Here's a "wip" shot of the giant beast and a few figs from the cultist unit. I'm trying to use alot of black in the cult unit - its hard to unify with the existing models though. I think the beast is a scorn critter - it looks like there are places for tusks to attach on th head. On the other hand, I didn't think their elephant guys had six legs.

More or less finished the giant beast and rider:

The face needs a little work however, especially the eyes. Need magnification and more light I think - eyes are just hell.

The cultist unit is coming along. I've decided to swear off flesh wash for character models. It just seems to make things messy.

Thanks! Crying Heretics is what we're all about....

Here's the current status of the Cult unit:

I'd probably be about done, but I've decided to make a substitution: The following models are OUT:

Don't get me wrong, I like each one as a figure, but they don't fit in well with the unit, and rob it over an overall theme. They aren't very "warhammerish", which isn't usually a problem, but I'm going a unit that would fit in with the setting well - a cult from an imperial town, made up of pitfighters, nobles, servants, and lackies. They also don't fit the black and white theme.

So, these guys are IN:

Got to figure out how to put a "naughty woodcut" into the book. Maybe a fine point pen.

Once the Cult is done, its time to think about where to go next. Working on Dark Angels for the 'aardboyz semi finals is likely to be my next main project, but once I swing back to Beauty and the beast I have a few options:

WGF amazons - I'd have to buy them, which violates the "no new figs until the current ones are painted"

I have the models for another beastman gor unit - metal figures from MegaMinis, plus some conversions.

Genestealer Cult. This is the option I'm leaning towards. I'd like to do more with the 40K side of the project.

What do you do on a hurricane day? Line up your miniatures and look at them of course while wondering if the Oak tree is going to come through your bedroom. Fortunately for us, not much happened here - many folks got it much worse.

Anyway, here's the whole army. Very satisfying!

I did realize that my Gor units aren't really filled out. The White Herd only makes it to 20 models with the Maeads added in. The cats are at 15. I'd like to get the Herd to 30 on their own own and a full 40 Horde with the Maeads added in. From a gaming perspective the Cats should be 20, but the only way that's happening is if I use some cats I was going to use as warhounds, or some cheap Cat Warrior models come my way.

Looking at the units together, I am pleased with their colors.

You don't have the blocks of saturated color that you see in some chaos armies or Empire ones, but the various pastels work well together.

One area I'm not pleased with yet is the "vertical development" of the army as a group. Its fairly "flat", and despite my efforts I feel it doesn't have enough banners or large enough banners. I want more large monsters and banners sticking up out of the tide of skirmishers and small units.

Interesting stuff. Lots of character in this army. Don't suppose you happen to know the name of that 'weird sculpty' you used for the spawn's tail? Could be useful.

I love the creativity of this army! Although with some of the models being a little questionable, perhaps add in to the title "NSFW"?

I think you're right - the musician kind of puts it over the edge. Although, you can see much the same on the GW website. Still, I'll modify the title.

The clay is called "Cernit Number One" - and says is a "oven bake clay with a porcelin finish" very interesting to work with. I did find a thumb print later, but it is generally very smooth. Doesn't take detail, of course.

Looking at my Genestealer Cult options, I'm thinking fluff wise it will consist of a cult that has sprung up on the world of Ionia. Ionia was a feudal world, but recently it has become more important to the imperium, and a spaceport has sprung up. Tech base is still extremely limited, with iron age technology in most of the countryside. More advanced tech is slowly being imported, but the only manufacturing takes place at the spaceport. The Cult of the White Worm existed on the planet for hundreds of years as a chaotic fertility cult, but recently it was infiltrated by genestealers who arrived on a tramp frieghter. Now the cult has a new master, a genestealer patriarch, and its former masters, powerful nobles with lands around the spaceport, are uneasy allies. Now a small force from the spaceport has journeyed to the countryside to spearhead an uprising. Here's what I'm thinking for a build -

