Basically a super-Zoanthrope.
The thing that you hear about is how he has an attack that rips the souls out of nearby infantry and gives him more wounds.

"Special not-a-Zoanthrope" from the new Nid codex.
He (in my opinion) should be a Zoan, but lacks that particular term in his rules. Allegedly a hyper-evolved Zoan.. and has a special power that does wounds on all models within range, and IF models die, he gains wounds.
Played well, really sick. Rules discussion on whether or not he affects embarked models in transports causes MOST of the issues with him.
He lacks Eternal Warrior, so S8 + weaponry can insta-gib him.

He is a great distraction - and while the DE may laugh at killing the unit in its miss, thats one turn it has limited its choices on movement - a plus for tyranids.
Somehow i see a repeat of bang head against wall, like people and pyrovores or heavy venom cannons...
He is undercosted but not by a huge amount. 100-120pts sounds about right. Anything more than that and he just can't compete with deathleaper, hive guard or regular zoes. Between his soul suck and his large blast he should easily be able to kill the value of himself and his spod before he goes poof.

DoM is extremely unreliable, but I think some of the people here are on the right track.
1. Takes up an elite slot that could be filled with something nastier.
2. He draws fire from MC's since he is a threat that has to be dealt with.
I have had great games with him, I have had bad games with him. Either way, for me, he ensures my trygons and tyrant have fewer heavy weapons brought to bear on them for a turn or 2.

What I'm referring to is the potential for it to absolutely feth over your forces but it also can do nothing. The fact that it is undercosted represents its potential to do a lot. It can completely do nothing and leave me with a free killpoint, or it can destroy stuff. Either way its just meh.

I think it's better than just meh, but then a lot of it's potential has to do with the type of list that you are running. Locking down units in cc so that they are auto hit by DoM is a big plus. Equally giving your opponent multiple threats appearing in their lines also helps (2/3 trygons, a flyrant and the DoM works really well).
In a footslogging list he really has no place, but when deepstriking multiple large threats he can cause a big headache.

Change and change until Change is our master, for nothing neither God nor mortal can hold that which has no form. Change is the constant that cannot be changed.

Sounds more like the guard player was a raw nooblet, both for his army composition (those aren't bad units, but they shouldn't be the extent of your scoring units), and for putting all his poorly chosen eggs in one basket for the Doom to sweep up.

By himself the Doom is good.
Mix him with a few broodlords and I can see him becoming insane.
