If I relcall correctly they were going to make a supplemental book orginally. But then someone realised that the frist printing and the second printing rule book look exaclt the same, you have to look at the printing date on the inside cover to tell them apart. So they decided to make it easy on everyone and make a new book with all the updates and the new figs, I really hope they come out with a hardcover book this time.
Semi-agreed on the hardcover.
I'd like to have a hard cover, but I don't want to pay through the nose for it.
I'd like to have an option, if a HC would be pricey.

There were multiple posts on the Malifaux Boards asking for an errataed new edition.
Nathan C and Eric (the creators) posted that there were no plans for that to happen.
It's a bit silly to be publishing a 2nd edition when the original isn't a year old yet.
My hope is that they do what Warmachine did. Bundle the errata in the back of the expansion book.

It is my line of thought that a Hardcover would finally do the Malifaux rulebook justice.
Not only is it a fun, dynamic game, it holds some fantastic stories and artwork.

I kid Since i avoid bushlands that is But we're not that bad... are we?
After also signing a NDS, I believe the 2nd Book is going to INCLUDE parts of the first book, with Errata included and expanded masters and minions. However, will not cancel out the existing rules.
A) I have play-tested it and... WOW!
B) Why release a 2nd Ed within 1 year of the first... if it still turns out they changed their minds and released a 2nd Ed, I would still play 1st Ed, as its what I know and feels a bit rushed to learn everything again, differently.
C) I mainly buy to collect and paint the minis... the gaming aspect is a fun thing on the side.

Avatar, you put what I was trying to convey into words better then I did. My FLGS was supposed to be in on the Beta test, adn was apporved to get the stuff but we still havent gotten anything. I do agree with you on the painting and collecting side, they are some great minis and i had alot of fun painting and modeling my Som'er Teeth box, Im work on the Rasputina box next.
I actually bought Som'er first... but decided against him cos I cant figure his playstyle out.
However, I just finished a Rasputina crew + extras and used the Dark Age clear resin ice bases... paint beneath them with Ice blue (or equiv) then lightly dust them with white (drybrush)... aply scatterings of snow-flock if you wish... Perfect for your Golems, Gamin and Wednigo!

I do not find there to be any more luck or balance, I just enjoy not having to chase dice around the room when my over-eager opponents throw them hard...

I actually gave a demo to a guy who didn't like it. He complained that he liked games with (and I $#!+ you not) "more strategy and player interaction." Turns out he was just a moron. His idea of "strategy" is running Butcher of Khardov and 6 Warjacks forward shouting "Hulk Smash." Which, while fun as hell, has nothing to do with strategy or interaction.
Top 3 reasons to play Malifaux (can't speak for Infinity) in no particular order:
(these have nothing to do with the storyline, which is why I play it)
1. Cheating fate
Ignore everybody who says cards = no luck; that's just ignorant. The part everyone is overlooking is the fact that you can hold onto good cards. You use these good cards later to "Cheat Fate" and replace the crap you just flipped. Let's say you're playing 40K. Your Termie rolls a 6 to save. Wouldn't you rather use that 6 on armor penetration? This is what Malifaux does. What the cards let you do, in 40K terms, is change a 1 to a 5 or 6.
2. Strategy
Malifaux lets you build your army AFTER knowing the scenario. With several very different win combinations, not to mention optional secret ways to get more VP's, it's one of the most strategic minis games I've played. You can also fill gaps in your list by hiring Mercenaries, many of whom have a very specific skill set.
3. Player Interaction
Both players flip cards when attacking AND defending. The only real static target numbers deal with terrain (some of which is interactive and destroyable) and casting your own spells. I attack by flipping a card and adding my stat. You defend by flipping a card and adding your stat. Then (and here's where the interaction comes in), starting with the loser, we can cheat by replacing the flip with a card from our hand. Glad you saved that red Joker? You will be when you Cheat it for double damage!
In conclusion, go play the game. It's frickin sweet.
As for a hardcover book, I cut the spine out, took mine to Staples, and had it bound for like $6. Did this to my 40K codices too. Much better than HC because they lay flat and the spiral binding doesn't cut out any text like 3-hole punching would. Did I mention they throw in durable plastic covers?
Oh, and ignore any reports about a 2nd edition of the base book. The Gencon book will be all new and amazing. They're doing stuff with this game that I never would've imagined in a minis game.
Forgot I posted this thread. I'd like to thank everyone for some very insightful posts. I've decided on Malifaux and plan to buy up an entire faction before the price increase. (I will however get into Infinity at some point.)
Haven't been able to decide between Arcanists, Guild and Ressurectionists. I like them all a lot, and after quite a few proxy games they all feel fun to play, but I'm leaning away from Guild.
Catyrpelius wrote:If I relcall correctly they were going to make a supplemental book orginally. But then someone realised that the frist printing and the second printing rule book look exaclt the same...
I can confirm that the new book due out at Gencon is a supplement, an expansion to first book. It will not replace the first book but provide rules for new models and some new, expanded rules. The first book remains the primary source for the game's rules.
Redstripe Envy: My thoughts as a freelance writer and wargamer.
What are your preferences?
All have power behind them with the right builds.
Do you like shooting? HtH? Spell Casting a lot/easily?
I would suggest joining and perusing the Wyrd forums before jumping in and buying a set you might dislike later.
Personally, I like all 3 of your choices above. I have multiple crews for each (except for Guild... which I need to get a Perdita crew for).