20 White Herd Beastmen, 2 Flamers, various Hybrid champ. Count as orks.
10 Huntresses - bows and a few lasguns, Hybrid champ.
10 Genestealers
6 Super stealers (count as Ymgarls)
Patriarch/Brood Lord
10 The Lost and the Damed. Add a model with a heavy stubber.
Genestealer Magii (Inquisitional Psychers) + Hybrids (Inq. Retinue, death cult assassins, etc.)
3 Bomb Trucks (Really liked the ideas of these from Codex: Insurrection).
Armored Bulldozer
2 Horse Drawn Guns (the horses will pull chariots in the fantasy battle army - too bad the galloper gun rules are gone).
Rusty Rhino.
Corrupted Battle Sister (counts as inquisitor).

From the Spaceport:
Chimera
Cult Strike Team (count as inquisitor retinue)
Cult Leader (counts as inquisitor)
10 traitor Guard veterans.

Obviously its a fun game only army, but the way things are going, a Genestealer cult list in white dwarf doesn't seem that unlikely.

Chronopia, eh? They did make some cool stuff. I've been encouraged to put the "Queen on the monster" fig on cool mini, but I want to work on it some more before doing so - its only really a basic paintjob at this point.

Did a little work this last week, though not one the 40K side. Did a fair amount of *thinking* about the 40K side, especially since really the fantasy side is almost done - just a Beastagor unit and a few monsters, characters and a chariot to go, really. Really. Oops, forgot about all the cats. Anyway...

First, I scrounged in several gamestore bargain Bins, and came up with a few more figs to complete the Maeads unit. Y ou've got a Rhackham standard bearer (griffen), A heroclicks gal, Aidiken's dark desires and queen's assassin's figures. None of them are really as cool as the first 5 Rackham figs, and it effected my enthusiasm for painting them. The Aidiken figs (apparently old Fenrylle stuff?) is pretty underwhelming. I'll probably return to the standard bearer at some point as I haven't done that mini justice yet.

They all have the "tall and skinny" scale I required, but despite my best efforts I don't think i've quite captured the barbaric look I wanted (and that the Rhackham fiannas have)

In other news, I started my Battle Standard Bearer. After several years of trying to trade my huge gorillas in roman outfits (old Hundred Kingdom figs) I decided to just try to use them. Honestly, who knew there was no market for Roman Gorilla miniatures?
Eventually he'll have horns, and I may give him a bull's face instead of a gorillas...

Finally we have Chaos War Cat unit shaping up.

Here is my first painted Hyrbid, along with the next batch of (out of focus) white beastmen. I feel the picture doesn't do him justice in this case. More beastmen hybrids on the way!

Well, another storm, another update. Here are some Hybrids. I enjoyed putting these guys together - I think I will do some more like the center one, and I'm also considering doing a few furry genestealers with horns. Fur is about the only thing I like to sculpt.

I came up with a few figs to make my Huntress unit more usable in 40K. One mega mini dancing girl converted with pistol and third genestealer arm, 2 militia from the Urban War line, one converted with bow instead of gun.

Finally I partially painted the cat unit. I want to find some well painted miniatures cats to get some ideas, as they are pretty 'Meh' at the moment.

Inks do make creating naturalistic colors easy, but you need a plan. I sort of just went at the tiger randomly, and while its 'OK' it could be better. Plus, its hard to do the head, get an effect you like, then get the same effect on the body.

So, in honor of Tanksgiving, I've put together some cult armor. I'd like do a few dedicated cult vehicles eventuallly, but in the meantime, my imperial guard are going to slip into heresy (AGAIN) and loan a few. My concept is that when the tanks come over to the cult, they drape cult banners on them to show their new allegiance. The banners can easily be removed for deception operations however. First I covered a few IG tanks with plastic wrap or cling wrap. Next time I think I will try aluminum foil, as neither one was very satisfactory. Plastic wrap didn't "cling" which made the tank more shapeless, while cling wrap has a texture which it gives to the banner drapped over it. Then I drapped tissue paper from gift wrapping soaked in a 50/50 mix of elmer's glue and water over them, let it harden, then removed it. Next I spray painted it, put on water slide tranfers and a little paint, then clear coated. Voila! Removable tank drapes/banners. I got the idea from captured t-34s which are often seen with a Nazi flag on the rear deck for identification. Next time I think I will use a heavy paper towel (without a texture) or perhaps some kind of real cloth, as the tissue paper is very fragile, and may not survive long without elaborate storage precautions.

