I use the GW melta packs and just leave the hand on the melta gun bit.

I use the IG Grenade Launcher arm, clip off the hand of the arm and the "butt" off the Melta. Then I pin the GW bit right to the arm.

2 easy cuts and one pin job later, and I have a Melta Vet....5 min conversion, tops.

exactly. And if anybody notices the hand is slightly larger tell them he's Michael Jackson wearing a single glove. HEEE HEEE!

seriously, it's not that obvious.

Do you NEED melta? In a competitive list sure probably. You don't need tons of it though. I run my mech list with 2 melta CCSs and thats it. Everything else (vet squads) have plasma. I also have 3 Vendettas and 2 Manticores to help deal with armor. Also the Vendettas chew light armor/transports to pieces. the Manticores are solid for dealing with high AV vehicles from range as well. The meltas are something of a shield and I have them on units that are generally not super relevant (ie not scoring) so in almost any mission I'm ok with making a 1 for 1 trade if it will really hurt my opponent.
