Is this squad like a sword brethren squad from the Templars? I dont have any yet, but am working on getting some, just curious, sounds kind of similar to what i read in my codex

W/D/L/ A(a= Annihilated beyond doubt)

Orks =44/2/9/2 15k+ pts (assembled/broken)
Black Templar= 4/1/2/1 3k 2k pts (assembled)

Sort of, Ron, in the way that Neophytes with bolt pistols and CCW's are like Scouts with sniper rifles in other armies. Sword Brethren are a zealous Elites choice that are used to charge into the enemy and kill stuff in close-combat. Devastators are Heavy Support choices that are basically Tactical Squads that carry lots of heavy weapons, and DON'T run screaming out of cover towards the enemy when one of their brethren falls. Black Templars don't get Devastators, probably because of the chapter's legendary zeal.

Last Night I used a Full 10 man Dev Squad with 4 Missile Launchers(mostly to eat up points and avoid vehicle use, wanted the army all infantry). I got 1 Shot off the whole game, 1st turn exploded a Baal Predator with Flamestorm cannon. This was all I needed and wanted them to do. Then they got into Melee with my opponents all jump pack Blood angels(Dante, 2 5 man Sanguinary guard, 2 Assault squads I don't remember how many men in each, 1 jump chaplain, 1 jump sanguinary priest, and 7 Jump-pack death company including Lemartes)

I took several Items that are considered sub par including the Full Devs, and a Chapter Master with Power sword, digital weapons, Auxiliary grenade launcher, and Artificer armor.

I managed a hit using my CM's Orbital bombardment against the Death Company hitting 6 models(wounding 4), Plasma Cannon from that squad overheated and died, Plasma gun hit twice and killed 2 models most of the bolters missed or failed to wound. I actually had to shoot up Leamartes with my 10 man, 3 Plasma pistol, assault squad to kill him. In retrospect I should have used that unit and their Plasma death to shoot at Dante's Sanguinary guard.

Anyway the Point is that a 10 man Dev squad is not without Merit Leave the Sgt naked with a bolter, or give him a storm bolter, take 4 Missile launchers for the relative in-expense, and the 5 extra marines as "ablative Armor". That way when you take a wound you do not lose a 15 point gun with your marine or the extra 10 point Sgt(20 if you gave him a SB or Combi weapon). 80 Points for 5 Marines that then allow you to split your fire ala Long Fangs is not a bad price especially since they increase the survivability of your squad a full 100%

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

one tactic i don't think i've ever seen, but i personally think is good for keeping your semi-squishy marines from getting shot up by all the nasty Str5 ap5 weapons out there (not that i have any experience in this area ) is as follows
give your squad four weapons, up them to a ten man squad, break them into a combat squad with Sgt and four weapons in one (that way he can buff their BS with his Signum thingy) and the five regular MEQs in the other
then use the MEQ combat squad as an intercept, both for a cover save and as an anti assault unit. This gives your dev's another line of protection, especially from all the scary Hi str weapons out there, and lets you fire with another level of confidence and survivability
also personally, i've found that you should go all the way or go home, meaning if you run devs, run them big, with four of the same weapon for redundancy, as it really makes those lascannon, krak missile, and HB shots hurt like a
just my personal BA experience

Even the best opponents can make mistakes.

Of course they can.

However, relying on that to make a bad tactical choice a good one is total fail sauce.

Sorry I ment by hold Objectives was put them on one on your side of the table and hold them like you would tell a squad, "Go Hold the Position"

Or instead of spending 80pts on 5 bolter marines that can't score (and ld8), you could spend 10pts more for 5 bolter marines that can score and have a ld9 sgt

But I already am normaly fielding 3 full Tactical Squads. To add that extra 5 man would mean that I could not have the option of Combat Squading or use them on Operation: Meat Shield.

Umm...what?

You could combat squad every single tac squad you have even if you took 6 full 10 man squads...

A 5 man combat squaded bolter dev squad can't hold anything. They can contest, but can't hold anything...