Also painted the rest of the huntress unit, at least to a tabletop level. Boy, taking pictures is hard in the winter. I should make a light box, but its hard to justify the space it would take up.

Well, I have a work in progress shot of my BSB. I took the banner off the roman gorilla and put it on an OOP beastagor banner bearer. I think its a shame that they discontinued the metal beastagors, especially the Khornagors and Pestigors, who had great personality. Anyway, I have a ways to go with the banner. Its too bright and cartoony right now. If it was a miniature I would give it a wash, but unfortunately, I don't think it would work here... : )

Great to see these guys back. Brilliant idea for the tanks I far prefer the drapes to the welded on park railings.......

Devout Abyss Crawler, eh? Good name. I do like the skorn critters - elephants with cannons can't go wrong. If I played the game, that's what I'd have.

The drapes could be better, but I'm convinced its a great concept. Sort of like having two vehicles for the price of one, as it were.

Played a game - 3000 points of beastmen (??!! how did I get to that point?) against 2000 points of dwarves and 1000 of Ogres.

The scenario was "the watchtower". I rather liked the building rules - perhaps about the best thing in 8th edition so far. A fun scenario also.

My storming party was composed of my Gladiator (Gorebull) and the Cats (Gors with shields). The dwarves held out for three turns against them. Meanwhile, the Jabbersythe and some various light troops tried to storm one flank to get rid of the dwarf stone throwers. They ran into the Yhentis, who put paid to a chariot, several units of ungors, and the jabberslythe.

On the left my ragtag force of 60-120 point units faced off against two deathstars - Ironguts with a slaughtermaster and a horde of dwarven long beard rangers led by Joseph bugman (?!) I managed to break the Ironguts with a combined charge. The MVPs of this scrum were my Beastagors. They smashed the Ironguts, who spent their time wounding the Rider on the Beast (Ghoron) and lost on combat res.

Immediately after this picture a stone dropped on the Ghoron's head, squashing it.

To make a long story short the storming party took the tower, but because of the minatour they were frenzied. So they left the building to slaughter some dwarf miners. This was fun, but ultimately cost me the game when the 300 Ungors totally failed to live up to their inspiration, panicked and fled.

Here's a few pics of the standard bearer and also the beastagors. Really enjoyed painting them over the holdidays - they're a mix of the old Bob Oly beastmen, the metal beastagors, and some plastic conversions. I like the use of different animals - GW missed the boat going all Goats, IMHO. I think the pink and grey "corrupted nurgle" symbol is rather clever also.

Well, I've had these bearer slave guys from the hundred Kingdoms line from the begining. They're designed to carry around huge orangutan with a whip. Which seemed like an interesting model as was, but I just couldn't make it work. They were too wide to be a chaos spawn, facing the wrong way to be a chariot, and just kind of awkward. So eventually I picked up the sleeping beauty miniature and let them carry her around to put my Warbrides unit above 10. Maybe she's a "Dreaming goddess (or Daemoness?)" or something like that. The sleeping beauty fig also gave me lots of flowers to make press molds of, and I used them to help base the unit with a test scheme. I'm not too happy with it overall - I think its a bit too busy. I think I'll drop almost all the grey stones and flowers, and do a little brown drybrushing. Or grey?

For some reason, the guy on the right came out really well. I used bronzed flesh nearly dried up, with thinner, highlighted with elf flesh, and washed with ogryn flesh. For once, wet blending seemed to actually work for me.

Beastagors based, with a few reinforcements. Came out well I think. I like the new champ (an Age of Aegyptus crocadile guy with horns added)

Plus Reapers Jalinrix. Neither my paint job nor the figure itself is really all it could be - one of those things you think would be great but which doesn't really work out.

