I don't consider the Guard to be the underdogs. If the Guard lost more than it won, the Imperium would cease to exist.

But they don't. The Guard ARE the Imperium's army. They win, and they do so constantly and consistently. The Guard is victorious, and when the sound of a million boots marching echoes through the world, the Imperium's enemies will shudder in fear. And then the tanks and artillery arrives and they soil themselves.


The Guard isn't the underdog. The individual guardsmen are the underdogs. It's an army made up of regular people, all of whom are outclassed by every other army out there. Truthfully, Guardsmen are the most courageous individuals in 40k.
