My first army was DA and I can say I only regret 2 things.
1 getting a normal LR and not the crusader.
2. Bought a jump chaplain that I never use or plan to use.
Paint wise I have no regrets as I was somewhat artistic to begin with and I can spend up to 2 hours on one guy.

My first army was the Orks & Goblins in Fantasy. Later I collected some Chaos Dwarfs as allies for the Orks, a perfect fit at the time. Now I play the Orks in 40K. I have never played another, and haven't even considered playing another army (with the one exception of my half-conceived WU TANG CLAN Space Marine chapter). People who know me well can't believe that I love these green skinned bastards so much, being so antithetical to my personality. But I do. There is no accounting for love.

My first army was Lizardmen. They were painted terrible *shudder* After that I moved onto tau, and then onto Tyranids. And now I'm doing a salamander space marine army and I'm going to stick with them because I have gotten pretty good at painting.

My first army was Eldar. I was 20 at the time. Even my worst job was better than most noobs today as I'd already been assembling and painting models for the previous 8 or so years. Now I just can't be bothered taking as much time on them.
I still use them with that paint scheme.
Liche purple and (dark) blue (custom tint).

My first marines were just primed white until about 5 years ago. They were started 15 years prior to this.

Never liked the red ones, the black ones, the green ones - or the other green ones, the blue ones or the grey ones.

I decided to pain them up as my other hobby. So my mates are immortalised as little plastic wardollies.

My first army was Daemonhunters and it was expensive, both points and money wise, because I ran them as Grey Knights. Now how ever I'd like to redo the old bird into more of an Inquisitorial Force, with one or two GK squads.

My second Army a 4th ED Space Marine Army I loved because I could build the army the way I wanted one to be fluff wise with the traits system. Once 5th started I went to Chaos (Night Lords some may get the old Grey and Red scheme), and am working on a small Sons of Orar force.

My first "Army", so to speak, was the AOBR starter kit. Looking back, I feel really good about it, to be honest - first off, when I pre-ordered it, it was $60. It apparently jumped to $75 upon release. Second off, I feel like I got an enormous value for my $60 in terms of units, and that mini rulebook i consult more then my $50 main rulebook.

More specifically about my armies - I did just like the box, Ultramarines & Goffs. I did the SM first, and I haven't re-done any of them. I didn't do a great job on them, but I neither did a terrible job either. They're a little shinier since I was using cheap clear spreay paint from lowe's rather then Dullcote, and my sergeant appears to be looking in two different directions... but I don't think I did a terrible job, and I'm proud of some of them. I did my Boyz second and those I actually think came out pretty good... mostly because I vacillated on painting them for over a year, and by the time I finally upgraded them from "black editions", I had actually gotten a lot better at painting.

My only regret, I guess, was in doing them as Ultramarines. After spending a lot of time on Dakka I feel like the UM are bland and flavorless and really, really cliche. Even in the codex fluff it's they come across as boring, almost like space paladins (as a former troll shadowknight, I still hate nothing worse then a paladin). I'm hoping to play them ironically, like a trucker hat. If I could do it over again, I'd do a chapter with an interesting backstory, like the Dark Angels or the Blood Ravens (which are coincidentally also a little cliche, but I don't care, I love their backstory)

My first army still isn't complete but I am aiming to get it to 10000 points because apoc is why I collect 40k minis.
It got me to learn all that I know ATM about painting miniatures and when that army is complete I will give it allies and when that is done I will repaint it with all the techniques I have learned.

Started out with 'nids cause it was one of the few that my friends didnt own. I HATED it. Lost every match because I couldnt afford enough figures to make them playable for me. Then I got into IG and just like McDonalds, I'm lovin it. They are so much fun, mainly because they remind me of the current military (minus the awesome equipment IG have of course)

First of all - I was 11.
Black templar. Couldn't paint. didn't ever have the codex.
Black basecoat spraypaint (wasn't even GW spray, just $2 hardware store black) with red eyes, white shoudlerpads and silver guns, in that order. no other painting effort went into them.

I still love my first armies. Yes, it's pluralized and yes, rightly so. I started with AoBR and slowly expanded both Orks and SM simultaneously, which is an ongoing process. They are my only armies and will be for a good, long time. I have neither the time nor funds to start anything else, nor would I want to. Not until I have more than a handful of figures painted (9 orks, with 6 more half-completed and one marine to test my scheme). I don't even have basic lists drawn up, as I get so few chances to play. They are the well-loved but oft-neglected children of a father far too busy at work (and/or school).