Has it really only been two months? Seems longer. Anyway, I think this project is nearing completion. All models are based. I have a few odds and ends painted, but I am waiting on making a lightbox before trying to photograph them. One last unit remains for the fantasy battle army however. I broke down and bought the Dragyari from Dark age on e-bay as Minatours (they are very large - should have put in a scale shot). Always thought they were interesting figs. Now, a quandry. What color scheme to use? Because they are big, but not covered in hair, they are perfect for working on color blending skills (mine are limited), but what colors to use for the unit? They are actually very uniform in clothing and equipment, or I would paint each one as an individual. Here they are rebased, still part painted from ebay:

Here is the standard paint scheme (not my paint job, obviously)

Normal skin tones or not? It would be interesting to try to paint them very pale, but spattered with blood...

I'd say go with something other than normal tones. Maybe a very pale blue - that would work well with some blood splatter.

I have a fair amount number of painted figures to show - wound up doing the Dragyari in a grey and pink scheme which came out fairly well I think. I'm holding off pics in order to make a light box sometime over the holidays, but soon I hope.

Now I'm wondering if should go for the kingdom death kickstarter deal. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/poots/kingdom-death-monster
I'd always wanted one or two models from Kingdom Death for this army, most notably the Flower Knight, who is just weird and cool not to include.

At the moment, it looks like I'd get quite a bit for $100 (shipping included!), even if the game turns out to be no good....

6 monsters that would be useful, including a giant flying bird thing.

40 humans of various sorts. I wasn't too interested in them, until I realized that they seemed to be multipart models with options - which would be great to have. My only concern now is scale - I've seen KD listed as both 28mm and 35mm... Many of the humans are clad in beastial armor, or have vaguely greek appearance, which would fit in well.

I've not checked out the Kingdom Death KS - mainly because I'm completely KS'd out and want to avoid temptation, but sounds like there's some useful stuff for you in there. There'll be a thread on it in the news & rumours section where you can probably get some answers as to the scale thing....

Thanks for the Tip MT - there was indeed a scale comparison in that thread. Scale isn't that big an issue, I've been mixing 25mm up to 32 mm I feel it works due to the chaotic nature of it all. Still on the fence about Kingdom Death, but I did jump into Imbrian arts and score Asura and a gnoll for $12 including shipping, which I feel will fit in very nicely.

Got the light box made and started trying to use it this morning. At first I had trouble with the light settings. This was the camera default:

Ths was what I got once I had it set to incandescent light:

Much better. Also used the super macro, and fiddled with the light balance a bit.

Very happy to have the capability to take pictures indoors now! Though I notice my bases are shedding. Still need to clearcoat this army, but I kind of don't dare after seeing some other people's clearcoat nightmares.

Great stuff here as ever really seems to gel together if your running out of Beastman units it might be worth doing what I did and adding Chaos Warrior elements to the force.

I'm more inclined to work on the 40K side than go down the chaos warrior route, at least with GW figures, though the new Mordheim type game has a great looking cultist unit coming out:

In some ways though the army should perhaps be considered done. There is no more room on the shelf dedicated to it, and I have only a handful of items on the wishlist for it. I'd like to include the Shadowforge Maeads and Sythrs in it, andl some nude male pictish fanatics, just the interest of fairness. : ) There are a couple of Kingdom Death models that would suit, and perhaps a few models from the most recent raging heroes kickstarter that would be neat, though perhaps excessively disturbing. I have two of the Reaper Zodiac models that fit in: and a couple of similar teiflings in bones. I got the bones minatours and beast men add on, but I have mixed feelings about working with bones.

Did paint a the corrupted wraith lord for the army:

I think I will get more reaper zodiacs, especially since I've found a use for their bases. I'd like two more, but which two?

I'm thinking Cancer (which I would like to paint just like this

Maybe gemini as a pair of 40K psykers, maybe taurus just for the oddity, maybe Scorpio as a thrall wizard for my Tzneetch.
