St. George is the patron saint of England, his day (which is today, 23 April) is used to celebrate our country. It's been unfashionable to celebrate it for a while (because the English are traditionally bastards, apparently! ), but it's on the increase thankfully.
It's like St. Patrick's Day, except it's not 'cool' to be English.

From an English point of view.
Anyway, we have St.Maarten(Martin for the english I guess) in The Netherlands, though I think it's mostly done in the smaller villages. We just burn huge piles of stuff once a year. No clue why, but it's fun t throw in gak that go's bang.

We have a Saint George here in America too... he stands for everything that America represents, and he loves God and liberty and freedom and likes bombing places because it makes for good TV. He also likes a good steak made out of dragon meat.
I'm both chaotic and orderly. I value my own principles, and am willing to go to extreme lengths to enforce them, often trampling on the very same principles in the process. At best, I'm heroic and principled; at worst, I'm hypocritical and disorderly.
On an interesting side note 23rd of april is when Shakespeare died.
However back on topic living in NI i was extremely lucky to be able to raise a glass of good English ale last night as my local pub had some in,
beer is not breakfast food no matter how much bacon you add

I think we should have a Great Britain Day. So that all us folks under the Jack can remember we are groovy.
I wholeheartedly agree - I would be more than happy to ditch the religious holidays we use to celebrate our respective countries, replacing them with a 'United Kingdom Day' - I feel we should be emphasising our unity, not our differences. We are a stronger nation together than apart.
