I found out that the dragons are great for meq hunting yet they fall short. Because sure they might unload say 9 wounds at best (give or take rolls) and then thats 9 dead guys say the squad is at like 12 thats 3 guys left and if they pass their ld check chances are they are going to charge my dragons and frankly they either die or get stuck in melee for too long.
I was tempted to take some guardian jet bikes with a bike council for my troop choice giving me some more mobility and what not. I tried the whole put stuff on wave serpents (technically cheating because it was over 2k points :(. ) but they really didn't seem to do much, the missile launchers and lances failed to kill anything and it was upsetting. I was also tempted to drop the squads down to 7ish take full das with bladestorm so my da do something other then trying to take points or getting banshees or harlequins to tar up or save my dragons in melee yet they have the obvious draw back of no assault ramp or walking. Just to clarify some things with the FD squads, were you getting Guide on the unit? How many models was the Flamer hitting?

Guiding every time and flame thrower hitting 4-10 guys a go. Combine flamer getting armor save and cover saves on the melta via going to ground if need be (I know they cant assault me) I found they just couldnt kill enough or because I had to be so close to make use of the melta guns that if I killed one squad (never happened always left like 2 guys left) it left them wide open for either getting shot to hell or getting charged which hurts even more.

Huh good to know, sounds like positioning may have been a bit off with serpents and a tad of bad dice luck. Statistically against a 10 man Marines squad if you hit 10 with a TL heavy flamer and 9 TL meltas there shouldn't be anything left, but dust. If they go to ground they just die the following round since they can't do anything.
If there was things within firing range that you couldn't position your Serpent to grant a cover save it may have been a bit early of a strike. Dragons squish easily, if there is a chance your going to get assaulted or shot at by a diff squad then don't go for it or go with a simultaneous strike with two of those units. Even bolter fire against Dragons with Fortune should have made a fail cake with a 75% chance to save.

Well do I come up with the serpent and swing around and show the backside or position it so they have to assault the serpent to get the the dragons?

Well, you can't swing around a Serpent after the unit disembarked.
Never expose the backside to the enemy.
Correct maneuvering around is key.
