needed to move 2'' to be able to target an infiltrating Genestealer brood around the corner, so of course they only did 1'', after which they were assaulted and slaughtered on turn 2.
The Land Raider on the other hand did spectacularly. It did help that the only unit that could actually hurt a Raider was a Zoanthrope which got his brain blasted out by the Raiders lascannons.

Seriously though, I usually try to keep myself from intentionally killing off my opponents shiny new things asap. I would want them to let me play my new models, so it seems fair to let my opponents play theirs. Until they really start annoying me of course, then they're dead.
I even reverse cheated once (in the same game I was talking about above). The guy was so happy with his new Trygon, and he rolled so terrible that I turned over a few dice when he wasn't looking just so he would kill off a few 'zerkers.
Anybody else ever do stuff like that?

I will say this about new models/newly painted ones: though they die immediately on the first game, they'll be virtually invincible compared to the rest of your army if they're among the few painted models. Case in point: I basically primed my entire army a few days before going into a game (save a few rhinos which had been primed/painted several weeks prior). First turn? Vindicator and Predator, gone to railgun fire. The rest of the game? The two painted Rhinos survive until turn 6, when they finally crap out from Fire Warriors shooting at them. And this was in a game with 8 broadsides on the field...what a crazy game.