I say get both. Malifaux is pretty cheap. I got the Lillith starter for 30$ a little while ago and all I really need to play for awhile (until more interests gets drummed up at my FLGS) is a couple of Young Nephilim for like 15$. The Pan-Ocean starter I was thinking of picking up this coming week for 45$. I hear the Infinity starters are basically like a 1000 point 40K army in a little box.
I love the look and feel of the infinity world and models. I haven't played it and I'm not familiar with the rules. I love the flow and gameplay of Malifaux, I've played a lot of the different gangs in Malifaux, but Lillith and her Nephilim are by far my favorite. Her little 'trick' of being the fastest most brutal beat down around is just awesome, I've never played that type of army in any other game before.
If you've got 100$, get both, it's easy. And cheaper than a couple ten man units of 40k dudes.
Once upon a time, I told myself it's better to be smart than lucky. Every day, the world proves me wrong a little more.
What are your thoughts on Combined Army? I love the figures...
Also, I PMd pics of my Rasputina crew to Caterpelius...

Both games have beautiful models and are affordable.
Gameplay wise, Malifaux is a slam dunk. It incorporates all the tactical depth of a skirmish game while not saddling it with the RPG fanboi-esque special rules and matrices that pollute the genre.
I mean, Infinity isn't bad, but it has four different methods for Aerial Deployment (Read: Deep Strike) for crying out loud. Four.
I am loving Malifaux. THe models are awesome, and the game mechanics are interesting.
Infinity drew my interest, but I only like individual models, scattered mong the factions. No idea how the rules work, though.

No matter which box set you decied to purchase go through the codex first and get a feal for the boxes point wise. The reason I say this is that there is a huge disparity between the number of points contained in a box. On the low end you have the Som'er box which comes in at 16 points and on the high end you have the Perdita box which is over 20 points, its avtually 23 points if I remember correctly.
Seriously though, pick whichever faction you enjoy the most, just bear in mind that some factions are much harder to play then others.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Avatar, nice job on the mini's by the way. Maybe tonight I'll have enough time to take some pictures of my Som'er crew and the beginings of my Rasputenia crew.

Even better, if you can find an opponent who already has some stuff that can get you a feel for what you *think* you'll like, then all the better.

You'll get something different out of both games. Malifaux tends to play quicker once learned and has a very easy learning curve. That being said, the game still has a lot of nuances, many of which you don't find in other games (like control hand management).
Infinity on the other hand offers a very in-depth look at skirmish games. To me this game is like Necromunda combined with Shadowrun on crack. I just wish the Corvus Belli folks would find better translators... like hamsters.
Both games orient themselves very easily towards narrative campaigns and both are extremely enjoyable once a person gets past the initial learning curve (which with infinity can take some time).

I'm surprised this hasn't been posted here before now... It's been out for a while. Truly excellent, and with CBs blessing and all the rules from human sphere included.
Oh yeah; that's one for Infinity. All the rulebooks and army lists are 100% free.

Yup.
WAU, Warseer, Heresy, TO (Tau Online), EldarO, 40kO and a bunch of others - oh, and of course, the official Infinity forums.
One username to rule them all.
I'm testing out some Yu-jing unit rules (Aragoto Senkenbutai) using some proxy bikers I have (two teams of two - they're a bosozoku gang).
They look like they could be quite nasty.
Usually
I just stick to my PanO though.
I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
That is not dead which can eternal lie ...
... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.
I guess these videos form the CorvusBelli official Youtube chanel can spread some light over the "How does Infinity works" question.
I dont believe in comparing games, or movies, or paintings... Just choose the one that you feel it is what you want to play right now.
Today I had the urge of shooting people with an Heavy Machine Gun while shouting: -"Diiieeeee!!!!" and now I feel far more relaxed.