Most of them were Ultramarines Blue drybrushed over black, with splatterings of Scab Red and Chainmail here and there. You can bet I was proud of them at the time though! Once I was 15 I started playing 40k "proppa" and started up a Dark Angels army.

Fast forward a few years, I'm 19 and the new Blood Angels codex is out. I figured I may as well try my hand at a Flesh Tearers army, since they look pretty badass. I dug up a bunch of my old Ultras and they should be tearing flesh before you know it...

Good luck with that

I find myself flirting with the Dark Angels... but I have no idea how they play and I can't get my hands on a .pdf, pretty badass fluff though, might even persuade me to recolour the Blood Ravens and use them as a codex army!

Pluss green stuff'ing robes sounds fun.

Play them with the SM codex, DA codex is way to overpriced. But you can use the veterans kits for sergeant's. It add's an awesome look to your Tac squads.

When I first started (many, many years ago) I did what most kids did. I collected a bit of everything because I thought it was all cool.

My first REAL army was probably chaos. I amassed a dread, 30 bezerkers, 20 plague marines, Abaddon and Kharn. I even got most of them painted (although it was so long ago I can't actually remember how well they were done)....Then I exchanged them all for a BMX.

When I got into the game, I was stuck between IG and Orks, so I picked Chaos lol. I used to LOVE Chaos, but their current codex just pissed me off so badly I stopped playing them. They basically took all the pizzazz from them.

So now I play Orks, and havnt regretted the change once

My first army was chaos. I was loving the World Eaters, my dad (I was like 14-15 at the time I think) picked me up a Kharn on ebay for litterally pennies, and I treated him like he was my child. Still have him somewhere, 3 (technically 4) armies later.

Well considering I only started no more than 3 months ago I am still on my first army, Orks I have started looking at Space Wolves though.

Do I like them? Yes.
Are they just what I wanted? Nearly. My painting is not great and I didn't understand all the weapon configuration when I started. Plus I can't afford all the fancy multi-part sets so are mainly using several sets of Black Reach boyz.

This is the first 40K mini I painted and first ever attempt at dry-brushing. It won't win a competition but to be fair I don't think it's that bad for a first effort. - a tad heavy on the paint in places. Some of the later minis are painted a bit better, I love how Old Zogswort and my Killa Kans came out. But I'm sure I'll get better the more I practice and the more techniques I learn. The biggest lesson I've learnt is patience - I'm not a very patient artist usually. I've got a second Black Reach Ork Warbass which I'm keeping until I think my painting has improved sufficiently.

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

Well started out with AoBR but at the time didnt particularly like either army. So i decided to go with CSMs instead. Was given a TON of stuff from my buddy that got me started in the hobby to begin with. Then whittled away the stuff i didnt care for and ended up with Thousand Sons. Only regret was not coming up with a relatively good list and sticking with it because it would have saved me alot of money.

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, its just a freight train coming your way!

The first 40k model I bought was a hammerhead, not even knowing their was a game involved. Second thing I bought was a codex, in which there is the awesome picture of farsight fighting the two orks. Third thing I bought was Commander Farsight.

Bout a year and a half later i'm running out of things to get for the army... you can only field so many crisis suits and fire warriors, and i'm not much of an imperialist (all of my marine armies have failed horribly), and the only other army that interests me is necrons, which i might start soon despite knowing their drawbacks.

My first army was started twenty years ago and it's just awful compared to what I'm doing now.

That said, stuff I did a couple of years ago is awful compared to what I'm doing now.

ETA, taking a bit of time out from playing to paint has done wonders. For the first time I've been painting stuff with no time limit rather than slapping some paint on to get it on the table ASAP.

I then read the new BA Codex and have since been practicing my golf swing on very, very badly painted reddy/black badly posed and now badly fluffed Space Marines.

On the train headin down to delicious town

Im damn proud of my first army! (Necrons) they havent seen too much play in the past few months though...

I always wanted to play orks after falling in love w them in dawn of war but I wasnt sure if i would like the hobby part of this hobby so i started as a race that didnt need alot of units to get into a 1500 pt game...I was also looking for something simple to paint (though my fashion police scheme is FAR from being simple to paint i think)...I didnt really start playing until i left japan and by then id bought a ton of units that i thought would be effective...i wanted to be able to field at least 1 full size squad of everything in my codex...did online research and skipped the pariahs and picked up 2 squads of wraiths instead...and been using them ever since...

So I guess to moral of this rambling post is I love my first army! and as soon as my new dex comes out you can bet they will be on the table once again persuing fashion criminals the galaxy over!
