Null Zone doesn't do much against orks unless they have Ghazkull. the best Invuln orks can get is a 5+ and thats pretty easy to get through.
Avenger is good against orks. Smite is not. you have to roll to hit with Smite, but avenger auto-hits as its a template, it has more potential hits, and will wound more often.

No way you'd take an HQ as expensive as Ghazkull in a 500 points game.
In fact i'm wondering if librarian is needed in a 500 pointer.

Space Marines do not scale down well, they are much harder to play at 500 points then they are at 1500 or 2000.
If I'm going up against orks at 500 points here is what I play.
Librarian: 100pts
Pick two powers, I like gate and whatever the 12" S10 AP 1 large blast one is.
Tactical Squad: 170pts
5 Extra Marines
Flamer
Missle Launcher
Tactical Squad: 122pts
2 Extra Marines
Thunderfire Cannon: 100pts
Comes out to 492 points. The Thunderfire Cannon absolutly decimates Orks at low point levels. The techmarine that comes with the cannon will also give you a 3+ cover save.
I'm finding lately that I prefer Blood Angels at 500 points. Assult squads with preists are wicked.

What is the use of Gate of Infinity with a Librarian and a tactical squad?

It lets you fall back farther... I've found it useful at low point costs when enemys ten to be fairly slow

yeah ok......
the other way is to make a "falling back gunline".
Advance everything as far as possible, then spend subsequent turns walking backwards (out of assault range, like 10 inches from enemy) rapid firing all the way

Librarians are actually quite good at lower pt games.
they have psychic powers that can kill many enemies and they have a Force weapon in case you do run into a MC.
Don't use Vortex of Doom at that low pt level. if he miscasts then it is likely bye bye libby as you don't have an invuln on him.
better powers would be Avenger and Force Dome.
Chaplains are more survivable as they have a 4+ invuln and a power weapon.
