I think for most armies you have to be quite a good player to do well with only two troop choices. For my Khornate daemon army my only troops are two squads of 15 Bloodletters each and I always seem to do well with them. Basically you need to have a very well designed list.

I believe it really depends on the army. If you play Marines, you can get away with two tac squads in rhinos. If you play nids, though, you're gonna need troops. Keep in mind, if you are able to hold one or two objectives and contest the rest of them, you win. That's how tau usually win, camp one objective, maybe take a second, and contest all the other objectives with battlesuits.

Alas, poor Yorick.

Inside a pretty, pretty pain cave... won't you come inside?

I run only 2 scoring units in some lists and don't think it's that big an issue EXCEPT when you have fragile choices and you need the massacre by gaining 4+ objectives and they are spread apart. If I run small numbers of troops (scoring, not counting stuff like dreads in a kan wall list), obviously I'm placing objectives as close as possible. Even a 5-man unit can claim two objectives if 12" apart.

Now, it's not for all or even most lists, but they can work just fine. Many troop heavy lists will have a couple of their slots annihilated by end game, and simply managing your small troops well (starting in reserves, keeping them constantly in cover or hidden from LOS, etc.), you can still be in a good position to win. Getting the massacre in a seize ground mission will be hard, but everything else is very much possible because by not buying troops, you're probably building up harder units to wipe out your opponent. The vast majority of troops are not hard-hitting units, so it's not a huge trade-off.

Generally, when i play my marines i only use maybe 2 troop choices. Although when i play my bugs(nids) I use all 6...depending on points played. I just started playing tau, so I'm not sure how im going to use them full term yet...it depends on how you play, how your opponent plays, and the scenario your playing.

IG is the only army I can think of that can make do with two troop slots.... but if you are talking units... those had better be huge units that can do a mean conga line.

i make due with marines with two squads of troops ALL the time. I was on a 5 game winning streak agents above average players. It depends on how else you field and the scenario.

Yeah, I would say that eldar, IG, necrons, blood angels, and chaos marines are the only codices that can easily take two troop and come out on top.

Marines are meh in my opinion, I actually use my troop choices with them!

Well, it depends on the army.
In 2008, the German GT winner played Orks with 2x 30 Orks as troops.
Mech Eldar with two units of DA in Serpents can be successful, too,
the same holds for Space Marines with 2 full Tacticals that can eventually be combat squadded.
