For 140 points you can't go wrong. I like the blessed weapon better than a Eviscerator. The Str is only 1 less. You can get 2nd weapon bonus and not have to go INT 1. But I do like flying nuns.

1. That inferno pistol is the biggest waste of points ever. 30 points for a single 6" S8 AP2 shot? Lame.
2. The Blessed Weapon is a two-handed weapon, so you CANNOT "get 2nd weapon bonus".

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Indeed - the Blessed Weapon is two-handed (It's just that Blessed, especially the one in my army, which has wings and rubies and bling all over the shop).

Mastercraft Inferno Pistol - yeah, it's pricey, but dammit, it works!

Or should I say - it works for me. Everyone must follow his or her own heart.

And sometimes its a really mean combo to run a Fateweaver (333 Points) next to Bloodthirster because Fateweaver lets all units within 6" re-roll failed saving throws. (EVEN HIMSELF!!)

Why would you fully upgrade a bloodthirster? I can understand blessing of the blood god and unholy might but deathstrike seems such a waste.

Also, HQs should certainly be chosen with maximum economy in mind, but HQs can add a lot utility to a force, even if they don't totally change the game (USRs, force chart modifications).

Especially for Chaos, your HQs can just be another killy unit.

its 20 points and he gets a ranged attack. This lets him attack the turn he lands. He can also attack with a STR 7 AP 2 weapon before he assaults.

Well recently here are my favorite HQs that I would use in respective codecies.

Space Marines : I would take Darnath Lysander unless you can't handle stubborn. Then I would go super cheap with a Librarian or Master of the Forge.

Space Wolves : Rune Priest, Murdercaine, and Jaws. I try to field x2 and the other one having Lightning and something else. I wouldn't take any LRs or anything high point like that, so rhinos all around, and angry wolf psykers around the map.

Chaos Space Marines: Definitely the Daemon Prince (it just screams use me) Its very debatable to use anything other than the Daemon Prince for how cheap he is.

Sister of Battle : I have yet to play them, But reading the Codex I would take Inquisitor Lord Karamazov. He has 5T, 4W, counts as a Monstrous creature, and he's got the henchmen + multimelta. He;s only 205 points and rerolls all his "to hits" in CC. It's probably only because he counts as a MC that I would use him.

Blood Angels : I don't like anything besides Librarians, or maybe a chaplain with a jump pack

The only HQs I have money invested into are my Daemon Princes, and a Rune Priest.

I run Orks and I like using 170pts for HQ in my 1500pts Army.

For 2000pts I like using 225pts.

Keeping it around 10-12% puts more boyz on the field, which is what Orks are all about.

150 points each if I'm running 2 HQs. 225 in bigger games, at 1500 or more. 200 for a single HQ, 300 in bigger games, though I don't think I can even run a 300 point HQ now that I think about it.

Quite a bit, actually, for IG, I run a CCS with an Astropath, 3 plasma guns, a medic, and a chimera.

Runs at 210 points, but damn, it's killy. It's in my 1500 list, that's about 1/7th of my army.

Well with my current SW force, I am running pretty high. I have two Wolf Lords on TW equiped with Lightning Claw and SS (and few other items to differentiate them). Combined they run me 425 or so points. I also have a naked runepriest to run around in a rhino. So that is 525 or so in HQ.

It totally depends on the army.

Some armies have expensive HQs that work as great force multipliers or are the only way to make an army possible (Pedro, Vulkan, Khan, etc) or are really what the army is based around (Eldrad/Avatar combo for example)

Sometimes it is just fun to play with more expensive HQs. I just played in a 1500 point tournament and spent 480 points on HQs (Abaddon and a Tzeentch daemon prince).

I play 2000 point tau armies with one 87 or 97 point HQ.

Well, since a DP is 130 with wings, I run my CSM HQs between 130-180ish in anything 1500 and under. I've run some of the named characters like Typhus and Abby, but that was just for fun.

For my Templars, I try to stay under 160 for my HQ choices, or at least around 140, like my EC. I've run Grimaldus as well, and he's a bit more expensive. Pity too... he lost all his wounds and rolled a 12 for his Ld test.

...on that note however, I almost won the game with my terminators running across the board killing everything in their path; just ran out of scoring units.

I think as a rule of thumb the most anyone should pay for a HQ is around 160. Once you start paying more than that, you get less and less rewards/benefits for your points (especially when a character is prone to instant death). Doesn't mean you can't be successful (or even with a deathstar list), it's just not optimal.

Example: 15 points for a plasma pistol on a Chaos Lord is better spent on an extra plasma rifle/special weapon on a CSM squad, an extra Chaos marine or a Havoc launcher for a CSM Rhino.

That seems a rather random number. I think you have to look at what each upgrade gives you. My Tyranid Prime is 105-120 Points where as a cheap Hive Tyrant is twice that! I agree with not buying expensive upgrades like Plasma but if you want optimal do not run a Chaos Lord take a lean-mean-killing-machine of a flying Demon Prince for 175 points.

I tend to spend on average about 200 points per HQ choice, and I tend to take 3 or 4 HQs, (space wolves) I also frequently win local tournaments at the most competitve gaming store in the region.

So this rule of thumb is really an arbitrary number.

True, but becasue there are exceptions the rule of thumb does not apply accross the board, and thus is no longer a rule of thumb, just an aritrary number.

Usually when I want a cheap HQ, i go with a Daemon Prince with wings, and when I want something more expensive, I use a Tzeench Sorceror with a Daemonic steed, warptime, gift of chaos, and a Raptor Squad. When I want something more moderate, I'll take a Slaanesh Lord w/Daemon weapon and stick him with my 'zerkers (as unfluffy as that is.)

Lets see, it really depends on my list

Armoured Company: 185 for an exterminator and 185 for a vanqisher, although it is just another tank, but bs4, I hardly count these as HQs.

Pre-Heresy Iron hands using the tempus fugitives' rules: 1095 in a 1750 game. Consists of Ferrus mannus, Gabriel Santar and 5 Primarch Honor Guard with a Legion Banner. (Hey, its the dropsite massacre and the "Age of Heros" after all!)

Biker Marines: Capitan on a bike w/relic blade (lance) and Storm shield, 180. Like sanjuncted said, the knight imagery is very nice, and it is basically a more resistant deamon prince with wings.

Regular IG: Oh **** I had to take an HQ!

SW: I have a total of five (or six, depending on perspective) characters I play reasonably often - two high-value builds, clocking in at 250+ each (Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf, Terminator-armoured Wolf Lord) and four mid-value builds, at 100-150 apiece (Rune Priest, Wolf Priest, stealth Battle Leader, Terminator-armoured Battle Leader - this is the same model as the one I use for the Wolf Lord)

My builds fluctuate a lot, but essentially I use:
0-1250: One mid-level. ~150 pts.
1000-1500: Two mid-level. ~250 pts.
1250-1750: One high-value. ~250 pts.
1500-2000: One high-value, one mid-value. ~400 pts.
1750+: One high-value, two mid-value. ~500 pts.
2000+: One high-value, three mid-value. ~650 pts.

In addition, I will normally have one or two character-level models elsewhere in the army - Arjac or a kitted Thunderwolf rider, both of which are more than capable of taking on most ICs.

On the other hand, in my Imperial Guard, I take either an 80 point command unit or, if I have the points spare, a 105 point unit. Never more than 105 total, even in 2000.
