Well penitent engines get 6+D6+D6 if they want, so up to 18" which is pretty good for a walker!

That is if getting up close to the enemy with a squadron of AV11, Open Topped Walkers (with WS4 and I3 that has potentially one attack) is a good thing... which I maintain in many cases will not be anything but quick death.

Stumbled upon this little tidbit from the rules whilst reading elsewhere:

Pg 11: DIFFERENT MOVEMENT DISTANCES IN A UNIT
All of the models in a unit move at the speed of the slowest model.

Sure seems to suggest that models and units are somehow tied together.
